The .7 is the same architecture as the LRS+ but scaled up. The larger the panel, the more air it can move with less excursion. Larger is better because the driver has more headroom and can play louder before distorting.

There is no .7i. There is only MG .7 and MG .7X.

If you want more low-end weight below the panel's roll-off, a fast, musical subwoofer extends the bottom end without dragging on the panel's speed. We most often pair Magnepan with REL and Perlisten subwoofers, since both keep up with a planar's quickness rather than fighting it.

What amplifier do I need for the Magnepan .7x?

The .7x has a 4-ohm impedance and 86dB sensitivity, so it needs a capable amplifier. Look for at least 100 watts per channel into 4 ohms with good current delivery. What is the difference between the .7 and the .7x?

The .7x is the X-Series version of the standard .7, built exclusively for The Listening Room. It uses the same driver design but with upgraded crossover components: copper-rich polypropylene capacitors matched to 0.005% tolerance, bobbin-wound copper coils tested to the thousandths, 15-gauge solid copper wiring, and all silver-soldered connections. The result is tighter imaging, lower distortion, and more precise left/right channel balance.

Do I need a subwoofer with the Magnepan .7x?

It depends on your music and expectations. The .7x reaches down to 45Hz, which handles most acoustic and vocal music well. For rock, electronic, or home theater with deep bass demands, adding a fast, musical subwoofer fills out the bottom end while maintaining the speed and coherence of planar bass. We most often pair Magnepan with REL and Perlisten subwoofers, since both blend cleanly with a planar. Magnepan recommends setting the crossover between 45-90Hz.

How much room do I need for the Magnepan .7x?

The .7x needs at least 2 feet from the rear wall, with 3 feet or more recommended for optimal soundstage depth. Side walls should be at least 2 feet away. A room of 12x15 feet or larger works well. Because the .7x is a dipole speaker, the rear wall reflection is part of the sound, so placement distance from that wall directly affects bass response and imaging.

How long does the Magnepan .7x need to break in?

Magnepan speakers typically need 50-100 hours of play to fully break in, with some listeners reporting continued improvements up to 200 hours. During break-in, expect the bass to fill out and the upper midrange to smooth out. The speakers are listenable from day one, but they sound noticeably more open and dynamic after the diaphragms have loosened up.

Can I use a tube amplifier with the Magnepan .7x?
