The AVM Evolution MP 5.3 is a streaming media player and CD player with a tube line stage, built around a slot-in CD drive, AVM's X-Stream Engine and ESS 9028 PRO Double-Quad DACs. It feeds your amplifier through RCA and XLR outputs, with HDMI ARC to bring in the TV.
The MP 5.3 and the MP 3.3 are sister models. The MP 5.3 has the tube line stage, and the MP 3.3 operates with transistor technology alone. Both use the same signal processing.
Key Features of the AVM Evolution MP 5.3
- Tube Line Stage: Tubes specially developed for AVM, visible through a tinted glass panel in the lid.
- ESS 9028 PRO Double-Quad DACs: Four D/A converters per channel, processing in parallel.
- X-Stream Engine Streaming: Up to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD256, with Spotify Connect, Qobuz, TIDAL Connect, internet radio, AirPlay 2 and Roon Ready.
- Slot-In CD Drive: Plays CD Audio and CD-R discs to the Red Book standard.
- Analog Volume Control: Outputs switch between fixed and variable level.
- HDMI ARC and Bluetooth 5.0: Bring in TV sound and stream from a phone.
- RCA and XLR Outputs: Line and preamp outputs on RCA, plus an XLR preamp output.
- RC 3 Remote and RC X App: AVM's full-aluminum RC 3 remote is included, and the app adjusts upsampling and filter settings.
The Tube Line Stage in the MP 5.3
AVM says its tubes give the MP 5.3 a warm and musical sound, and you can watch them at work through the lid. The MP 3.3 operates exclusively with transistor technology, which AVM says achieves maximum linearity and clarity.
AVM rates distortion below 0.025% on the MP 5.3, against below 0.001% on the MP 3.3, with a -3 dB frequency response from below 5 Hz to above 100 kHz. Signal-to-noise and channel crosstalk are both rated above 100 dB.

Streaming With the X-Stream Engine
The X-Stream Engine streams up to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD256. It covers Spotify Connect, Qobuz, TIDAL Connect, internet radio and AirPlay 2, and the MP 5.3 is Roon Ready. It connects by LAN or dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz), and Bluetooth 5.0 takes a stream from your phone.
A rear USB port reads hard drives and USB sticks formatted FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS, and plays WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC, ALAC, DSD, Ogg and AIFF files. In the RC X app for iOS and Android you can adjust the upsampling rate and filter characteristics from your listening position.
Slot-In CD Drive and Digital Inputs
Alongside the CD drive, HDMI ARC accepts up to 192 kHz/24-bit, coaxial S/P-DIF up to 192 kHz/24-bit and optical up to 96 kHz/24-bit. The digital inputs are signal-sensitive, so the MP 5.3 powers on when a signal arrives.
Outputs and System Connections
Volume control is entirely analog, and both the digital and analog outputs can be set to variable or fixed level. That lets the MP 5.3 run straight into a power amplifier or into the line input of an integrated amp. The rear panel carries RCA line and preamp outputs, an XLR preamp output, and coaxial and optical digital outputs.

The line output runs at 2.5 V. A trigger input (5 to 20 V) and two 12 V trigger outputs switch other components on with the MP 5.3, and AVM delays the second trigger output after the first to protect against current surges.
Silver, Black or Cellini Chrome
The screwless aluminum housing comes in silver or black, or as a Cellini version with a chrome front. AVM handcrafts the MP 5.3 at its factory in Malsch, Germany, with quality controls and a multi-day burn-in process. It runs on a 100 V to 240 V, 50/60 Hz supply, draws under 18 W in typical use, and weighs 7.5 kg.

Who Is AVM?
AVM Audio Video Manufaktur has built hi-fi by hand in Germany since 1986, and its products are sold in more than 50 countries. The range runs from the AVM 30.3 series through the Inspiration and Evolution lines to Ovation S, and the Evolution line is where AVM pairs each transistor 3.3 model with a tube-stage 5.3 sister.

What is the difference between the AVM MP 3.3 and the MP 5.3?
What is the difference between the AVM MP 3.3 and the MP 5.3?
The line stage. AVM gives the MP 5.3 a tube line stage, visible through a glass panel in the lid. The MP 3.3 operates exclusively with transistor technology. Both use the same signal processing with ESS 9028 PRO Double-Quad DACs, and both have the slot-in CD drive, X-Stream Engine and HDMI ARC.
Can the AVM MP 5.3 connect straight to a power amplifier?
Can the AVM MP 5.3 connect straight to a power amplifier?
Yes. AVM's manual says the MP 5.3 ships set to fixed output, and its built-in analog volume control is switched on in the SETUP menu. With variable output it can drive a power amplifier through its RCA or XLR preamp outputs. A volume limit, 70% by default, caps the maximum. Left on fixed output, it feeds the line input of an integrated amplifier or preamp.
Does the AVM MP 5.3 have an amplifier for speakers?
Does the AVM MP 5.3 have an amplifier for speakers?
No. The MP 5.3 is a source: a CD player, streamer and DAC with analog volume control. It needs a power amplifier or an integrated amplifier to drive speakers.
Will the AVM MP 5.3 work on US 120-volt power?
Will the AVM MP 5.3 work on US 120-volt power?
Yes. AVM specifies a 100 V to 240 V, 50/60 Hz power supply for the MP 5.3, which covers the US 120 V, 60 Hz supply.
Can I connect my TV to the AVM MP 5.3?
Can I connect my TV to the AVM MP 5.3?
Yes, through HDMI ARC, which accepts up to 192 kHz/24-bit. AVM's manual notes that the ARC input carries stereo audio only, so set your TV to its PCM soundtrack rather than Dolby or DTS. Coaxial and optical inputs are also available.
