Acoustic Energy Speakers Explained: AE300², AE309², AE1 40th Anniversary, AE Active, and Corinium

Most speaker companies start with a sound they want and then find out what it costs. Acoustic Energy works the other way around. They pick the price a speaker has to sell for, and then they engineer everything themselves, cabinet, drivers, crossover, until it's the best thing they can build at that number. It's why a $1,199 pair of AE300² bookshelf speakers gets the same cabinet construction as a $7,999 flagship, and why that flagship, the Corinium, keeps getting compared to speakers that cost a great deal more. This is the whole Acoustic Energy line as we sell it, from the AE300² through the AE1 40th Anniversary, the AE Active, and the Corinium, and what's going on inside each one.

Why an Acoustic Energy speaker costs what it costs

Acoustic Energy has been building speakers in England since 1987. The first product was the AE1, a compact monitor with an aluminum cone and a cabinet lined with latex-based concrete, which is not something anyone else was doing at the time. The company moved from London to the Cotswolds, near Cirencester, and in 2017 four of its managers bought the business back. Mat Spandl, the managing director at Acoustic Energy, is also the designer. That matters more than it sounds. When the person who runs the company is the person drawing the drivers, the engineering doesn't get outvoted by the marketing department.

It's easy to make a great sounding speaker when money is no object. Acoustic Energy works from the other end: pick the price the speaker has to hit, then work out how to build the best thing that fits inside it. That's the whole brief, and it's a harder one than it sounds.

The way they do that is control. Nothing in an Acoustic Energy speaker comes off a shelf. Every driver is unique to Acoustic Energy, and unique to the particular line it sits in. When you design the cone shape, the motor, the crossover, and the cabinet together, you can spend the money where it changes what you hear and skip the parts that only change the brochure. The result is a catalog where the top speaker is $7,999 a pair in standard finishes, and the entry into the current line is $1,199. None of it is exotic money. All of it sounds like it should cost more.

The cabinet is the story

If you take one thing from this article, make it the cabinet. Every current Acoustic Energy speaker we carry, from the AE300² up to the Corinium, uses what they call RSC, Resonance Suppression Composite. It's a constrained-layer construction: a sheet of bitumen damping material sandwiched between layers of MDF, so the panel is heavy and dead without being thick. Think of the sound-deadening mat people bolt inside car doors, built into the walls of the speaker.

Here's why that matters in the room. A speaker cabinet is a box with a driver pumping air inside it, and every panel wants to vibrate along with the music. When it does, you hear the box as well as the driver, a smearing on vocals and a boxy thickness in the upper bass. The usual fix is thicker walls and more bracing, which costs internal volume and adds weight. RSC gets the panel quiet without the bulk, so a slim cabinet can behave like a much bigger, heavier one. What you hear is a cleaner midrange and bass that stops when the note stops.

Acoustic Energy pioneered this in its Reference series about fifteen years ago, used it in the Corinium and the 500 Series, and with the new 300 Series brought it down to $1,199 for the first time. The AE1 40th Anniversary uses it too, in place of the concrete lining of the original. Same idea as 1987, better execution.

Three cones for three jobs

Acoustic Energy doesn't use one driver recipe across the range. Each line gets the cone material that suits what it's for, and the tweeter is matched to the woofer rather than shared.

The previous 300 Series used aluminum cones. They had punch, but a metal cone carries weight, and weight costs sensitivity. The new mid/bass driver is a paper cone reinforced with coconut fiber, and the point of it is a smooth, natural midrange that keeps the pace of the old metal driver without the ring. The motor gets an extended copper pole shield to lower midrange distortion. That one driver is used across the whole 300 Series, so the bookshelf and the floorstanders share a voice.

Spun aluminum in the AE1 40th Anniversary and AE Active

The AE1 was always an aluminum-cone speaker, so the anniversary edition stays aluminum. The cone is spun over a mold rather than pressed, which keeps the thickness even across the whole cone, and then hard-anodized with a ceramic layer on both sides. Spinning is a much more accurate way to make an aluminum driver than stamping one. The finished cone behaves like a pure piston, moving as one piece instead of flexing, which is where the AE1's famous punch comes from.

Carbon fiber in the Corinium

At the top of the line, the Corinium moves to carbon fiber for both the 120mm midrange and the two 140mm bass drivers. Carbon gives them stiffness at very low mass, and in the midrange that translates into the tonal accuracy the Corinium was built around. Its tweeter is a soft dome made from a material Acoustic Energy sourced specifically because it's lighter than the carbon fiber dome they used on the 500 Series. A variant of that tweeter, matched to the paper cone instead of carbon, is what you get in the 300 Series.

