At this level, every detail matters: your room, your system, what you’re driving it with, what you’re listening to. I handle these orders personally because an investment like this deserves more than an Add to Cart button. We’ll work through system synergy, I’ll make sure the setup is right, and we’ll coordinate delivery so it arrives exactly how it should. A few of our brands require this direct approach, but at this price point, it’s how I’d do it anyway. Use the button above, or call/text me directly at 410-239-2020.

Mike's Take

The 20.7 introduces a push-pull magnet structure. All the smaller Magnepans have a magnet structure on only one side of the Mylar. The 20.7 has magnets on the front and on the back. This doubles the magnetic field strength and gives you significantly more bass punch and overall dynamic ability.

Design and Build

The Magnepan 20.7x builds on the iconic design of the original 20.7, maintaining its sleek, boxless aesthetic while integrating the X-Series upgrades throughout. High-quality copper-rich capacitors, air-core inductors, and silver soldered connections reduce signal loss and distortion, ensuring a cleaner, more precise sound.

Optimized wiring paths and reduced mass in the circuit design further enhance signal purity, while gilded components and tight-tolerance testing ensure perfect balance between the left and right channels. The quasi-ribbon midrange and bass drivers, paired with the True Ribbon tweeter, deliver a cohesive sound that faithfully reproduces every detail of the original recording.

The Magnepan 20.7x EXperience

The 20.7x delivers a level of realism and immersion that surpasses its predecessor. Enhanced imaging and sound-staging create a three-dimensional soundscape that puts you in the middle of the music. Highs are airier and more detailed, mids are richer and more articulate, and bass is tighter and more precise.

The X-Series upgrades reduce distortion and improve tonal balance across the frequency spectrum. Whether you're listening to the delicate nuances of a string quartet or the powerful dynamics of a full orchestra, the 20.7x captures every emotion and texture with striking clarity.

Inside the Magnepan 20.7x: X-Series Technology

The ultra-light aluminum ribbon tweeter delivers extended high frequencies with speed and accuracy, while the quasi-ribbon midrange and bass drivers provide responsive and natural sound across the rest of the spectrum.

Magnepan X-Series Wiring - 15-gauge solid copper, silver soldered connections

The X upgrades introduce copper-rich polypropylene capacitors, precision-matched inductors, and silver soldered connections to the crossover design. Simplified circuits and higher-grade components reduce distortion and ensure tight tonal balance between channels. The result is a speaker system built for fidelity with no shortcuts in the signal path.

Reviews

After living with the Magnepan 20.7s for over three months, I have no choice but to report that, in my opinion, this speaker does indeed set new standards as to the capabilities of a flagship planar transducer.

Don Saltzman,The Absolute Sound · February 2015

The 20.7 is the fullest-range, most neutral, seamless, and grainless single-panel loudspeaker that Magnepan has yet made. The 20.7 does a disappearing act that is hard to believe given the size of its panels, vanishing into a soundfield that can balloon to colossal proportions. I don't think there is another speaker that makes a well-recorded piano sound more like an actual piano than this Maggie. If the sound absolute is what you crave, Magnepan's new flagships earn my highest and warmest recommendation.

FAQ

How does the 20.7x compare to the 3.7x?

The 3.7x is a single-panel three-way design. The 20.7x adds a push-pull magnet structure (magnets on both sides of the diaphragm) for the bass panel, dramatically increasing efficiency and bass authority. The 20.7x also has larger panels (29 inches wide, 79 inches tall), extending frequency response down to 25Hz. The difference in dynamic headroom, bass weight, and the sheer scale of the presentation is substantial.

What amplifier power do I need for the Magnepan 20.7x?

The 20.7x rewards powerful amplification. While it plays at moderate levels with 200 watts per channel into 4 ohms, it truly opens up with 300-500+ watts. Current delivery is paramount. Audia Flight Strumento monoblocks and Kora amplifiers are ideal partners at this level. These speakers scale with amplifier quality more than almost any other design. Call or text Mike at 410-239-2020 for system matching.

How big does my room need to be for the 20.7x?

The 20.7x stands nearly 6.5 feet tall and 29 inches wide. A room of at least 16x22 feet is recommended, with the speakers positioned 4-7 feet from the front wall. The large panel area needs space to breathe, and sitting too close can make individual driver sections audible rather than blending into a seamless whole. Ceiling height of 8 feet or more is important given the speaker's height.

What specifically changed with the X upgrade on the 20.7?

The 20.7x receives the full X-Series crossover overhaul: copper-rich polypropylene capacitors precision-matched between channels, bobbin-wound copper coils tested for inductance and DCR to tight tolerances, 15-gauge solid copper bus wire with shortened paths, and silver-soldered connections throughout. The improvements in channel balance and distortion reduction are particularly significant on a speaker of this caliber, where the resolution is high enough to reveal every upstream improvement.

Is the 20.7x worth the premium over the 3.7x?

The 20.7x is not just a larger 3.7x. The push-pull bass architecture, larger radiating area, and extended low-frequency response (25Hz vs 35Hz) produce a fundamentally different listening experience. On orchestral music, large-scale jazz, and anything with real low bass, the 20.7x creates a sense of scale and weight that single-panel designs cannot match. If your room can accommodate them and your amplification is up to the task, the 20.7x is a significant step toward the absolute in planar reproduction.

How long do Magnepan speakers last?

Magnepan speakers are built for decades of use. Many 20-series owners report 20-30+ years of trouble-free service. The main wear item is the adhesive bonding the foil to the Mylar diaphragm, which can degrade over very long periods. Magnepan offers factory refurbishment for older models. The 20.7x carries a 3-year limited warranty to the original purchaser.
