Description

The Acoustic Energy AE Active is a fully active, two-way standmount speaker with its amplification built in, so it plays straight from a streamer, DAC, or preamp with no separate power amp in the chain. Each cabinet runs a pair of 50-watt Class A/B amplifiers, one for the bass-mid driver and one for the tweeter, giving each driver a level of control most passive speakers never get.

Key Features of the AE Active Speakers
  • Bi-Amped Class A/B Power: Two 50W Class A/B amplifiers per speaker, one for the bass-mid driver and one for the tweeter, fed by a linear power supply.
  • Pure-Piston Driver: 125mm ceramic and aluminium cone, the design first developed for the AE1 40th Anniversary, built to resist cone flex and distortion.
  • WDT Tweeter: 27mm aluminium dome in a Wide Dispersion Technology waveguide for a wide, stable stereo image.
  • Fully Analogue Signal Path: No DSP and no digital processing anywhere between the input and the drivers.
  • Balanced and Single-Ended Inputs: Both XLR and RCA on board, so it connects to almost any source.
  • Tone Controls: Independent bass and treble shelving (+/- 2dB) to tune for your room and placement.
  • Auto On/Off: New standby switching that wakes the speakers on signal and powers them down after 15 minutes of silence.
  • 18mm MDF Cabinet: Reshaped enclosure with a new silicone-finished trim ring around each driver.
  • Three Finishes: High-gloss black, high-gloss white, and natural walnut wood veneer.
AE Active Power: Bi-Amped Class A/B, No Separate Amp Required

The AE Active carries its own amplification, so the only thing it needs from the rest of your system is a line-level signal. Each speaker houses two 50-watt Class A/B amplifiers fed by a linear power supply, one driving the bass-mid unit and one driving the tweeter. Splitting amplification this way, known as active bi-amping, gives each driver its own dedicated power and removes the passive crossover that normally sits between the amplifier and the drivers. The result is tighter driver control and consistent, low-noise output across the range.

The Pure-Piston Ceramic Aluminium Cone
Acoustic Energy AE Active drivers, pure-piston cone and WDT tweeter, grilles removed

Inside each cabinet is Acoustic Energy's signature pure-piston cone, a 125mm ceramic and aluminium driver first developed for the AE1 40th Anniversary and carried into the AE Active. The cone is engineered to move as a true piston, which minimizes the flex and break-up that soften the sound of lesser cone materials. That keeps low-frequency grip and detail clean as the volume climbs.

Aluminium Dome Tweeter with Wide Dispersion Technology

High frequencies come from a 27mm aluminium dome tweeter set in Acoustic Energy's Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide. The waveguide widens and controls how treble spreads into the room, so the stereo image stays wide and stable across a larger listening area instead of collapsing to a single sweet spot. The two drivers meet at a 3.1kHz second-order crossover.

A Fully Analogue Signal Path

Acoustic Energy kept the AE Active entirely analogue. There is no DSP and no digital processing between the input and the drivers. For listeners who want their source and their room sitting between the recording and the speaker, not a layer of software, the all-analogue path keeps the signal as direct as an active design allows.

Inputs, Tone Controls, and Auto On/Off

Both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs are on board, so the AE Active connects cleanly to a DAC, preamp, or streamer with a volume output. Independent bass and treble shelving filters (each +/- 2dB) let you compensate for stand height, wall proximity, and room reflections without any external EQ. New for this model is an auto on/off circuit, long requested by AE1 Active owners: the speakers wake on signal and return to standby after about 15 minutes of silence.

Refined Cabinet and Three Finishes

The 18mm MDF cabinet has been subtly reshaped, with a new silicone-finished trim ring around each driver for a cleaner look up close. Slim magnetic cloth grilles sit flush when you want them and pull away without leaving posts on the baffle. Three finishes are offered: high-gloss black, high-gloss white, and a natural walnut wood veneer.

More from Acoustic Energy

The AE Active is Acoustic Energy's active standmount, sharing its new pure-piston cone with the rest of the current AE1 family.

  • AE1 40th Anniversary Edition - the passive version of the same standmount platform, for systems with a separate amplifier.
  • Acoustic Energy Speaker Stands - matching stands built for AE standmounts. For walnut speakers we suggest the stands in high-gloss black, since the wood finishes are not a match.

FAQ

Do I need a separate amplifier for the Acoustic Energy AE Active?

No. The AE Active is a fully active speaker with amplification built into each cabinet: two 50-watt Class A/B amplifiers per speaker, one for the bass-mid driver and one for the tweeter. You connect a source with a volume-controlled output, such as a streamer, DAC, or preamp, directly to the speakers using the balanced XLR or RCA inputs. No separate power amplifier is needed.

What is the difference between the AE Active and the AE1 Active it replaces?

The AE Active is the evolution of the award-winning AE1 Active. It uses the upgraded pure-piston ceramic and aluminium cone first developed for the AE1 40th Anniversary, a subtly reshaped cabinet with a new silicone-finished driver trim, and adds an auto on/off circuit that AE1 Active owners had requested. Both are fully analogue, bi-amped two-way standmounts with dual 50-watt Class A/B amplification and balanced XLR plus RCA inputs.

Will the Acoustic Energy AE Active work with US power?

Yes. The AE Active uses manual voltage switching, so each speaker can be set for US 110 to 120-volt power. It connects using a standard IEC C13 power cable.

How do I connect a turntable to the AE Active?

The AE Active has line-level balanced XLR and RCA inputs but no built-in phono stage. To use a turntable, run it through a phono preamp first, then connect that phono stage to the AE Active's RCA or XLR input. A turntable with a built-in phono preamp can connect directly to the RCA inputs.
