Mike's Take

The D-Series has one of the best manual DSP systems available. It lets you correct the problems every single room has in the bass without introducing the drawbacks of applying DSP to the midrange or the treble.

Automated DSP systems often make poor choices because they do not understand what is happening in the room. Perlisten's system works best when you measure with REW using a calibrated microphone and then manually adjust the filters. With the D-Series, you can cross a Magnepan panel as high as 120hz and you will not be able to tell where the panel stops and the subwoofer starts.

The Perlisten D215s is the flagship of Perlisten's THX Dominus certified D-Series, pairing two 380mm carbon fiber drivers in a push-pull configuration that cancels even-order harmonic distortion by a further 10 to 12dB. A 3.0kW smart amplifier drives them in a sealed 92kg cabinet reaching 15Hz in room. It is the most cone area Perlisten puts behind its lowest-distortion design.

Key Features of the Perlisten D215s

  • Dual 15" Push-Pull Drivers: Two 380mm woofers mounted in opposition so their even-order harmonics cancel, which Perlisten measures at a further 10 to 12dB of distortion reduction.
  • THX Dominus Certified: The highest tier THX awards, measured by THX itself against fixed targets for distortion, output and frequency response.
  • 3.0kW Smart Amplifier: Rated at 3.0kW RMS short term, governed by a Ti DSP with 48-bit data paths and a 32-bit ARM Cortex M4 processor running double precision floating point math.
  • Carbon Fiber Diaphragms: Both drivers use carbon fiber composite cones with plus or minus 30mm of linear excursion, 60mm peak to peak.
  • Sealed HDF Cabinet: An acoustic suspension design with no port, in an 80mm-thick front baffle with 30mm HDF elsewhere, braced horizontally and vertically.
  • Advanced App Control: A control app for iOS and Android carrying a 10-band parametric EQ, phase, polarity, time delay and multiple crossover presets.
  • Color LCD Touchscreen: A 2.4" color touchscreen on the top panel reaches every setting without a phone.
  • Aluminum Shorting Rings: Multiple aluminum shorting rings in each motor, with multi-layer Nomex spiders and lightweight aluminum voice coil wire, hold distortion down as excursion rises.

How Push-Pull Cancels Distortion

Push-pull mounts the D215s's two 380mm woofers facing in opposite directions and drives them out of phase with each other, so acoustically they move together while their non-linearities move apart. The asymmetries that produce even-order harmonic distortion cancel between the pair. Perlisten measures the reduction at a further 10 to 12dB.

It is worth being precise about what this buys, because the obvious assumption is wrong. It is not more depth: the D215s reaches 15Hz at -6dB, and so does the smaller D212s on the same 3.0kW amplifier. What push-pull buys is a lower noise floor under the music. The distortion products that would otherwise sit on top of a bass note fall away, so what reaches you is closer to the note itself. Perlisten computer-optimizes every element of the woofer, from the 60mm peak linear excursion through spider compliance to the magnetic motor curve, then validates the result with Klippel test equipment.

The 15-Inch Carbon Fiber Drivers

Each of the two 380mm drivers uses a carbon fiber composite diaphragm with plus or minus 30mm of linear excursion. Around each sit multiple aluminum shorting rings, massive magnets, multi-layer Nomex spiders and lightweight aluminum voice coil wire. Reference sensitivity is 92dB measured at 150mV at one meter.

Those materials are chosen for what they do under load. A carbon fiber composite cone stays rigid where a heavier cone flexes, so the driver starts and stops with the signal instead of ringing after it. The shorting rings linearize the magnetic field the voice coil travels through, which is where a large woofer normally generates its distortion. Doing this twice, in opposition, is what makes the D215s measure the way it does.

Inside the Cabinet

The D215s is an acoustic suspension design, fully sealed with no port, in an 805 x 500 x 650.5mm cabinet weighing 92.0kg. The drivers mount into a front baffle 80mm thick, with 30mm HDF through the rest of the enclosure and bracing running horizontally and vertically.

Sealed alignments avoid the group delay a port introduces around its tuning frequency, which is what listeners hear as tightness, and every Perlisten subwoofer is built this way. The mass exists for the same reason: at 92kg, the energy two 15-inch drivers generate goes into the room rather than into a flexing panel. That baffle thickness is not decorative either. Push-pull cancellation depends on the opposing pair staying in rigid alignment with each other, and the baffle is what holds them there.

The 3.0kW Smart Amplifier

Driving both woofers is an amplifier rated at 3.0kW RMS short term, governed by a Ti DSP with 48-bit data paths and a 32-bit ARM Cortex M4 processor running double precision floating point math. The processor tracks voltage, current and temperature and executes fault detection and performance diagnostics more than 1,000 times per second.

