Mike's Take

The 3.7 takes everything the 2.7 does and pushes it much farther. The 40-inch ribbon becomes 60.6 inches. That extra length gives the speaker more air and sparkle, more detail, and more effortless top end.

You also get additional surface area in the midrange and bass sections. The 3.7 has support structure behind the Mylar so that even though it is still a single sheet, the driver behaves as two separate radiators. This improves separation and reduces distortion.

Above the 3.7 sit the 20.7 and the 30.7. The 20.7 goes push-pull, with magnets on both sides of the bass and midrange. The 30.7 puts each driver on its own sheet of Mylar so every one can be optimized for its own frequency range. That is a lot more speaker and a lot more money. The 3.7 is the last step before the flagships, and that is what makes it such a strong value.

The Magnepan 3.7i is a full-range, three-way planar-magnetic speaker built around a 60.6-inch true ribbon tweeter sitting over quasi-ribbon bass and midrange panels. The midrange and bass run on separate diaphragm sections, which cuts crosstalk between the drivers, and the whole panel reaches 35Hz to 40kHz. Sound comes from thin diaphragms suspended in a magnetic field, not cones in a box, which is where the open, see-through Magnepan presentation comes from.

Positive Feedback calls the 3.7i "a noticeable improvement over the 3.7 and a true value for the money." Magnepan hand-builds every 3.7i to order in your choice of finish, and as the largest Magnepan dealer in the United States, we often find your combination already on hand at Magnepan. Key Features of the Magnepan 3.7i

  • 60.6-Inch True Ribbon Tweeter: Pure aluminum foil suspended freely with no substrate, the lowest-mass driver in the design, for fast, airy, low-distortion highs. The same true ribbon design used in the 20.7 and 30.7 above it.
  • Midrange and Bass on Separate Diaphragms: Support structure behind the Mylar lets one sheet behave as two independent radiators, improving separation and reducing distortion.
  • Quasi-Ribbon Bass and Midrange: Aluminum foil bonded to a Mylar diaphragm, the "quasi-ribbon" surface visible through the front of the grille cloth.
  • Dipole Planar Design: Radiates from both the front and back of the panel, the trait behind Magnepan's open, room-filling soundstage.
  • Tall, Slim Panel: 71 inches tall and just 1.625 inches deep, a full-size planar that still tucks close to the wall when it has to.
  • Made in the USA: Hand-built at Magnepan's factory in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
  • 24 Finish Combinations: Four grille fabrics and six trim options, so the panel matches the room rather than fighting it.

How the Magnepan 3.7i Makes Its Sound

The Magnepan 3.7i is a three-way dipole rated at 4 ohms and 86dB sensitivity (2.83V). The bass and midrange are quasi-ribbon panels, aluminum foil adhered to a Mylar diaphragm, and they run on separate diaphragm sections of the same sheet, so each behaves as its own radiator. The tweeter is a 60.6-inch true ribbon: a strip of aluminum foil suspended freely with no substrate behind it, so the conductor itself is the diaphragm. It is the same true ribbon approach Magnepan uses in the 20.7 and 30.7 above it, on a panel a fraction of their price. All three sections radiate front and back as a dipole, for low stored energy and the open, unboxed sound Magnepan is known for. Like every Magnepan, the 3.7i rewards a strong, current-capable amplifier.

What the 3.7i's Longer Ribbon and Bigger Panel Deliver

Stepping up to the 3.7i is about what the longer ribbon and the larger panel give you, not a room measurement. The 60.6-inch ribbon extends the top end to 40kHz with more air, sparkle, and effortless detail than the 40-inch ribbon below it, and the added radiating area means a bigger soundstage with more output before the panel works hard. The separate midrange and bass diaphragms keep the two ranges from smearing into each other, so dense music stays sorted. Choose the 3.7i when you want the most resolution and scale in the i-series. Like any dipole it rewards a little space behind it to open up, but that is a setup detail to dial in, not a limit on who it is for.

How Much Bass Does the Magnepan 3.7i Have?

The Magnepan 3.7i reaches down to 35Hz from its panel, the deepest of the i-series, with the speed and coherence that come from making bass on the same kind of thin diaphragm as the mids and highs. Like any panel, it stays lean in the lowest octave rather than thumping, so for a very large room or full weight under organ, synth, and film, a fast, articulate subwoofer fills in the bottom without dragging on the panel's speed. We most often pair Magnepan with REL and Perlisten subwoofers, since both blend cleanly with a planar rather than fighting it.

Fabric and Trim Options for the Magnepan 3.7i

The Magnepan 3.7i is built to order in four grille fabrics (Black, Off-White, Cherry White, and Gray) and six side-trim finishes (Natural Oak, Black Oak, Dark Cherry, Black Aluminum, Silver Aluminum, and Gold Aluminum). That gives 24 combinations, from an all-black panel that hides in a media wall to natural oak rails that warm up a living space. Fabric and trim are a cosmetic choice and do not change the sound. Each pair ships on Magnepan's standard T-feet, with optional oval bases available.

Where the 3.7i fits in the Magnepan line

How the 3.7i compares to the rest of the range, and what the X-Series upgrade and the step down the line change.

$6,495 / pair
The first step up to a true ribbon tweeter, a 40-inch ribbon over quasi-ribbon bass and midrange. 40 Hz to 30 kHz. The core true-ribbon sound in a smaller, less expensive package.

$9,495 / pair
A longer 60.6-inch true ribbon tweeter, with the midrange and bass on separate diaphragms for less crosstalk, plus more panel area. 35 Hz to 40 kHz. The most resolution and scale in the i-series.
Magnepan 3.7x Mike's pick #2 best seller
From $13,000 / pair
The 3.7 panel with Magnepan's X-Series parts upgrade: capacitors, coils, resistors, and wiring replaced, circuitry simplified, tolerances tightened. Sharper imaging and a more natural sound, same panel and footprint.
Mike's Take
One important detail: the 3.7i is the last step before the flagships. You get the 60.6-inch true ribbon, more panel area, and the midrange and bass on separate diaphragms so they behave independently, with less crosstalk. Above it, the 20.7 and 30.7 re-engineer the bass and midrange entirely, and the price more than doubles, then doubles again. If you can stretch, the 3.7x is that same panel with the X-Series parts upgrade, which is where most people land.
