The Diptyque DP170-EVO sits at the top of Diptyque's standard range of French planar-magnetic loudspeakers, a full three-way panel positioned just below the cost-no-object Reference. It pairs two push-pull bipolar bass and midrange cells, with 3,510 square centimeters of radiating area, with a 90-centimeter isodynamic ribbon for the midrange and treble. From a panel just 400 mm deep it reaches from 28 Hz to 40 kHz.

It borrows the mechanical sandwich cabinet structure of the flagship Reference, bringing much of that statement loudspeaker's rigidity and quiet to a more practical floorstanding panel. Only the cost-no-object Reference sits above it.

A True Three-Way Planar

Where most planar loudspeakers split the range in two, the DP170-EVO is a genuine three-way. Two push-pull bipolar (PPBM) cells handle the bass and midrange across 3,510 square centimeters of radiating area, holding the diaphragm between matched magnetic fields on both sides for control and low-frequency authority. A dedicated 90-centimeter isodynamic ribbon, driven by neodymium magnets, carries the midrange and treble out to 40 kHz, for the speed and air that ribbon drivers are prized for.

The Sandwich Cabinet

Diptyque builds the DP170-EVO around the same sandwich mechanical structure developed for the Reference. The layered, bonded construction stiffens the frame and damps resonance, so the energy you hear comes from the planar diaphragms rather than the cabinet around them.

The DP170-EVO is offered in standard sandblasted Black 2100 and White 9010, in a premium leather wrap in white, caramel, chocolate, or black, and in any of 160 custom RAL colors to match a room.

What Does the EVO Acoustic Bass Regulator Do?

The EVO series adds acoustic bass regulation: a series of calibrated perforations on the rear face of the panels that act as progressive dampers on the Mylar membrane at its resonant frequency. The result is a more linear response in the low frequencies and measurably less distortion at high volume.

It came out of a 2025 collaboration with the ONERA acoustic aerospace laboratory in Toulouse, using their anechoic chamber and laser vibrometers to measure how the diaphragms behave. The answer is mechanical, not electronic, so nothing in the signal path changes.

How PPBM Controls the Diaphragm

PPBM, or Push Pull Bipolar Magnet, is Diptyque’s patented driver architecture. Custom large-section bipolar magnets sit at both the front and the rear of the diaphragm, holding the aluminium ribbon voice coil in a constant magnetic field. The diaphragm is controlled from both sides rather than pulled from one.

That control is what gives the bass its shape and lets transients start and stop cleanly. The midrange and treble come from a separate 90 cm isodynamic ribbon assembly built the same way, Mylar film with aluminium winding moving in an intense neodymium field, and joined to the bass cells through a simple 12 dB per octave filter so the registers blend without a complicated crossover in the way.

Why an Isodynamic Panel Sounds Different

An isodynamic panel radiates over a large surface as a plane wave, so the sound arrives without the projected, point-source quality of a conventional box. It works as a dipole, radiating from both faces, which is what builds the sense of space around the performers.

The same extremely thin Mylar membrane carries everything from bass to treble, so the whole spectrum behaves with one dynamic character. There is no driver firing into a cabinet behind the panel, so there is no box coloration to hear through. The impedance stays regular, which makes the DP170-EVO an undemanding load. And with no high-voltage circuit, the panels are untroubled by dust or humidity over time.

How the Panel Is Built

The structure is modular: an MDF frame, an ultra-rigid HPL composite diaphragm chassis, and 2 mm steel sheets drawn tightly together with a large number of mechanical screws. The assembly is rigid and non-resonant, which is what keeps coloration out and the tonal balance honest.

It also comes apart. The same construction that makes the panel rigid lets the speakers be disassembled for diaphragm replacement, which few loudspeakers at any price allow.