That monitoring is what lets the D215s run hard without protecting itself audibly. Rather than a fixed limiter clamping the signal early, the amplifier knows what the drivers and the power supply are doing in real time and stays in control well below 20Hz. With the Boost EQ engaged the D215s reaches 15Hz at -6dB and 13Hz at -10dB. The THX EQ setting measures 20Hz at -6dB and 16Hz at -10dB, and the Cut setting 24Hz and 18Hz.

Inputs, Outputs and System Integration

The rear panel carries two balanced XLR and two unbalanced RCA inputs, with two balanced XLR and two unbalanced RCA outputs, all unbuffered pass-throughs. A configurable auto turn-on and 12V trigger can be assigned to XLR 1, XLR 1+2, RCA 1 or RCA 1+2.

There are no rotary controls back here. Perlisten moved crossover, gain, phase and everything else onto the top-mounted touchscreen and the app, so setup does not mean reaching around the back of a 92kg cabinet. The unbuffered outputs let you daisy-chain a second subwoofer from the first without an additional splitter, on balanced or single-ended connections.

Perlisten D215s App Control and Room Tuning

The Perlisten app for iOS and Android connects over Bluetooth Low Energy and controls up to eight subwoofers at once. Each one gets three banks of 10 parametric EQ filters, time delay, phase adjustable through 0 to 270 degrees, polarity switching, up to six standard EQ presets, and 24dB lowpass crossovers. Firmware updates arrive over the air through the same app.

Standing waves, seat-to-seat variation and a subwoofer that has to live where the furniture allows are the normal conditions in a listening room, and the parametric filters are the tool for correcting them. The low pass filter can be bypassed entirely or set anywhere from 30 to 160Hz with 6, 12, 18 or 24dB per octave slopes, so the D215s hands off to your main speakers on your terms or takes its crossover from a processor. The 2.4" LCD color touchscreen on the top surface reaches the same settings without a phone.

What THX Dominus Certification Means

THX Dominus is the highest tier THX awards, and THX measures the product itself rather than accepting a manufacturer's figures. Certification covers distortion, output and frequency response against fixed targets, and the Dominus tier is specified for rooms up to 6,500 cubic feet. The D212s, D215s and D15s each hold it as a single unit; the D12s earns it as a pair.

The distinction is worth understanding because THX certification is awarded per model, not per series. Within Perlisten's own catalog it does not travel automatically between siblings: the R212s reaches Dominus only in pairs and is THX Ultra on its own, and several R-Series models carry no THX certification at all.

Where the D215s Fits in the Perlisten D-Series

All four D-Series subwoofers are sealed and share the same 48-bit DSP, 32-bit ARM processor, 2.4" touchscreen and app. The D15s, D212s and D215s are THX Dominus certified as single units; the D12s earns Dominus as a pair. What changes up the line is cone area, amplifier power, and whether the drivers run in a push-pull pair. Worth knowing before you shop by number: the line has two extension figures, not four.

Single driver
$5,495
One 300mm carbon fiber woofer on a 1.5kW amplifier, in a 448 x 420 x 450mm cabinet at 41.0kg. The smallest cabinet in the D-Series, and it gives up no extension to do it: on the Boost EQ setting it reaches the same 16Hz at -6dB as the D15s. Perlisten certifies it THX Dominus as a pair rather than singly, which suits it, because two smaller cabinets in different positions is the arrangement that evens out bass across seats.
$6,595
A 380mm woofer on a 2.0kW amplifier, 528 x 500 x 500mm at 46.0kg. The larger cone shifts substantially more air for the same excursion, so it holds composure at levels that push the D12s harder. Perlisten calls it the smallest single sub certified THX Dominus on earth.
Dual driver, push-pull
$8,795
Two 300mm woofers in push-pull on a 3.0kW amplifier, 68.0kg. Push-pull mounts the drivers in opposition so their even-order harmonics cancel, which Perlisten measures at a further 10 to 12dB of distortion reduction. Extension improves to 15Hz at -6dB.
Perlisten D215s You're viewing
from $9,995
The flagship. Two 380mm woofers in push-pull on the same 3.0kW amplifier, 92.0kg in an 805 x 500 x 650.5mm cabinet. Same 15Hz at -6dB as the D212s, with the cone area of two 15-inch drivers behind it.

The D215s is the most cone area Perlisten puts behind its push-pull design, and the top of the D-Series. If the cabinet is more than your room can take, the D212s above runs the same 3.0kW amplifier and the same push-pull mechanism to the same 15Hz, with two 12-inch drivers instead of two 15s. A magnetic grille is sold separately, since every D-Series sub ships without one: Perlisten Subwoofer Grilles. Browse the full Perlisten range.
