The Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary Edition is a modern remaster of one of the most significant compact monitors in British hi-fi history. First launched in 1987, the AE1 delivered dynamics and bass weight that shamed far larger speakers. This edition rebuilds that character from scratch: a spun ceramic/alloy cone, a new 29mm alloy-dome tweeter, and a re-engineered 5-ohm motor that makes it noticeably easier to drive than the studio original. Available in High Gloss Black or High Gloss Walnut.
The reborn AE1 has been warmly received. It earned a StereoNET Applause Award and an 87% Sound Quality score from Hi-Fi News, which called it "a subtle upgrade on the original design" that marries "speed and articulation with soundstage precision."
Key Features of the Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary Edition
-
Spun Ceramic/Alloy Cone: A 125mm mid-bass driver built on the straight-sided aluminium profile, strengthened with a hard-anodised ceramic layer on both sides for extreme rigidity and the classic AE1 speed.
-
New 29mm Alloy Dome Tweeter: A larger voice coil and slightly larger aluminium dome lower distortion; ferrofluid cooled and damped for greater power handling and lower thermal compression.
-
Twin Front Reflex Ports: Re-tooled with an internal flare that reduces port distortion and allows more bass output from the compact cabinet.
-
Easier to Drive: A motor redesigned around a 5-ohm DC resistance (down from the original's 7 ohms), so the AE1 40th needs less power than the studio classic.
-
RSC Cabinet Construction: Acoustic Energy's Resonance Suppression Composite bracing stiffens the enclosure to match the original's inert, coloration-free character without the old concrete-lined drawbacks.
-
Minimalist Signature Crossover: Low-order filters and premium components drawn from the luxury 'Signature' AE1, tuned for a natural, punchy midrange and a warm, forgiving top end.
-
High Power Handling: Rated to 150 watts for high-volume playback with minimal compression.
-
Ten-Layer High-Gloss Finishes: High Gloss Black or High Gloss Walnut, each hand-finished in ten layers of lacquer, with cloth magnetic-fit grilles.
A Legend, Remastered
Recreating a classic is a delicate balance. The goal for the 40th Anniversary Edition was to capture the spirit of the 1987 original, its speed, its attack, and its surprising bass weight, without cloning nearly 40-year-old technology. With the original parts long out of production, Acoustic Energy re-tooled from scratch, crafting a speaker that sounds like the old one but cleaner, more reliable, and easier to drive. It is a compact monitor that doesn't just play music; it projects it with a startling sense of reality.

How the AE1 40th Anniversary Makes Its Sound
The heart of the AE1 has always been its mid-bass driver. For this edition, Acoustic Energy retained the critical straight-sided aluminium profile and the "spinning" manufacturing process (rather than pressing) that gives the cone its immense strength, then strengthened it further with a hard-anodised ceramic layer on both sides, effectively forming a sandwich. Beneath the trademark aluminium dust cap sits a thermally conductive aluminium voice coil and a powerful motor with an added aluminium shorting ring that dramatically lowers distortion. Because the motor was redesigned around a 5-ohm DC resistance instead of the original's 7 ohms, the new AE1 is easier to drive and pairs happily with capable integrated amplifiers.
AE1 40th Anniversary Tweeter and Crossover
While the woofer provides the punch, the new 29mm tweeter delivers the detail. Larger than the original unit, it blends with the mid-bass through a crossover inspired by the luxury "Signature" AE1s, using low-order filters for a natural, live presentation that is forgiving yet revealing. To get the best imaging from these monitors, we highly recommend placing them on high-mass speaker stands so the tweeter sits at ear height and the cabinet is mechanically grounded.
Cabinet, Ports, and Finish
The cabinet is tuned to mimic the acoustic properties of the original but finished to a far higher standard. Coated in ten layers of lacquer, the High Gloss Black or Walnut finishes are flawless, and the RSC composite construction keeps the box acoustically inert to prevent coloration. Since the original ports were no longer available, Acoustic Energy re-tooled the twin front reflex ports with an internal flare that reduces distortion and lets the compact enclosure move more air. To maintain this pristine look and the best signal transfer, consider terminated speaker cables for a secure connection to the rear binding posts.

Speaker Stand Note
If ordering speaker stands, the walnut finish does not match the AE1 40th Anniversary. We recommend ordering the stands in High Gloss Piano Black.
