Description

The Acoustic Energy AE2 40th Anniversary Edition is a limited-edition standmount that wraps two 125mm mid/bass drivers around the tweeter developed for the AE1 40th Anniversary, so the smaller monitor's speed arrives with real bass weight and headroom behind it. It is a modern rebuild of the AE2 Signature, the flagship Acoustic Energy built in the 1990s, in High Gloss Walnut or High Gloss Black.

Key Features of the Acoustic Energy AE2 40th Anniversary Edition
  • Offset M-T-M Driver Layout: Two 125mm mid/bass cones sit above and below the tweeter in an offset arrangement across the baffle, doubling the radiating area of the AE1 40th.
  • Ceramic-Coated Aluminum Cones: Each 125mm spun, hard-anodized aluminum cone carries a thick hard-anodized ceramic layer on both sides for rigidity without added mass.
  • Anniversary Tweeter: A 29mm anodized aluminum dome on a larger voice coil, ferrofluid cooled and damped, behind the machined anniversary faceplate.
  • Low-Order Signature Crossover: Low-order filters and high-quality components drawn from the luxury Signature version of the original AE2, crossed at 2.2kHz.
  • Steel-Lined RSC Cabinet: Constrained-layer HDF and bitumen walls from 18 to 32mm, braced, and strategically lined with 3mm steel plates.
  • Triple Reflex Ports: Three ports on the front baffle tune the larger enclosure and let the pair of drivers move more air.
  • 35Hz to 45kHz: A 15Hz gain in bass extension over the AE1 40th Anniversary, with 200W power handling and 88dB sensitivity into 6 ohms.
  • Ten-Layer Finishes: Ten layers of high gloss black paint, or walnut wood veneer, with magnetic cloth grilles.
The AE2 Signature, Rebuilt

The AE2 40th Anniversary derives from the AE2 Signature, the flagship Acoustic Energy built in the 1990s. It is a limited production run in full 40th Anniversary specification, using the drive units developed for the AE1 40th Anniversary, with aesthetic detail sympathetic to the original and its performance updated to today's level.

Acoustic Energy's stated aim was to upscale the AE2 sound with more bass extension and headroom, translating to lower midband distortion and greater transparency at typical listening levels. Like the AE1 40th Anniversary, it is aimed squarely at the purist. Low-order, minimalist crossovers give a fast, live sound, forgoing technical niceties and paper specifications to drill down to the heart of the music.

What the Second Driver Adds to the AE2 40th Anniversary

Two 125mm mid/bass cones instead of one takes the AE2 40th down to 35Hz where the AE1 40th reaches 50Hz, lifts sensitivity from 87dB to 88dB, and raises power handling from 150W to 200W. The greater radiating area also offers slightly higher efficiency, lower distortion, and the ability to move more air.

The woofer was developed to match the characteristic sound of the original AE2: a cone slightly larger than the one it replaces, conforming to modern 125mm standards, spun rather than pressed, then strengthened with a thick hard-anodized ceramic layer on both sides. In practice that is the scale and authority of a small floorstander with the low cabinet coloration, 3D imaging and placement freedom of a standmount.

The AE2 40th Anniversary Tweeter

The tweeter is a 29mm anodized aluminum dome, carried on a new larger voice coil that supports a slightly larger dome to lower distortion. Like the original it is ferrofluid cooled and damped, which keeps it composed at the volumes the twin woofers make easy.

Placing that tweeter between the two mid/bass drivers, offset across the baffle, is what lets a two-driver speaker keep the coherence of a small monitor. It is also what the cabinet had to be engineered around.

Low-Order Crossover, Signature Lineage

The crossover splits at 2.2kHz using low-order filters and high-quality components, drawing inspiration from the luxury Signature version of the original speaker. The stated result is a very natural, live dynamic sound: a warm natural midrange, good bass weight for the size, forgiving high frequencies, and exceptional punch throughout the operating range.

Inside the AE2 40th Anniversary Cabinet

The cabinet is 18 to 32mm RSC constrained-layer HDF and bitumen construction, braced, strategically lined with 3mm steel plates, and triple reflex-ported. Working within the offset M-T-M layout, those plates were added specifically to bring the cabinet's coloration down to the AE1 40th Anniversary's level.

The enclosure has also been tuned to match the acoustic character of the original AE2, and the three front ports vent the larger internal volume a pair of 125mm drivers needs.

High Gloss Walnut and High Gloss Black

Two finishes are made: High Gloss Walnut, a real walnut wood veneer, and High Gloss Black, built up in ten layers of high gloss paint. Both carry the gold driver fixings and the machined anniversary tweeter faceplate, and both ship with magnetic-fit cloth grilles.

FAQ

How much amplifier power does the Acoustic Energy AE2 40th Anniversary need?

Acoustic Energy recommends a minimum of 50 and a maximum of 200 watts into 8 ohms per channel. The AE2 40th is a medium-sensitivity speaker at 88dB into 6 ohms, so quality of drive matters as much as raw wattage: Acoustic Energy's own guidance is that an amplifier able to double its 8-ohm power rating into 4 ohms is a good indicator that its current delivery will be adequate. Worth knowing if you are coming from the AE1 40th: that speaker's woofer was re-engineered around a 5-ohm motor, while the AE2's is designed to the original 7-ohm standard to keep the impedance sensible, so the AE2 asks a little more of the amplifier. Browse our integrated amplifiers from $2,000 to $5,000.

What is the difference between the AE2 40th Anniversary and the AE1 40th Anniversary?

The AE2 uses the same newly developed woofer and tweeter units as the AE1 40th Anniversary, but places two 125mm mid/bass drivers in an offset M-T-M layout around the tweeter instead of one. That takes bass extension from 50Hz down to 35Hz, power handling from 150W to 200W, and sensitivity from 87dB to 88dB. The cabinet grows with it: 18 to 32mm constrained-layer walls lined with 3mm steel plates and three front reflex ports, against the AE1's twin ports. The AE1 40th is the compact studio monitor reborn; the AE2 40th is that speaker scaled up for output and bass weight.

When is the Acoustic Energy AE2 40th Anniversary available, and what will it cost?

Acoustic Energy has the AE2 40th Anniversary Edition available from October 2026 as a limited-time production run, in High Gloss Walnut and High Gloss Black. US pricing has not been published yet, which is why this page shows Price TBA rather than a placeholder figure. The notify box above records your email against this product so the price and the arrival date reach you the day they are confirmed.

Do the AE2 40th Anniversary speakers need stands, and what kind?

Yes, and Acoustic Energy is specific about which ones. The AE2 40th Anniversary is intended to be used on speaker floor-stands standing relatively clear of room boundaries, built to a direct-coupled pillared construction with mass loading preferred, a top plate between 160mm and 180mm wide and 220mm to 240mm deep finished with rubber pads, and M6 floor spikes underneath. Overall height should put the speaker's top panel just below head height when you are seated. Near-wall bracket mounting is possible, but Acoustic Energy notes it results in less accurate performance. The AE2 40th is a bigger cabinet than the AE1 40th at 235mm wide and 315mm deep, so it takes the larger of Acoustic Energy's two official stand plates rather than the one that suits the AE1.
