Description
Description
The Rega Planar 6 RS AFC is a Planar 6 RS Edition that arrives with the Ania moving coil cartridge factory fitted and the Fono MC MK4 phono stage in the box, for the same price Rega asks for the RS with its Nd9 moving magnet. Deck, arm, cartridge and phono stage were built and matched by the same people in Southend-on-Sea.
Pre-Order Now. Shipping estimated September 2026.
Key Features of the Rega Planar 6 RS AFC
- Ania Moving Coil Cartridge, Factory Fitted: hand-wound miniature coil assembly, elliptical stylus, 350 µV nominal output, mounted and aligned on the RB880 at the Rega factory
- Fono MC MK4 Phono Stage Included: a dedicated moving coil stage that ships set to 100 Ω and 1000 pF, the factory setting for every Rega MC cartridge
- RB880 Tonearm: hand-selected bearings matched to tolerances under one thousandth of a millimeter, the same arm Rega fits to the Planar 8
- CNC Twin Drive Pulley: two Rega Reference EBLT drive belts turning the sub-platter together
- Tancast 8 Foam Core Plinth: aerospace polyurethane foam under an aluminum metal skin high-pressure laminate
- 16mm Dual-Layer Opti-white Float Glass Platter: low-iron glass, optically clearer than standard float glass
- Neo MK2 Power Supply: electronic switching between 33 1/3 and 45 RPM with 0.01 RPM adjustment
- Double Brace Technology: a stressed beam assembly tying the tonearm mount to the main hub bearing
- Smoked Dustcover: supplied as standard
What Comes in the Box
Three boxes, one purchase: the Planar 6 RS Edition deck with the Ania already mounted and aligned, the Neo MK2 power supply Rega hand-tunes to the deck's 24V motor, and the Fono MC MK4 phono stage. The Ania replaces the Nd9 moving magnet the standard RS Edition ships with, so there is no Nd9 in this configuration. Rega calls it the AFC, short for Ania Fono Combination.
Moving coil cartridges put out a fraction of the voltage a moving magnet does, so the phono stage that worked with your last cartridge almost certainly will not work with this one. Rega closed that gap by putting the right phono stage in the box and pricing the whole thing where the moving magnet version sits.
The RB880 Tonearm: Planar 8 Bearings on a Planar 6
The RB880 is the arm Rega fits to the Planar 8, and it is the biggest structural upgrade over a standard Planar 6 and its RB330. Every vertical bearing is hand-selected and matched to tolerances under one thousandth of a millimeter, leaving no perceptible play, and a custom stainless steel balance weight sets tracking force. That matters more here than on the moving magnet version: a low-output moving coil only returns what a quiet, low-friction arm lets it.
The Ania Moving Coil Cartridge, Factory Fitted and Aligned
The Ania is Rega's entry point into moving coil, built by hand in Rega's own cartridge facility and derived from the Apheta and Aphelion designs above it. It uses a hand-wound miniature coil assembly and a neodymium magnet, puts out 350 µV, and tracks at 1.75 to 2.00 grams. The generator is built for low moving mass, which is the whole argument for moving coil: less mass on the cantilever means the stylus changes direction faster and follows the groove wall more closely. The elliptical stylus sits in a rigid glass-filled PPS body whose three-point fixing bolts straight to a Rega arm, and the alignment is set at the factory.
Fono MC MK4: Gain and Loading Already Set for the Ania
The Fono MC MK4 is a dedicated moving coil phono stage, and it leaves the factory configured for Rega's own MC cartridges: 100 Ω input loading, 1000 pF capacitance, high gain. Plug the AFC in and the electrical match is already correct. Frequency response runs 13 Hz to 100 kHz and RIAA accuracy is better than ±0.2 dB from 100 Hz to 100 kHz.
The all-discrete input stage is built around a Linear Systems LSK389 FET, chosen for low noise and a high input impedance that keeps the circuit from loading the cartridge down, feeding a two-stage RIAA circuit with a MUSE operational amplifier and polypropylene capacitors. Rear-panel DIP switches cover gain (63.5 or 69.5 dB at 1 kHz), loading resistance (70, 100, 150 or 400 Ω) and capacitance (1000 or 4300 pF), so the stage has somewhere to go if a different moving coil cartridge follows the Ania.
Twin Reference EBLT Belts and the CNC Twin Drive Pulley
A standard Planar 6 runs one EBLT belt. The RS runs two Rega Reference EBLT belts off a CNC-machined twin drive pulley, both turning the aluminum sub-platter at once. A single belt introduces small cyclical variations as it stretches and relaxes through each rotation, and those land in the music as pitch instability; two share the load. Behind the pulley sits a hand-tuned 24V low-noise synchronous motor, matched at the factory to its own Neo MK2 supply.
Tancast 8 Plinth and Double Brace Technology
Rega treats mass as the enemy, because mass stores energy and gives it back late as distortion. The plinth is a Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core developed for aerospace work, sandwiched between high-pressure laminate and finished with an aluminum metal skin; the finished deck weighs 5.4 kg. Double Brace Technology reinforces the one span that changes the outcome, tonearm mount to main hub bearing, holding the relationship between stylus and record fixed.
Neo MK2 Power Supply and Matched Rega Casework
Every Planar 6 RS AFC ships with the Neo MK2 power supply, switching speed electronically between 33 1/3 and 45 RPM in 0.01 RPM steps. Keeping it in its own chassis moves the transformer away from the cartridge, where stray fields would otherwise sit inches from a coil generating 350 microvolts. The Fono MC MK4 wears the same machined aluminum case, so the two stack or sit side by side as a matched pair.
The 16mm Dual-Layer Opti-white Glass Platter
The platter is 16mm of dual-layer float glass in Opti-white, a low-iron formulation optically clearer than standard glass. Decoupling matters more here than on a moving magnet deck: the Ania generates roughly a fifteenth of the Nd9's output, so anything mechanical that reaches the stylus arrives proportionally louder against the signal.

The decks around it, in price order, and what each one adds.
The RS Edition and the RS AFC are the same turntable. The only question is which cartridge is on the arm and whether the phono stage comes with it. Browse the full Rega turntable range, or read up on the Ania cartridge on its own page.
