Discover the Magneplanar CCR, a reference center channel speaker designed to accompany the MG 20.7 or MG 3.7i. The CCR is ideal for those seeking an immersive home theater experience by delivering clear dialogue and imaging while integrating seamlessly with your existing Magnepan system. Utilizing the same advanced technology found in the 20.7, the CCR features a true ribbon tweeter and quasi ribbon midrange for accurate and lifelike audio performance.
Key Features
- True Ribbon Tweeter: The CCR incorporates a true ribbon tweeter, like the MG 20.7, but curved, delivering crisp, transparent highs.
- Curved Quasi Ribbon Midrange: The curved quasi ribbon midrange provides 213 square inches of radiating area, offering natural and balanced midrange sound.
- Higher Efficiency: Designed for the increased demands of home theater, the CCR ensures higher efficiency for consistent performance.
- Seamless Integration: Works perfectly with Magnepan's front speakers or DWM Bass Panels for full-range sound in your home theater system.
- Compact Reference Design: A compact yet powerful speaker that provides state-of-the-art audio without the need for a large radiating area.
Design and Build
The Magnepan CCR is engineered to be a reference-quality center channel speaker, making it an ideal companion to the MG 20.7 or MG 3.7i. The CCR features a true ribbon tweeter and a curved quasi ribbon midrange to ensure a coherent soundstage. The curved design of the tweeter and midrange allows the speaker to deliver excellent dispersion and imaging, creating an immersive experience that locks dialogue to the screen.
The CCR is designed to overcome the constraints often imposed by home theater setups, where the available space and height for the center channel are dictated by the video display. Despite these limitations, Magnepan's advanced planar magnetic technology ensures the CCR delivers exceptional audio clarity and performance. Unlike other center channel speakers that use dynamic midbass couplers, the CCR maintains consistent tonality across the frequency spectrum, achieving a balanced sound without compromise.
Performance
The CCR is built to handle the critical role of the center channel in a home theater system, which typically carries 60-70% of the audio content, including dialogue. The true ribbon tweeter ensures that high frequencies remain clear and precise, while the quasi ribbon midrange provides warmth and naturalness to vocals and effects. This combination results in a center channel speaker that can reproduce even the most demanding movie soundtracks with accuracy and detail.
While the CCR is not intended to match the sheer scale of the MG 20.7, it is specifically designed to complement the larger Magnepan models, delivering impactful and precise audio that brings films to life. The CCR's higher efficiency means it can keep up with the demands of dynamic movie soundtracks, ensuring a consistent, high-quality performance.
Technology
The Magnepan CCR leverages advanced planar magnetic technology, similar to that used in the MG 20.7 and MG 3.7i. The true ribbon tweeter and curved quasi ribbon midrange work together to deliver an expansive soundstage with accurate imaging. The 213 square inches of radiating area for the midrange driver ensures balanced and rich audio reproduction, while the ribbon tweeter delivers transparent highs. This combination provides a seamless listening experience that integrates well with the front speakers and bass panels for a complete home theater solution.
Versatility and Compatibility
The Magnepan CCR is compatible with a variety of home theater configurations, making it an ideal choice for those who want a reference-quality center channel without compromising on space. It pairs with Magnepan's front speakers or DWM Bass Panels to create a soundstage that envelops listeners in detailed, immersive audio. Its compact design also allows for flexible placement, overcoming the challenges often posed by limited space in home theater systems. It also works alongside the MC1 on-wall speakers as surrounds for a complete Magnepan home theater.

Which Magnepan speakers is the CCR designed to match?
Which Magnepan speakers is the CCR designed to match?
Magnepan designed the CCR as the companion center channel for the 20.7 and 3.7i. It uses a curved true ribbon tweeter of the same design as those models and a curved quasi-ribbon midrange similar to the 20.7's, with 213 square inches of radiating area. Magnepan is candid about it: "The CCR is no 20.7."
Magnepan CCR or CC5?
Magnepan CCR or CC5?
The tweeter is the main difference. The CCR has a true ribbon tweeter and a response of 200Hz to 40kHz; the CC5 uses a quasi-ribbon super-tweeter and reaches 20kHz. Both have the same 213-square-inch midrange, 88dB sensitivity and 3-ohm impedance. The CCR measures 39.5 x 15 x 5.5 inches and weighs 27 lb, against the CC5's 36 x 10.5 x 5 inches and 13 lb. Magnepan pairs the CC5 with the 1.7 or 3.6.
What amplifier does the CCR need?
What amplifier does the CCR need?
A high-current amplifier stable into low impedances. The CCR is a 3-ohm speaker, and Magnepan says that while some receivers can drive low impedances, separate amplifiers are usually built to a higher standard and are recommended. Magnepan says it designed the CCR for higher efficiency, 88dB, because home theater places greater demands on the center channel.
Where should the CCR go?
Where should the CCR go?
In or on a cabinet, credenza or shelf, with felt pads supplied for the base. As a dipole it needs at least 12 inches of clearance from its back to the surface behind it, and Magnepan says damping material there helps tame resonances. Angle it toward the listeners for correct phasing between tweeter and midrange; the supplied adjustable foot tilts it upward, and 1/4-20 T-nuts in the base allow custom mounting.
What processor settings does the CCR need?
What processor settings does the CCR need?
Magnepan says the CCR is not a plug-and-play center. Set the center channel to "small" with its crossover at 200 to 250Hz, or as low as 150Hz if your processor stops there, and defeat any automatic room EQ in favor of manual adjustment. Bass below the crossover has to come from somewhere: Magnepan's manual covers routing it to the front left and right speakers, to a DWM bass panel or to its CC Speaker Stand.
