Description

The GMT® One System isn’t just a turntable, it’s an engineering benchmark that rethinks what it means to play vinyl in the 21st century. Developed over years by the GMT Consortium and manufactured in its entirety in Sheffield, England, this system is the result of a collaborative alliance of engineers, physicists, designers, and craftspeople, all united by a singular goal: to push analog playback to its absolute peak. With thirty novel developments, including patented and patent-pending technologies, the GMT® One System exists not as a variation on an existing theme but as a wholly new platform. It is, quite simply, unlike anything else in the world of high-end audio.

From its carbon fiber and titanium tonearm to its 15-inch direct drive motor, every part of the GMT® One System has been designed from the ground up with a ruthless devotion to detail. It’s a system that fuses mechanical precision, material science, and aesthetic restraint into a single expression of analog purity. Wilson Benesch has long been known for pushing boundaries, but the GMT® One isn’t an evolution. It’s a beginning.

Design and Development

The GMT® One System is the culmination of a long-term research and development program carried out by the GMT Consortium, a collective that includes academic institutions, advanced materials researchers, and manufacturing specialists. Thirty novel developments are embedded into this system, including international patents and registered design protections. What emerges is not just a single product, but an entirely new platform for analog playback.

From its motor system to the isolation architecture, nothing has been borrowed. Everything has been built. The intellectual property and manufacturing capability reside entirely within Wilson Benesch, ensuring absolute control over every element of the product. This level of vertical integration is almost unheard of in high-end audio today. As such, it’s inconceivable that any similar system using GMT technologies could emerge from outside this environment. The GMT® One System is the purest distillation of Wilson Benesch’s capabilities, and it exists as a category of one.

Made in Sheffield

Sheffield, England, is not just a location, it’s part of the product’s DNA. Known the world over for its industrial legacy, Sheffield has evolved into a center of advanced manufacturing and materials science. It is home to institutions such as The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, as well as the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and the Advanced Manufacturing Park, facilities that serve as critical hubs for innovation across aerospace, automotive, and precision engineering.

Wilson Benesch has drawn on this deep well of regional expertise to bring the GMT® One System to life. Every part of the system is made in Sheffield. Every subassembly is either produced or directly controlled by Wilson Benesch’s own facility. This is not branding. It’s a statement of origin and a promise of quality that stretches back generations, and one that points forward to what’s next in high-fidelity analog performance.

Graviton® Tonearm System

At the center of the GMT® One System lies the Graviton® Ti armwand: a single-piece molded, tapered carbon fiber tube with a quadruple helix construction, reinforced by a graphene epoxy matrix, unidirectional carbon fiber and a Rohacell sandwich section. Wilson Benesch quotes a deflection of just 0.003mm under a maximum stress of 1,232psi. The metal parts, including the counterbalance, are titanium built by selective laser sintering (SLS) in partnership with Renishaw, with hollow and tessellated sections and pockets of un-sintered titanium powder that act like sandbags to absorb energy.

The Graviton® is an engineered interface between the cartridge and the groove. Effective length is 304.8mm and effective mass 14g, the internal wiring is silver and Teflon, and the bearing is designed so an armwand can be changed in less than a minute. VTA is set by the Piezo VTA Control System from the listening seat. The Graviton Ti Armwand is also available as a standalone tonearm for audiophiles building or upgrading their own analog systems.

OMEGA and ALPHA Motor Drive Architecture

Time is everything in analog. Without absolute control over rotational speed and torque, all other precision becomes meaningless. The GMT® One System addresses this with the OMEGA Drive, a synchronous, slot-less, three-phase direct drive motor 15 inches in diameter with 21 coreless poles and zero cogging. At 14kg (31lbs) it is the largest motor designed for a turntable. Once the platter reaches synchronicity, Wilson Benesch says the system needs no feedback or speed compensation: the synchronous motor and the high inertia of the platter hold speed on their own, and wow and flutter is listed as not measurable.

The ALPHA Drive electronics were developed in parallel. A microprocessor runs a start-up algorithm that overcomes the air gap between stator and rotor, then holds constant speed by feeding three pure sine waves through three linear class-A amplifiers to the motor's 21 poles, timed by an 11.2896 MHz quartz crystal. Speeds are 33.3, 45 and 78 rpm, fine-adjustable in 0.01 rpm increments from the control app, and Hall sensors stop the Piezo VTA system from lowering the arm until the platter is exactly at speed.

TESSELLATE Ti Reference Cartridge

Paired with the Graviton® arm is the TESSELLATE Ti, Wilson Benesch’s reference moving coil cartridge, developed as an integral part of the GMT® One System. Its single-piece titanium body and headshell are built by selective laser sintering with a tessellated internal structure, and its hybrid cantilever, available in boron, sapphire or diamond, carries an offset strip of unidirectional carbon fiber for added stiffness and damping at almost no extra mass. This pairing delivers a level of resolution and clarity that is simply beyond reach for most conventional designs.

Unlike many high-end cartridges which are voiced independently, the TESSELLATE Ti was designed as part of the GMT® One System architecture. Its compliance, mass, and electrical characteristics are precisely matched to the arm and interface geometry. This system-level approach ensures not just performance, but coherence: a seamless flow of energy from groove to signal path.