Two more details run through the whole range. The crossovers use air-core inductors rather than iron-core, which cost more but keep the top end open and the soundstage airy. And there's one set of binding posts on every model, Corinium included. Acoustic Energy doesn't offer bi-wiring on purpose. Their view is that a single, properly designed crossover with one good set of speaker cables gives you the same result every time, and we agree with them.

What does the AE300² do that a $1,199 bookshelf usually doesn't?

It plays bass that doesn't sound like it's coming from a box this size. Mike's take on the AE300²: "At this price point, this is a very refined bookshelf speaker with jaw on the floor bass response for its size."

The AE300² is the standmount in the redesigned 300 Series, and nothing on it carries over from the previous model. New 120mm paper and coconut-fiber driver, new 29mm soft-dome tweeter derived from the Corinium, new 18mm RSC cabinet, and a slot-shaped port on the back that's been shaped to keep the airflow clean at volume. It's rated 42Hz to 29kHz at 86dB sensitivity into 6 ohms, and it weighs 7kg each, which is heavy for a cabinet that's only 170mm wide. That weight is the RSC doing its job. What Hi-Fi? named it Best Standmount Loudspeaker in the £500 to £1,000 class in its 2025 Awards, and Hi-Fi Choice gave it a Product of the Year.

The tweeter deserves a word. It sits in Acoustic Energy's Wide Dispersion Technology waveguide, the WDT you'll see on the spec sheets. Every tweeter beams as the frequency rises, meaning the treble narrows into a cone straight in front of the driver. If you sit alone in the sweet spot that's fine, but with two or three people on a couch the listeners at the ends lose the top end. AE spent real effort on the waveguide profile to keep the treble wide as it beams, so the sweet spot is broad instead of a single seat. You notice it as an even, open sound from more places in the room.

The AE309² uses that driver set in a slim 2.5-way floorstander, with a second 120mm driver handling bass only, taking the extension down to 33Hz and sensitivity up to 89dB. It comes with aluminum outrigger feet and spike covers. If you've never heard an Acoustic Energy speaker, this is the one to hear first, and it's the pair we'd suggest starting with: floorstanding, full range, and it gives you the whole character of the brand in one box. The AE320² is the larger 3-way, with the mid/bass driver over two 140mm bass drivers set low in the cabinet. Placing the bass drivers near the floor picks up a few decibels of reinforcement from the boundary, the effect you get from putting a speaker near a wall, and the AE320² uses it deliberately. It reaches 30Hz at 92dB sensitivity, which makes it the easiest speaker in the series to drive.

Is the AE1 40th Anniversary a reissue or a new speaker?

It's a new speaker built to sound like the old one, which is harder than either. Every part of the 1987 AE1 has been out of production for years, so Acoustic Energy had to redesign the tweeter, the woofer, the ports, and the cabinet from scratch and then tune all of it back to the original's sound. Their own description of the approach is that they smoothed off some of the rougher edges with a very light touch.

The AE1 40th Anniversary Edition keeps the defining elements: a high-mass, straight-sided aluminum cone driven by a powerful motor, a small, heavy cabinet with twin front ports, and a metal-dome tweeter. The woofer grows slightly to a modern 125mm standard, which buys a little more efficiency and more air moved. The tweeter gets a larger 29mm voice coil and a slightly larger aluminum dome, lowering distortion through a bigger radiating area, and like the original it's ferrofluid cooled and damped.

The modernizations are the parts you'd want. An aluminum shorting ring in the motor cuts the distortion that comes from the voice coil's inductance changing as it moves. The woofer was designed around a 5-ohm DC resistance instead of the original's 7 ohms, which is a big part of why the original earned a reputation for needing serious amplification. The new one is easier to drive. And the twin front ports were re-tooled with an internal flare to lower port noise and let a bit more bass through.

The cabinet is where the anniversary edition quietly improves on the legend. The original's concrete lining was a production headache. The new one uses RSC and stiffer walls to capture the same sound without the drawbacks, then gets ten coats of high-gloss black or a walnut veneer, magnetic grilles with no visible fixings, and gold hardware. Rated 50Hz to 45kHz at 87dB into 6 ohms, 7kg each. The crossover borrows from the original AE1 Signature: low-order filters and good parts, voiced this time for a living room rather than a studio, so the midrange is warm and the top end is forgiving. This is a genuine piece of British hi-fi history. It's also the smallest speaker in this article, so if you play it loud, give it an amplifier with real current behind it.

