Design and Build
The Magnepan CC5 is a compact center channel speaker designed to overcome the typical constraints of home theater systems. Most center channel speakers are limited by the available space beneath or above the video screen, but the CC5 employs Magnepan's innovative planar magnetic technology to maintain exceptional sound quality despite these limitations. The CC5 is capable of wall mounting and can also be used in a dual center configuration with on-wall Magneplanar speakers for even better audio imaging.
Performance
Unlike conventional center channel speakers that rely on dynamic midbass couplers, the CC5 achieves a consistent tonality and minimizes the compromises that often impact the performance of typical home theater systems. An experienced Maggie reviewer, Michael Trei, from Sound + Vision (November 2010) said it best:
"No matter what type of movie I played, dialogue clarity was always exemplary. I would rate the CC 5 as the most focused and transparent center channel speaker I've yet encountered, with none of the off-axis frequency response anomalies you hear with some dynamic models. The CC5 was able to lock the dialogue to the center of the screen with razor-sharp precision over a wide arc of listening positions, and it made even voices buried way down in the mix easy to comprehend."
Technology
The Magnepan CC5 high efficiency and low distortion makes it ideal for home theater applications where clarity and accuracy are crucial. The CC5 is designed to work in tandem with the front speakers or DWM Bass Panels, creating a seamless transition between channels that adds depth and realism to movies and TV shows. The planar design also minimizes off-axis frequency response issues, ensuring consistent sound quality across the entire room.
Versatility and Compatibility
The Magnepan CC5 is versatile enough to fit into a variety of home theater configurations. It can be wall-mounted below a video monitor or used in a dual-center setup with Magneplanar on-wall models to provide a more immersive center channel experience. Its compact size makes it easy to integrate into most spaces, and its compatibility with the broader range of Magnepan speakers ensures a consistent and harmonious sound profile throughout your home theater system. Pair it with the MC1 on-wall speakers as surrounds to complete a full Magnepan home theater.

How do I get bass out of the CC5?
How do I get bass out of the CC5?
The CC5 runs from 200Hz up, so something else has to carry the rest, and Magnepan gives you two routes. Run a DWM Bass Panel ahead of it and take the CC5 from the DWM's high output, which keeps the center channel all planar. Or, with no DWM, set your processor's center channel to small with the crossover at 200 to 250Hz, or as low as 150Hz if it will not go higher, select no subwoofer, and let the large left and right Magneplanars carry the center's midbass and bass.
What amplifier does the CC5 need?
What amplifier does the CC5 need?
A high-current one. The CC5 is a 3 ohm speaker and Magnepan specifies amplification that stays stable into low impedances. That holds whether the center channel amplifier drives it directly or it is fed from a DWM Bass Panel, because the DWM wiring arrangement also presents a nominal 3 ohms.
Can the CC5 be wall mounted?
Can the CC5 be wall mounted?
Yes, and it is designed for it. Two vertical wood supports on the back take a small omni-mount cantilever, fixed with four 10 by 3/4 inch wood screws, typically below a video monitor. Magnepan asks for 12 inches of clearance measured from the back of the CC5 to the surface behind it, and says the speaker should be extended from the wall to the maximum distance available when it is playing. It is a dipole, so what happens behind it matters.
Will the CC5 work with non-Magnepan front speakers?
Will the CC5 work with non-Magnepan front speakers?
It will work, but it is not what it was built for. Magnepan's own documentation pairs the CC5 with Magnepan fronts or a DWM Bass Panel. What drives that is dispersion rather than tone: an open-back planar panel radiates front and back and covers a room differently from a sealed or ported box. Put one between two conventional speakers and dialogue can shift character as it pans across the front. If your mains are Magneplanars, this is the center that matches them.
How does the CC5 differ from the CCR and CCRx?
How does the CC5 differ from the CCR and CCRx?
Size, and where in the line it belongs. Magnepan describes the CC5 as modeled on the technology of the CCR: a two-way quasi-ribbon midrange and tweeter with a quasi-ribbon super-tweeter, 213 square inches of midrange radiating area, 200Hz to 20kHz, 88dB, 3 ohms, 13 pounds. The CCR and CCRx are the larger reference centers, built to partner the bigger Magneplanars. Magnepan rates the CC5's performance as appropriate for either 1.7- or 3.6-class fronts.
