Mike's Take

There are two kinds of integrated amplifiers: you either want something very modern with built-in streaming, or you want something simple and purely analog that will still be relevant fifty years from now. The Sphinx is the latter. It will never feel outdated.

Description

The Rogue Audio Sphinx v3 is a hybrid integrated amplifier that delivers 100 watts per channel by pairing a pure tube mu-follower preamplifier with a Class D solid-state output stage, all powered by a custom 375VA toroidal transformer. With a built-in MM/MC phono stage, a discrete MOSFET headphone amplifier, and tube-driven active outputs for subwoofer connection, it packs the functionality of three separate components into a single 25-pound chassis designed and built in Pennsylvania.

Key Features of the Sphinx v3
  • 100 Watts Per Channel (8 Ohms): Hypex UHD MOSFET-based Class D output stage with a damping factor exceeding 1,000 for authoritative speaker control
  • Pure Tube Mu-Follower Preamplifier: Matched 12AU7 tubes in a mu-follower topology borrowed from Rogue's higher-end designs
  • Built-In MM/MC Phono Stage: User-adjustable gain settings of 44dB and 60dB accommodate both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges
  • Discrete MOSFET Headphone Amplifier: Capable of driving demanding headphones with a dedicated front-panel 1/4" output
  • Custom 375VA Toroidal Transformer: Massive power supply provides deep energy storage for low-frequency response and dynamic headroom
  • Tube-Driven Active Outputs: Variable outputs driven by the tube stage for connecting a subwoofer or bi-amping
  • Alps Custom Volume Potentiometer: Precision volume control with optional metal remote
  • Eco-Conscious Design: Standby power of just 6 watts, 132 watts at half power, and 250 watts at full output
  • Handcrafted in the USA: Designed and built in Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania, with every unit tested, burned in, and auditioned
Hybrid Amplifier Architecture

The Sphinx v3 uses the same mu-follower preamplifier topology found in Rogue's more expensive designs, including the Pharaoh II and the RP preamp line. A pair of matched 12AU7 tubes handles all voltage amplification in the preamp stage, preserving the harmonic texture that makes tube preamplifiers desirable. The tube preamp feeds into a pair of Hypex UHD amplifier modules, MOSFET-based Class D output devices that deliver 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms with a damping factor exceeding 1,000. A custom 375VA toroidal transformer and a massive high-storage linear power supply with multiple regulated stages provide clean, stable power throughout the circuit. The heavy 2-ounce copper circuit board uses precision components and short signal paths to keep the noise floor low.

Built-In Phono Stage

The Sphinx v3's phono section is a scaled-down version of Rogue's standalone Triton II phono preamplifier design. It accommodates both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges with user-adjustable gain settings of 44dB and 60dB, selectable via internal switches. This means you can run most cartridges without needing a separate phono preamp. For a fully dedicated phono stage with more loading options and tube amplification, see our Rogue Audio Ares II or the solid-state Triton II.

Headphone Amplifier

Unlike many integrated amplifiers that use inexpensive chip amplifiers for headphone output, the Sphinx v3 features a discrete MOSFET-based headphone circuit. This design can source substantial current, making it suitable for high-impedance studio headphones and sensitive in-ear monitors alike. The headphone output is on the front panel via a standard 1/4" jack. For a dedicated headphone experience with tube amplification, Rogue also offers the RH-5 Headphone Amplifier.

Power Supply Design

The Sphinx v3's power supply starts with a custom 375VA toroidal transformer feeding a massive high-capacity linear supply. Multiple regulated power supply stages isolate the critical preamp and amplifier sections from each other, reducing noise coupling between stages. The result is deep energy reserves for bass passages and dynamic peaks, combined with a quiet, black background through the midrange and treble. Rogue's slow-start turn-on sequencing brings the amplifier up gradually, protecting tubes and extending the life of all components.

What Changed from Previous Sphinx Models
  • Redesigned MM/MC Phono Section: The v3 received a completely new phono stage based on a scaled-down version of the Triton II, with user-adjustable gain (44/60dB) for both MM and MC cartridges
  • New Headphone Amplifier: The chip-amp headphone circuit was replaced with a discrete MOSFET design capable of driving more demanding headphones
  • Upgraded Components: Improved components and power supply sections feeding the output modules
  • New Circuit Boards: Redesigned main and rear circuit boards with improved layout
"Magnum" Version

The Magnum edition upgrades the standard Sphinx v3 with premium components throughout:

  • Power supply upgrades: Enhanced capacitors and regulated supply stages for improved dynamics
  • Upgraded coupling capacitors: Premium coupling caps in the signal path
  • Upgraded phono stage: Premium components in the phono section for lower noise
  • JJ Gold Pin 12AU7 tubes: Premium matched tubes with tighter tolerances and lower noise

FAQ

What is the difference between the Sphinx v3 and the Sphinx v3 Magnum?

The Magnum edition ($1,995) upgrades the standard Sphinx v3 ($1,795) with premium components throughout: enhanced power supply capacitors for improved dynamics, upgraded coupling capacitors in the signal path, premium phono stage components, JJ Gold Pin 12AU7 tubes with tighter tolerances and lower noise, upgraded binding posts, and an included metal remote control (optional on the standard model). The core circuit topology and 100-watt output are identical. The Magnum refines the already well-regarded platform with better parts in the areas that matter most.

Does the Sphinx v3 have a built-in DAC?

No. The Sphinx v3 is a purely analog integrated amplifier with four RCA line-level inputs and a built-in MM/MC phono stage. It has no digital inputs (no USB, optical, coaxial, or Bluetooth). If you need a DAC for streaming or digital sources, connect an external DAC to one of the three line-level inputs. This keeps the Sphinx v3's signal path clean and allows you to choose a DAC that fits your needs and budget.

Is the Sphinx v3 quiet, or should I expect tube noise?

The Sphinx v3 runs very quietly. The tube preamp section uses a pair of 12AU7 small signal tubes (not power output tubes), and the Class D Hypex UHD power stage has very low self-noise. Most owners report a silent background with no audible hum or hiss at normal listening distances. If you experience noise, it is typically a tube or cable issue rather than a design characteristic. The Magnum version uses JJ Gold Pin tubes selected for even lower noise.

Does the Sphinx v3 have enough power for my speakers?

The Sphinx v3 delivers 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms with a damping factor exceeding 1,000, which provides more speaker control than many amplifiers rated at higher power. It drives most bookshelf and floorstanding speakers effectively. Stereophile's Herb Reichert called it "one of the greatest high-value audio products of all time" after testing it with Harbeth, KEF, and Magnepan speakers. If you have very demanding or low-sensitivity speakers and listen at high volumes, the Pharaoh II at 250 watts may be a better match.

Should I upgrade from the Sphinx v3 to the Cronus Magnum III?

These amplifiers serve different priorities rather than being a direct step up. The Sphinx v3 ($1,795) is a hybrid using Class D power with a tube preamp, delivering clean, controlled sound with excellent efficiency at just 6 watts standby. The Cronus Magnum III ($3,495) is fully tube-powered with KT88 output tubes, offering richer harmonic character and a dimensional midrange, plus triode/ultralinear switching. If you love the Sphinx v3's sound and want more of it with better components, consider the Magnum upgrade first. If you want the full tube experience, the Cronus Magnum III is the logical move.
