AVM MP 30.3 Streaming Media Player

The AVM MP 30.3 is the media player of AVM's 30.3 series: a slot-in CD drive and a streamer with its own DAC, in one 430 mm wide aluminum housing. It has no amplifier, so it feeds the amplifier or preamplifier you already own, and its HDMI ARC input brings your TV's sound into the same system.

AVM fitted an analog volume control as well. The output is fixed by default, and set to variable it adjusts the level in 0.5 dB steps.

CD and Streaming in One Player

The slot-in drive plays CD Audio and CD-R discs to the Red Book standard, and an Eject button sits on the front panel.

Streaming runs on the X-STREAM Engine, AVM's in-house software that updates online. It covers Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect MAX, Qobuz, Roon Ready, UPnP, web radio and AirPlay 2, with AVM's multiroom and party sync modes. The MP 30.3 connects by LAN or dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) and also has Bluetooth 5.0. The rear USB port reads hard drives and USB sticks formatted FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS.

ESS 9038 Q2M DAC and Digital Filters

AVM redesigned the digital section of the MP 30.3 around a next-generation ESS converter, the 9038 Q2M. It plays PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD256, and AVM's signal processing upsamples to 192 kHz/24-bit.

For the digital inputs you can choose between two filter settings. STEEP keeps the frequency response flat to the end of the band, with more phase rotation, and SMOOTH rolls off a little earlier with less phase rotation.

Outputs, Volume and HDMI ARC

The MP 30.3 has two RCA outputs: an uncontrolled line output and a controlled preamp output. AVM rates them at 47 ohms and 470 ohms output impedance, with distortion below 0.001% and a signal-to-noise ratio above 100 dB. The volume control works in 0.5 dB steps once it is set to variable.

The coaxial digital input accepts up to 192 kHz/24-bit and the optical input up to 96 kHz/24-bit. The HDMI ARC input accepts up to 192 kHz/24-bit and carries stereo audio only, so set your TV to output PCM rather than Dolby or DTS. The coaxial and optical digital outputs can be switched to volume-controlled.

Tone Controls and Display

Bass and treble controls and a loudness setting can be switched in, or bypassed with the LINEAR setting. The OLED display is dimmable and has a proximity sensor you can set or switch off.

Silver, Black or Cellini Chrome

The MP 30.3 comes in brushed aluminum silver or black, or as the Cellini version with a chrome front. AVM builds it by hand at its factory in Malsch, Germany, and each unit gets a break-in period of several days.
