Description
The Rega Planar 6 RS Edition takes the already capable Planar 6 platform and loads it with components pulled straight from the Planar 8. The RB880 tonearm, the Nd9 reference cartridge, a CNC twin drive pulley with dual Reference EBLT belts. Hand-assembled in Southend-on-Sea, England, this is the Planar 6 built the way Rega's engineers always wanted it.
Key Features of the Rega Planar 6 RS Edition
- RB880 Tonearm with hand-selected ultra-low friction bearings matched to micron tolerances, normally found only on the Planar 8
- Nd9 Reference Moving Magnet Cartridge factory-fitted and aligned, featuring a boron cantilever and fine-line nude diamond stylus
- CNC Twin Drive Pulley paired with two Rega Reference EBLT drive belts for improved speed accuracy and reduced wow and flutter
- Tancast 8 Foam Core Plinth with aluminum metal skin HP laminate, creating an ultra-light, resonance-free platform
- Dual-Layer Opti-White Float Glass Platter for superior isolation and visual clarity
- Neo MK2 Power Supply with electronic speed switching and 0.01 RPM precision adjustment
- Double Brace Technology for structural rigidity between the tonearm mount and main hub bearing
- 24V Low-Noise Motor hand-tuned for quiet operation
- Smoked Dustcover supplied as standard
- Pre-Order Available with US delivery expected early summer 2026
The RB880 Tonearm: Precision from the Planar 8
The biggest upgrade on the RS Edition is the tonearm. The standard Planar 6 ships with the RB330. The RS gets the RB880, the same arm fitted to the Planar 8. That's not a cosmetic swap. The RB880 uses a redesigned aluminum vertical bearing housing with new stainless steel sleeve and bearing shaft components. Every bearing is hand-selected and matched to tolerances under one thousandth of a millimeter. The result is zero perceptible play, lower friction, and an arm that follows groove modulations with the kind of accuracy that shows up as better imaging and a quieter mechanical background.
The low-mass aluminum tube redistributes weight intelligently, and the factory-fitted low-capacitance phono cable uses Rega's proprietary twist-and-clamp connectors. Nearly 40 years of Rega tonearm engineering is packed into this arm, and it makes the Planar 6 RS play well above its price class.
The Nd9 Reference Cartridge
Rega's highest-performing moving magnet cartridge comes factory-fitted and precisely aligned on the RS Edition. The Nd9 uses a boron cantilever (stiffer and lighter than aluminum) bonded to a fine-line nude diamond stylus with exceptionally small contact radii of 3 and 30 microns. This profile tracks the groove wall with surgical precision, pulling detail from records that lesser cartridges simply miss.
Inside, miniaturized parallel coils wound with 38-micron wire (1,275 turns) sit alongside neodymium N55 magnets, the most powerful commercially available. The lightweight PPS body keeps moving mass low, and the optimized pole gap delivers superior linearity and crosstalk separation. If you've been running an Nd5 and wondering what the next step sounds like, this is it. The difference between the Nd9 and everything below it in Rega's lineup shows up most clearly through a capable phono stage.
Rega Planar 6 RS Edition Twin-Belt Drive System
The standard Planar 6 runs a single EBLT belt. The RS Edition upgrades to a CNC-machined twin drive pulley running two Rega Reference EBLT drive belts simultaneously. The twin-belt configuration distributes drive force more evenly around the sub-platter, reducing micro-variations in speed that a single belt can introduce. Combined with the hand-tuned 24V low-noise synchronous motor, the drive system delivers the kind of speed stability that lets sustained piano notes hold their pitch and complex orchestral passages stay composed.
Tancast 8 Plinth and Double Brace Technology
Rega's design philosophy treats mass as the enemy of accurate playback. Mass stores energy and releases it as distortion. The Planar 6 RS uses a Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core (developed for aerospace applications) sandwiched between high-pressure laminate and an aluminum metal skin with matching edging for a seamless finish. The result is a plinth that weighs almost nothing but resists flexing and resonance with a rigidity that heavier designs struggle to match.
Double Brace Technology adds targeted reinforcement exactly where it matters: between the tonearm mounting point and the main hub bearing. This creates a structurally sound stressed beam assembly that keeps the critical mechanical relationship between tonearm and platter locked in place. The brushed aluminum finish gives the RS Edition a look that's distinctly different from the standard Planar 6's matte laminate, and it feels like a more substantial piece of equipment despite weighing less than many competitors.
Rega Planar 6 RS Edition Neo MK2 Power Supply
Every Planar 6 RS Edition ships with the Neo MK2 power supply, Rega's dedicated external PSU. It handles electronic speed switching between 33 1/3 and 45 RPM and offers fine adjustment in 0.01 RPM increments for dialing in exact speed. Keeping the power supply external and away from the turntable reduces electromagnetic interference near the cartridge. The Neo MK2 runs at 24V AC with a power consumption of just 7.2W and includes resettable fuse protection.
Dual-Layer Opti-White Glass Platter
The 16mm dual-layer float glass platter uses Opti-white clear glass, a low-iron formulation that's optically clearer than standard glass. Beyond the visual appeal (you can see the Rega logo through the platter), the dual-layer construction provides effective isolation from external vibration while maintaining a neutral, non-resonant surface for the record to sit on. The floating platter design decouples the record from the motor and bearing noise floor, letting the Nd9 cartridge do its job without interference from below.
Explore the Full Rega Turntable Range
The Planar 6 RS Edition sits between the standard Planar 6 and the Planar 8 in Rega's lineup. If you're looking at the standard Planar 6 and wondering how much better it can get without stepping up to the Planar 8's price, the RS Edition answers that question directly. It borrows the Planar 8's tonearm and pairs it with Rega's best moving magnet cartridge, closing much of the performance gap while keeping the Planar 6's proven platform underneath.
