The S2 Driver in the S750

The S750 introduced the S2, a 50mm driver Grado re-engineered from nothing rather than adapting an existing one. The diaphragm is a carbon fiber and paper composite, and it is paired with a lightweight copper-plated aluminum voice coil. Grado's stated aim was definition and dynamic range in a presentation that stays natural rather than clinical.

Carbon fiber and paper are a deliberate pairing. Paper is well damped and self-terminating; carbon fiber is stiff for its mass. A composite of the two is Grado's answer to holding diaphragm shape under load without the ringing a purely stiff material brings with it.

The Grado B Cushion, Explained

The B cushion arrived with the S750 and is the newest shape in the Grado cushion range. It does three things at once: it shortens the distance from driver to ear, it introduces a smaller interior opening that changes the acoustic balance, and eight precisely engineered slits let air move through it, which Grado credits for opening the soundstage while holding onto detail.

The flat surface is the comfort half of the argument. It distributes pressure more evenly across the ear than a domed pad, which is what Grado is aiming at for long sessions. In Richard Grado's words, the point is optionality: "The B cushion gives listeners another way to experience Grado headphones. We've always engineered our drivers to achieve the best sound possible, but we understand that every listener enjoys a slightly different sound signature."

An All-Aluminum Housing at 460 Grams

The S750 housing is aluminum throughout, each one handcrafted in Brooklyn. Aluminum is stiff and dense, which is what keeps the housing from adding its own signature to what the driver is doing, and Grado positions the metal-bodied models as the more analytical half of the Signature Line against the wood-bodied ones.

Weight is where the S750 gains on the range above it. At 460 grams it is over ten percent lighter than the flagship while keeping the same build, and on an open-back headphone worn for hours that difference is felt rather than measured.

The Detachable Cable System

The S750 ships with a six-foot Signature Gold cable terminated in a 6.3mm single-ended plug. The braided construction is softer, more durable and lighter than Grado's older designs, and the improved insulation makes it noticeably more flexible in the hand.

Each cup connects through a four-pin balanced mini XLR, the shared Signature Line connector. Cable length and source termination are therefore later decisions rather than purchase-time ones: Grado builds 4.4mm balanced, four-pin XLR balanced and longer runs against the same socket.

The Headband Assembly

The S750 uses the same headband platform as the rest of the Signature Line, in a slightly narrower leather strap. It keeps the fifty percent extra padding over earlier Grado designs, which is the part that decides whether an hour is comfortable.

Underneath, the assembly is built around wear rather than feel: engraved aluminum alloy gimbals, stainless steel height rods and reinforced aluminum junction blocks, with housing rotation limited to 105 degrees so the moving parts see less travel over the life of the headphone.
