Mike's Take

This is where you get your first true ribbon tweeter. A quasi ribbon uses aluminum foil glued to Mylar. A true ribbon tweeter is pure aluminum suspended without any backing material. There is no excess mass. The conductor itself is the diaphragm.

The 2.7 uses a 40-inch ribbon tweeter. It is a major upgrade in clarity, speed, and delicacy due to the lower mass.

The Magnepan 2.7i is a full-range, three-way planar-magnetic speaker built around a 40-inch true ribbon tweeter sitting over quasi-ribbon bass and midrange panels. It is the least expensive Magnepan that uses a true ribbon tweeter, pure aluminum suspended with no backing material, which gives faster, more delicate highs than the all quasi-ribbon 1.7i below it. Sound comes from thin diaphragms in a magnetic field, not cones in a box, reaching 40Hz to 30kHz.

Future Audiophile calls the 2.7i "Magnepan's least expensive full-range model to offer a true ribbon tweeter," with "a see-through quality, with a big three-dimensional soundstage and exceptional presentation of image depth." As the largest Magnepan dealer in the United States, The Listening Room builds every 2.7i to order in your choice of finish, and when Magnepan has your fabric and trim combination on hand, it ships quickly.

Key Features of the Magnepan 2.7i

  • 40-Inch True Ribbon Tweeter: Pure aluminum foil suspended freely with no substrate, the lowest-mass driver in the design, for fast, airy, low-distortion highs.
  • Three-Way Full-Range Planar: Separate bass, midrange, and true-ribbon tweeter sections, each a thin dipole panel rather than a cone, with no woofer in a box.
  • Quasi-Ribbon Bass and Midrange: Aluminum foil bonded to a Mylar diaphragm, the "quasi-ribbon" surface visible through the front of the grille cloth.
  • Dipole Planar Design: Radiates from both the front and back of the panel, the trait behind Magnepan's open, room-filling soundstage.
  • Tall, Slim Panel: 71 inches tall and just under 2 inches deep, a full-size planar that still tucks close to the wall when it has to.
  • Made in the USA: Hand-built at Magnepan's factory in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
  • 24 Finish Combinations: Four grille fabrics and six trim options, so the panel matches the room rather than fighting it.

How the Magnepan 2.7i Makes Its Sound

The Magnepan 2.7i is a three-way dipole rated at 4 ohms and 86dB sensitivity (2.83V). The bass and midrange are quasi-ribbon panels, aluminum foil adhered to a Mylar diaphragm, while the tweeter is a true ribbon: a strip of aluminum foil suspended freely with no substrate behind it, so the conductor itself is the diaphragm. That lower mass is why the true ribbon sounds quicker and more delicate than the quasi-ribbon super-tweeter on the 1.7i. All three sections radiate front and back as a dipole, for low stored energy and the open, unboxed sound Magnepan is known for. Like every Magnepan, the 2.7i rewards a strong, current-capable amplifier.

What the 2.7i's Bigger Panel and True Ribbon Deliver

Stepping up to the 2.7i is about what the larger panel and the true ribbon give you, not a room measurement. More radiating area means a bigger, more effortless soundstage and more output before the panel works hard, so the music fills the space with ease. The 40-inch true ribbon tweeter adds faster, airier, lower-distortion highs on top of that bigger foundation. Choose the 2.7i when you want more of everything a Magnepan panel does. Like any dipole it rewards a little space behind it to open up, but that is a setup detail to dial in, not a limit on who it is for.

How Much Bass Does the Magnepan 2.7i Have?

The Magnepan 2.7i reaches down to 40Hz from its panel, with the speed and coherence that come from making bass on the same kind of thin diaphragm as the mids and highs. Like any panel, it stays lean in the lowest octave rather than thumping, so for a larger room or for full weight under organ, synth, and film, a fast, articulate subwoofer fills in the bottom without dragging on the panel's speed. We most often pair Magnepan with REL and Perlisten subwoofers, since both blend cleanly with a planar rather than fighting it.

Fabric and Trim Options for the Magnepan 2.7i

The Magnepan 2.7i is built to order in four grille fabrics (Black, Off-White, Cherry White, and Gray) and six side-trim finishes (Natural Oak, Black Oak, Dark Cherry, Black Aluminum, Silver Aluminum, and Gold Aluminum). That gives 24 combinations, from an all-black panel that hides in a media wall to natural oak rails that warm up a living space. Fabric and trim are a cosmetic choice and do not change the sound. Each pair ships on Magnepan's standard T-feet, with optional oval bases available.

Where the 2.7i fits in the Magnepan line

How the 2.7i compares to the rest of the range, and what each step up or down the line changes.

$2,995 / pair
A three-way panel with a quasi-ribbon super-tweeter and more area than the .7. 40 Hz to 24 kHz, but still all quasi-ribbon, no true ribbon yet. The value sweet spot just below the true-ribbon models.

$6,495 / pair
The first step up to a 40-inch true ribbon tweeter, over quasi-ribbon bass and midrange. 40 Hz to 30 kHz, about 71 inches tall. Faster, airier highs than the 1.7i.
Magnepan 2.7x Mike's pick
$10,000 / pair
The 2.7 panel with Magnepan's X-Series parts upgrade: capacitors, coils, resistors, and wiring replaced, circuitry simplified, tolerances tightened. Sharper imaging and a more natural sound, same panel and footprint.
$9,495 / pair
A larger 60.6-inch true ribbon tweeter, with the midrange and bass on separate diaphragms for less crosstalk, plus more panel area. 35 Hz to 40 kHz. The most resolution and scale among the i-series.
$22,995 / pair
Magnepan's big push-pull panel, one step below the 30.7 flagship: a true ribbon with magnets on both sides of the bass and midrange for more output and lower distortion, on a much larger surface. A major step up in scale.
Mike's Take
This is where you get your first true ribbon tweeter. A quasi-ribbon is aluminum foil glued to Mylar; a true ribbon is pure aluminum suspended with no backing, so there is no excess mass and the conductor itself is the diaphragm. The 2.7i uses a 40-inch ribbon, and it is a real upgrade in clarity, speed, and delicacy.
