The Magnepan 2.7x is a three-way planar magnetic floorstanding speaker that sits right in the sweet spot of the X-Series lineup. It's big enough to fill a room with real, full-range sound, but sized so it won't take over your living space the way a 20.7 or 30.7 will.
Built on the bones of the 2.7i, the 2.7x gets the full X-Series treatment: overhauled crossovers, upgraded capacitors, tighter-tolerance coils, and silver-soldered connections throughout. The driver technology is unchanged (aluminum foil quasi-ribbon bass and midrange, 40-inch True Ribbon tweeter), but every component in the signal path has been rethought and rebuilt. The result is a speaker that sounds more coherent, more controlled, and more revealing than the already-excellent 2.7i.

Inside the Magnepan 2.7x: The X-Series Difference
The "X" in X-Series isn't marketing. It's a ground-up rebuild of everything between the binding posts and the drivers. Magnepan's engineers went through the 2.7i's crossover network component by component, replacing each one with something better, then matching left and right channels to tolerances most speaker companies don't even attempt. Here's what changed.
Capacitors Built for Precision
Every capacitor in the 2.7x crossover is copper-rich polypropylene, individually measured and matched. Magnepan doesn't pull from a bin and call it close enough. Each capacitor bank is assembled, tested, broken down if the numbers aren't right, and rebuilt until the left and right channels measure within a fraction of a percent of each other. That kind of matching shows up as tighter imaging, smoother frequency response, and better channel-to-channel consistency.

Coils and Wiring, Done Right
The crossover coils are air-core, bobbin-wound copper, built in-house at Magnepan and tested for inductance, resistance, and Q factor to tight tolerances. Once soldered to the board, they're tested again. All internal wiring is 15-gauge solid copper with shortened signal paths and fewer connection points. Every joint (except the binding post screw) is silver-soldered. Less wire, less resistance, cleaner signal.

Materials Policy: Copper, Silver, Gold. Nothing Else.
Magnepan limits the metals inside the 2.7x to three: copper, silver, and gold. No nickel, no tin, no cheap alloys. From the crossover traces to the internal wiring to the binding post contacts, every conductive path uses materials chosen for conductivity and long-term stability. The crossover board layout itself has been redesigned to eliminate unnecessary connections and reduce the total wire length between components.

The Magnepan 2.7x EXperience
The 2.7x is a three-way, full-range planar with aluminum quasi-ribbon panels handling bass and midrange and a 40-inch True Ribbon tweeter on top. That True Ribbon is a strip of aluminum foil suspended freely in a magnetic field, with no substrate to add mass or coloration. High frequencies come through fast, clean, and extended to 40kHz.
What you hear is a wide, open soundstage with instruments placed precisely across the stereo image. Vocals sit right in front of you with natural body and presence. Bass reaches down to 40Hz with the kind of speed and texture that box speakers struggle to match at this price point. The dipole radiation pattern (sound projected equally forward and backward) fills the room with a sense of space that pulls you into the recording rather than pushing sound at you.
Compared to the 2.7i, the X-Series upgrades tighten everything up. Better crossover matching means the left and right channels track more closely, which sharpens imaging. Lower-loss components mean more of the amplifier's signal reaches the drivers intact. The differences aren't dramatic on first listen, but they accumulate. You notice them on familiar recordings where you start hearing details and spatial cues that weren't as clear before.
Versatility and Compatibility
The 2.7x fits into a range of setups without fuss. Pair them with Magnepan DWM bass panels for deeper low-end extension, use them as front channels in a multichannel system, or run them as surround speakers behind larger Magnepans. The dipole design gives you flexibility with room placement, and at 71 by 22 inches, they're large enough to deliver full-range sound but manageable enough for rooms where the 3.7x or 20.7x would be too much speaker.
The 2.7x also works well for near-field listening in smaller rooms. You don't need a dedicated listening space the size of a concert hall to get what these speakers can do.
Tailor Your Look: Trim Options
The Magnepan 2.7x offers a variety of trim options to complement your existing decor. Choose from a classic black, off-white or classic white grille cloth, or a more contemporary neutral grey. Contact The Listening Room to discuss your preferred trim option and find the right look for your space.
