Description

The Perlisten X3iw is a two-way in-wall speaker and the least expensive in-wall Perlisten builds. It carries the X-Series driver hardware into a wall cavity, where the extra internal volume lets it play lower than the on-wall models, so it can hand off to a subwoofer at a lower crossover point. Perlisten timbre-matches it to the X3w, which means an X3iw sits in an X-Series system without changing the voice of it.

Key Features of the Perlisten X3iw
  • Two-Way In-Wall Design: The same driver arrangement as the X3w, with a woofer above and below the tweeter, built into the wall instead of onto it.
  • Timbre-Matched to the X-Series: Perlisten voices the X3iw to the rest of the line, so it can be mixed with X-Series on-walls and the X2ic in-ceiling across channels.
  • More Internal Volume: A wall cavity gives the X3iw more air behind the drivers than any on-wall in the line, which is what lets it reach lower and cross over lower.
  • Mixed-Material Cabinet: MDF sides, a steel rear plate, and an aluminum front frame, chosen deliberately to bring an in-wall Perlisten down to this price.
  • Steel-Rod Mounting: Instead of the plastic flip tabs common on in-walls, the X3iw clamps with a steel rod.
  • Paintable Magnetic Grille: Ships with a powder-coated steel grille that holds on magnetically and takes paint, so it can disappear into the wall.
  • Satin Black: One finish, supplied with a white paintable metal grille.
About Perlisten Audio

Perlisten is a Wisconsin-based speaker company founded by engineers out of the pro-audio and home-theater worlds. Perlisten engineers to measured performance and publishes full spinorama and directivity data on its designs. The X-Series brings Perlisten's controlled-dispersion waveguide approach to on-wall, in-wall and in-ceiling formats.

How the X3iw Is Built

The X3iw uses a different material mix from the aluminum on-wall models, and Perlisten is direct about why: this is the model built to reach a price. The cabinet sides are MDF, the rear plate is steel, and the front frame is aluminum, with the same injection-molded baffle the rest of the line uses.

The mounting hardware is where it departs most from convention. Most in-wall speakers clamp to the drywall with plastic flip tabs. The X3iw uses a steel rod instead, and Perlisten tested it across the full range of wall thicknesses an installer runs into. The grille is powder-coated steel, magnetic, and shared with Perlisten's other in-wall models. It ships white and paintable so it can be finished to match the wall.

What the Extra Cabinet Volume Buys

An on-wall speaker carries its own enclosure, and on a cabinet 100mm deep that enclosure is small. An in-wall borrows the cavity behind it, so the X3iw has considerably more air behind its drivers than the X2w, X3w or X5w. More volume means lower extension, and lower extension means the subwoofer crossover can sit lower than it would with an on-wall. If the system is a stereo pair in a room, or a left, center and right array flanking a display where you want the mains carrying more of the low end themselves, that is the argument for going in-wall rather than on-wall.

Where the X3iw Fits in the Perlisten X-Series

Every X-Series model runs the same tweeter and woofer hardware, so the tonal character holds as you move across the line or mix formats. What changes is the driver count, the sensitivity, and whether the speaker sits on the wall, in the wall, or in the ceiling.

$1,195
The ceiling model. One 6.5" carbon fiber woofer and the 38mm silk dome tweeter sit behind a waveguide that covers the whole front face, in an infinite baffle design with no back can. Built for height channels and for audio in rooms where nothing should be on the wall.
$1,395
The compact on-wall: one 5.5" carbon fiber woofer under the tweeter, 88dB sensitivity, in a 330mm cabinet.
$1,695
Adds a second 5.5" woofer, placing one on each side of the tweeter in an MTM array. Sensitivity rises to 89dB and the horizontal pattern tightens. Like the X5w, its grille logo repositions so the speaker reads correctly mounted horizontally.

The in-wall version of the X3w. Same two-way driver arrangement, built into the wall rather than onto it, with the cavity behind it supplying more internal volume than any on-wall in the line.
$1,995
Steps up to a 3-way with four 5.5" woofers, two of them high-excursion units that run without the waveguide grille for maximum cone travel. 92dB sensitivity and the widest, most even horizontal control in the line.

The X3iw is the one to choose when the speaker should disappear into the wall and you want the mains carrying more of the low end before the subwoofer takes over. See what is shipping now in Perlisten X-Series.

Matching the X-Series With Other Perlisten Speakers

Every X-Series model shares the same tweeter and woofer hardware, so Perlisten designed the line to be mixed. Larger models across the front, smaller ones for surrounds, the X2ic overhead: any combination holds one voice, and Perlisten's measurements across the line show the same response shape from model to model.

The X-Series also voices with the A-Series, which was the starting point for its large waveguide, and with the R-Series, which uses a silk dome of its own. The S-Series is the exception. Its beryllium tweeter is a different top end, so an S-Series front stage is not the one to extend with X-Series surrounds.

Where the X-Series Fits

The X-Series is a near-field design, engineered for a normal viewing setup: a display, seating at a sensible distance, and speakers on the wall around it. In that role it measures like the rest of the Perlisten line, which is the entire point of the series.

A large dedicated theater asks for more speaker. Perlisten's answer there is the Architectural range: R-Series and S-Series in-walls and in-ceilings with bigger drivers and more of them, up to the S7i. We can spec a front stage from either family. Get in touch.

Pairing the X3iw With a Subwoofer

Perlisten builds the X-Series to run with a subwoofer and recommends crossing over between 80 and 100Hz. Below 100Hz the roll-off is deliberately the same shape on every X-Series model, and Perlisten counts on the room adding 10 to 12dB back below that point, so the handoff to a subwoofer behaves predictably and calibration software has an easy target to work with.