An AE2 40th Anniversary Edition follows in October 2026, using the same drivers with a second 125mm woofer in a larger, triple-ported cabinet lined with steel plates. It extends to 35Hz where the AE1 stops at 50Hz. The AE1 was built to run full range on its own, and a lot of American listeners will be perfectly happy with it that way. If you want the same voice with more weight underneath, that's what the AE2 is for.

The AE Active is a powered speaker with no app

Most powered speakers today are trying to be the whole system: streaming, Bluetooth, HDMI, an app, and an amplifier tucked in somewhere behind all of it. The AE Active is the opposite. It's the AE1 40th Anniversary's woofer and a 27mm aluminum-dome tweeter with a pair of amplifiers built in, and nothing else.

Each speaker carries two 50-watt Class A/B amplifiers on a linear power supply, one for the tweeter and one for the woofer, with an analog line-level crossover between them. Class A/B on a linear supply is rare in a powered speaker, where the norm is a compact Class D module on a switching supply. The signal path is fully analog, no DSP, no digital stage. Inputs are balanced XLR and RCA. There are shelf controls for bass and treble, plus or minus 2dB each, and the update adds the auto on/off owners of the original AE1 Active kept asking for.

Mike's take: "These are a modernization and refinement of the classic AE1 Active bookshelf. Use these with a streamer with a built-in volume control, and you can have a very robust, simple system."

That's the use case in one line. Take a streamer or DAC with its own volume control, run a pair of cables to the AE Actives, and you're done. No integrated amplifier, no separate power amp, and a better set of drivers and a better cabinet than a powered speaker usually gets. The honest description is blunt: these are not self-contained units. They're powered speakers that still need a preamplifier in front of them, and what you get in exchange is much better amplification, drivers and cabinets than most powered speakers give you. It's the right answer for a desk system, a second system, or anyone who wants a serious pair of speakers without a rack of boxes. It is not a replacement for separates, and Acoustic Energy isn't pretending it is.

How far does the Corinium take the same ideas?

All the way. The Corinium is what happens when the same team starts with a blank sheet, spends three years on it, and sets the price at $7,999 instead of $1,199. Mike's take: "Truly flagship performance at a relatively reasonable price point. These have a control to the bass that is class leading at this price point."

It's a three-way. The 120mm carbon-fiber midrange covers five octaves on its own, which is most of where the music lives, and hands off to the tweeter at 3,400Hz and to the pair of 140mm carbon-fiber bass drivers at 260Hz. The cabinet is the RSC construction again, but curved, and the walls vary from 22mm to 50mm thick depending on where the resonance would otherwise be. The whole enclosure tilts back four degrees to time-align the drivers at the listening seat, and the front baffle is a 6mm slab of aluminum that anchors the drivers and isolates them from what little the cabinet still does. Each one weighs 40kg.

The bass system is the part Mike keeps coming back to. Acoustic Energy went back to first principles on the alignment and aimed for the control of a sealed box with the depth of a ported one, and the spec says 32Hz to 30kHz at a healthy 92dB sensitivity into 4 ohms. What that means in practice is that a good 100-watt integrated will drive it properly, and the bass stays tight at volumes where a lot of floorstanders start to bloom. Hi-Fi News gave it a Highly Commended badge, with reviewer Mark Craven writing that "the Corinium is seemingly focused on delivering natural, revealing mid-tones. The quality of its vocal and instrumental reproduction is a standout trait." The Absolute Sound gave it an Editor's Choice Award, and Hi-Fi+ named it Best Floorstanding Loudspeaker over £5k. Finishes are British Racing Green, Matte Black, Matte White, Tectona, and Midnight Silver.

The Corinium is a big enough step up that the question of what comes after it inside the Acoustic Energy range doesn't come up. If you've been looking at floorstanders in the five-figure range and keep landing on the same short list, this belongs on it.

If you'd rather skip the stands and have bass that reaches the floor, the AE309² is the pick, and it's the one to buy if you want to find out what the brand sounds like. The AE320² is for people who listen loud, or who run a modest amplifier and want the 92dB sensitivity. The AE1 40th Anniversary is a different animal: an aluminum-cone monitor with a history, for someone who wants that specific punch and knows the name. The AE Active is for the streamer-and-speakers system with nothing else in the chain. And the Corinium is the one you buy when you've decided to stop shopping.
