The Magnepan 3.7i is a three-way dipole rated at 4 ohms and 86dB sensitivity (2.83V). The bass and midrange are quasi-ribbon panels, aluminum foil adhered to a Mylar diaphragm, and they run on separate diaphragm sections of the same sheet, so each behaves as its own radiator. The tweeter is a 60.6-inch true ribbon: a strip of aluminum foil suspended freely with no substrate behind it, so the conductor itself is the diaphragm. It is the same true ribbon approach Magnepan uses in the 20.7 and 30.7 above it, on a panel a fraction of their price. One important detail: the 3.7i is the last step before the flagships. You get the 60.6-inch true ribbon, more panel area, and the midrange and bass on separate diaphragms so they behave independently, with less crosstalk. Above it, the 20.7 and 30.7 re-engineer the bass and midrange entirely, and the price more than doubles, then doubles again. If you can stretch, the 3.7x is that same panel with the X-Series parts upgrade, which is where most people land.

The 3.7i not only preserved but actually expanded upon the 3.7's overall coherency. From the heart of the midrange and on up into the upper midrange, the new speaker sounds noticeably smoother and more at ease with itself. To my way of thinking, the 3.7i is easily one of the greatest performers I've yet heard in its price class, in large part because it does so many things right and so few things wrong. Many audiophiles regard the ribbon tweeter as one of the finest high-frequency transducers in the world.

The 3.7i is a 4-ohm, 86dB speaker and one of the more demanding loads in the Magnepan line, so it wants a high-current amplifier that stays composed into 4 ohms. Two integrated amplifiers we pair with Maggies often are the Primare I35, a high-current design that stays stable into 4 ohms, and the Rogue Audio Pharaoh II, which mates a tube preamp stage with a high-current power section. As dipoles, the 3.7i radiate from the back as well as the front, so they like some space behind them to open up, usually around three feet off the wall to start. Add a little toe-in toward your listening seat and adjust by ear from there. The back wave is what gives Magnepans their open, out-of-the-box soundstage, so the main thing is giving it some air to develop rather than pushing the panels tight against the wall.

MG stands for Magneplanar, Magnepan's term for its planar-magnetic panels, so MG3.7i and Magnepan 3.7i are the same speaker. The original MG 3.7 is the earlier version; the 3.7i is Magnepan's improved revision of it. You will see Magnepan use the MG prefix on its own materials. There is also an upgraded X-Series version, the 3.7x, which adds premium internal parts and sells at a higher price.
