This edition rebuilds that character from scratch: a spun ceramic/alloy cone, a new 29mm alloy-dome tweeter, and a re-engineered 5-ohm motor that makes it noticeably easier to drive than the studio original. The goal for the 40th Anniversary Edition was to capture the spirit of the 1987 original, its speed, its attack, and its surprising bass weight, without cloning nearly 40-year-old technology. Each element was crafted to sound the same as the old, with some of the rougher edges smoothed off, and the new AE1s are easy to drive and require less power. It is a compact monitor that doesn't just play music; it projects it with a startling sense of reality.

How the AE1 40th Anniversary Makes Its Sound

The heart of the AE1 has always been its mid-bass driver. For this edition, Acoustic Energy retained the critical straight-sided aluminium profile and the little-used "spinning" forming process rather than the more usual pressing, then strengthened the cone further with a hard-anodised ceramic layer on both sides, effectively forming a sandwich. Beneath the trademark aluminium dust cap sits a thermally conductive aluminium voice coil and a powerful motor with an added aluminium shorting ring that dramatically lowers distortion. Because the motor was redesigned around a 5-ohm DC resistance instead of the original's 7 ohms, the new AE1 is easier to drive and pairs happily with capable integrated amplifiers.

AE1 40th Anniversary Tweeter and Crossover

While the woofer provides the punch, the new 29mm tweeter delivers the detail. Larger than the original unit, it blends with the mid-bass through a crossover inspired by the luxury "Signature" AE1s, using low-order filters for a natural, live presentation that is forgiving yet revealing. To get the best imaging from these monitors, we recommend mass-loaded speaker stands that put the top panel just below head height when you are seated.

Cabinet, Ports, and Finish

The cabinet has been tuned to match the characteristic sound of the original AE1. It is coated in ten layers of high gloss black paint or walnut wood veneer, and Acoustic Energy's RSC material raises cabinet stiffness over its usual formula. Since the original ports were no longer available, Acoustic Energy re-tooled the twin front reflex ports with an internal flare that reduces distortion and lets the compact enclosure move more air. To maintain this pristine look and the best signal transfer, consider terminated speaker cables for a secure connection to the rear binding posts.
