Description

The Primare 928 Special Edition Preamplifier is a fully balanced analog preamplifier built to mark Primare's 40th anniversary. It carries a moving-magnet and moving-coil phono stage, a built-in headphone amplifier, and a new analog signal loop that lets you patch DSP into an otherwise all-analog chain. The wedge chassis is the same shape Primare introduced on the original 928 in 1986.

Key Features of the Primare 928 Special Edition Preamplifier
  • Fully balanced analog preamplifier, built for the 40th-anniversary 928 series
  • Moving-magnet and moving-coil phono stage on board
  • Built-in headphone amplifier, with the jack on the rear by design
  • Analog signal loop for inserting DSP into an all-analog system
  • Porsche 928-inspired wedge chassis for internal isolation and short signal paths
  • Black finish
Four Decades, One Design

The 928 was the first product Primare ever built. As Terry Medalen of Primare puts it: "What it's based on is the first product that we produced. That line of products was called the 928. It was named in honor of Porsche's car that had just come out, that the industrial designer Bo Christensen, who originated the company, was enamored with."

Why the Wedge

The slanted profile is not styling for its own sake. The wedge shape lets Primare integrate and isolate the circuitry inside the chassis while keeping signal paths short, the same engineering logic that shaped the original 928.

A Phono Stage and Headphone Amp, Built In

Like the original, this is a fully balanced analog preamplifier with both moving-magnet and moving-coil phono stages and a headphone amplifier on board. The headphone jack sits on the rear panel, a deliberate carryover from the original designer's view that a front-panel jack spoiled the clean fascia.

The Signal Loop

The one genuinely new addition is an analog signal loop, conceived like an old tape loop. It gives listeners who want it the capacity to add DSP control into an otherwise all-analog system.

More in the Primare 928 Special Edition Series

The 928 Special Edition is a full separates system. Pair this preamplifier with the 928 Special Edition Stereo Amplifier, or step up to a pair of 928 Special Edition Monoblock Amplifiers.
