Most USB interfaces convert audio. The Grimm Audio UC1 converts audio, controls your monitoring, handles headphones, manages multiple speaker pairs, and reclocks everything through one of the lowest-jitter oscillators in the industry. It is a 20-channel USB interface and monitor controller built into a single chassis, designed by the same team behind the LS1 loudspeaker system. If your workflow involves both tracking and mixing, the UC1 replaces an entire rack of boxes with one piece of Dutch engineering.

Key Features of the Grimm Audio UC1

  • 18+2 Channel USB Audio: 18 channels on the rear USB port plus a dedicated 2-channel front "i-put" for iPad, iPhone, or laptop. No sample rate restrictions on the front input.
  • Reference-Quality Converters: Both ADC and DAC paths use Grimm's converter topology with hybrid PLL clocking for ultra-low jitter performance.
  • Full Monitor Control: Source selection, speaker pair switching (A/B), dim, mute, mono, and volume from the front panel. No separate monitor controller needed.
  • High-Performance Headphone Output: Dedicated headphone amplifier for critical listening and tracking.
  • Foldback Monitoring: Latency-free monitoring path for recording musicians who need to hear themselves without delay.
  • All XLR Connections: Every analog input and output uses balanced XLR connectors. No compromises on signal integrity.
  • Digital I/O: 4 digital inputs and 4 digital outputs (AES/EBU) for integration with external digital equipment.
  • Word Clock: Clock input and output for synchronizing with external devices. The UC1's internal oscillator can serve as master clock for a small studio.
  • Sample Rates to 192 kHz: Supports 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, and 192 kHz for any workflow.

The "Universal" in UC1

Grimm designed the UC1 around real-world use cases, not spec-sheet features. The 18 rear USB channels split between monitoring outputs and recording inputs. Four analog outputs can feed two pairs of speakers (or one pair plus sub), so switching between nearfields and mains is a button press away. Four analog inputs handle microphones or line-level sources. The dedicated front-panel USB input was designed specifically for the modern workflow where a phone or tablet is always part of the session. Plug it in, select it as a source, and it works at any sample rate without touching the main USB configuration.

Clocking That Matters

The UC1 uses Grimm's hybrid PLL clock architecture, the same approach that earned the CC1 Master Clock its reputation in professional studios worldwide. The converter's jitter performance is on par with dedicated outboard clocks costing as much as the UC1 itself. For studios that already own a CC1 or CC2, the UC1's word clock input allows it to slave to the external reference for absolute synchronization across the entire signal chain.

Built for the Grimm LS1 System

The UC1 is the natural partner for Grimm's LS1 active loudspeakers. Connected via AES/EBU digital output, the signal path from USB to speaker driver is entirely in the digital domain until the LS1's internal DAC and amplifiers take over. This eliminates an entire D/A-A/D conversion stage that conventional setups require. It also works beautifully with any analog-input active or passive speaker system.

Explore the Grimm Audio System

Pair the UC1 with the LS1c, LS1v2, or LS1a loudspeakers for a complete monitoring system. Add the SB1 or LS1s subwoofers for full-range monitoring. For vinyl playback, the PW1 Phono Preamplifier connects directly to the UC1's analog inputs.