The Tessellate Ti cartridge line is also available as standalone components for use with other tonearms and turntables. Three models span the range: the Tessellate Ti-B (boron cantilever), Tessellate Ti-S (sapphire cantilever), and Tessellate Ti-D (diamond cantilever).

For those drawn to the GMT platform but looking for a more accessible entry point, the Wilson Benesch Greenwich Turntable brings GMT engineering to an entry-level platform turntable. For the full engineering story behind every Wilson Benesch technology, read the Technology Guide.

STAGE One Over-Arm Step-Up Stage

A moving coil cartridge produces a few millivolts, and every inch of cable between it and the step-up stage costs something. STAGE One is Wilson Benesch’s answer: the step-up stage sits directly above the tonearm, in what Wilson Benesch calls an "over arm" design, so the cartridge reaches it without the usual run of interconnects.

Wilson Benesch describes it as a cable management system that removes the mechanical influence of the tonearm wire while providing RF shielding, and the short signal path reduces losses and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference. It is part of the Unified System approach that treats the phono stage as an integral, adjustable element of the turntable.

LeVeL Isolation System

Beneath the GMT® One System lies the LeVeL Isolation System: four microprocessor-controlled pneumatic rams, developed with Thorlabs, whose optomechanical isolation systems are used in laboratory measurement. The system continuously monitors and levels the turntable, and its resonant frequency is 1.7 Hertz.

The plinth is machined to the inverted pyramid form the Thorlabs system needs, and the four supporting points are placed to offset the mass of the off-axis OMEGA Drive motor, armwand, Piezo VTA system and STAGE One. A medical-grade, oil-free air compressor is supplied; it runs only when a significant disturbance occurs, and it can be installed in a separate room. Once configured, the system needs no adjustment.

Integrated Piezo VTA Control

Vertical Tracking Angle (VTA) can dramatically alter the tonal balance and tracking behavior of a cartridge, yet in most systems, it remains static. Wilson Benesch has changed this with the integration of a piezo-actuated VTA control system operated from the supplied smart device.

A linear piezo actuator in the patented Eco-Grip chuck makes repeatable adjustments in 1 nanometer steps (a human hair is 80,000 to 100,000 nanometers across), so VTA can be set for each pressing from the listening position. It’s a level of control previously reserved for laboratory-grade tonearm setups, now seamlessly integrated into the world’s most advanced turntable system.

Wilson Benesch GMT® Control App

The GMT® Control App comes preinstalled on a smart device supplied with the turntable, linked by a supplied router that is preconfigured to connect only to that device and the GMT® One System; it does not connect to the internet. The app handles start and stop, speed and its 0.01 rpm fine adjustment, arm lift and lower, and VTA in 1 nanometer steps. Designed with both transparency and usability in mind, it allows users to see and manage performance parameters with the same precision as the internal electronics.

This is not an accessory. It’s a core part of the GMT® One experience: a modern control interface built with the same engineering rigor as the physical system itself.

The Absolute Sound 'Golden Ear' Award

"Somehow this system brings out the best from every musical genre. It rocks with the greatest grit and authority, swings mightily, and delivers the concert hall's acoustic space and the orchestra's timbral and textural verisimilitude better than any turntable I've so far heard. The years of R&D that went into this project have surely paid off."

FAQ

What makes up the Wilson Benesch GMT One System?

Wilson Benesch designs it as a unified system rather than a turntable with add-ons. The core is the OMEGA Drive, a 15-inch direct drive motor weighing 14kg, run by the ALPHA Drive electronics. Around it sit the LeVeL pneumatic isolation system, the STAGE One step-up stage mounted over the tonearm, the GRAVITON Ti armwand, the TESSELLATE Ti cartridge (with boron, sapphire or diamond cantilever options) and the R1 rack that conceals the drive systems. The complete system weighs 369.5kg (523 lb). Get in touch with Mike to specify the configuration.

Which speeds does the GMT One play, and how is speed controlled?

33.3, 45 and 78 rpm. The OMEGA Drive is a synchronous motor fed three pure sine waves by class-A amplifiers in the ALPHA Drive, timed by an 11.2896MHz quartz crystal, and Wilson Benesch says that once it is synchronized it needs no feedback or speed compensation; it lists wow and flutter as not measurable. Speed can be fine-tuned in 0.01 rpm steps from the control app, and Hall sensors keep the arm from lowering until the platter is exactly at speed.

How is the GMT One controlled?

From a supplied smart device with Wilson Benesch's control app preinstalled, linked to the turntable by a supplied router that connects only to those two and never to the internet. The app handles start and stop, speed, arm lift and lower, and VTA, which a piezo actuator adjusts to within a nanometer from your listening seat.

How does the GMT One's isolation system work?

Four microprocessor-controlled pneumatic rams continuously monitor and level the system, giving a resonant frequency of 1.7Hz, and Wilson Benesch says it needs no adjustment once configured. It comes with an oil-free, medical-grade compressor that runs only after a significant disturbance, and the compressor can be installed in a separate room.

Can I use more than one cartridge on the GMT One?

Yes, by changing armwands. The bearing is designed so a GRAVITON armwand can be swapped in under a minute, and each armwand is supplied with its cartridge set up and semi-permanently bonded to the carbon fiber headshell, with a storage case. A second armwand lets you keep a second cartridge, or a mono cartridge, ready to play.
