The 20.7 introduces a push-pull magnet structure. All the smaller Magnepans have a magnet structure on only one side of the Mylar. The 20.7 has magnets on the front and on the back. This doubles the magnetic field strength and gives you significantly more bass punch and overall dynamic ability.

The 20.7 is the fullest-range, most neutral, seamless, and grainless single-panel loudspeaker that Magnepan has yet made. The 20.7 does a disappearing act that is hard to believe given the size of its panels, vanishing into a soundfield that can balloon to colossal proportions. I don't think there is another speaker that makes a well-recorded piano sound more like an actual piano than this Maggie. If the sound absolute is what you crave, Magnepan's new flagships earn my highest and warmest recommendation.
After living with the Magnepan 20.7s for over three months, I have no choice but to report that, in my opinion, this speaker does indeed set new standards as to the capabilities of a flagship planar transducer.
Both are three-way designs with a true ribbon tweeter over quasi-ribbon midrange and bass, rated at 86dB and 4 ohms. The 20.7 is a larger panel, 29 inches wide by 79 tall against the 3.7i's 24 by 71, and Magnepan rates it down to 25Hz against the 3.7i's 35Hz, with 76% of its radiating area given to bass. Mike points to the magnet structure as the big change: the 20.7 is push-pull, with magnets on both the front and back of the Mylar, which he credits with more bass punch and dynamic ability.
How much amplifier power do the Magnepan 20.7s need?
More than most speakers. Magnepan rates the 20.7 at 86dB sensitivity into a 4-ohm nominal load and does not publish a wattage figure. The Absolute Sound's reviewer found they performed best with amplifiers rated at 300 watts or more into 4 ohms. Get in touch with Mike with your amplifier and he will tell you whether it is enough.
Magnepan 20.7 or 20.7x?
The 20.7x is Magnepan's premium version of the same speaker, sold alongside the standard 20.7, not a replacement for it. It keeps the same driver, frame, size and fabric, and Magnepan refines the design through simplification, better components and balancing. The X tier also opens additional stile options: Acorn Oak, Bamboo, Red Aluminum and Black Wood. Every X model we sell is built as a Listening Room Special, with custom Cardas binding posts.
How should I set up the Magnepan 20.7s?
Magnepan's manual starts with the speakers about 3 feet from the wall behind them, moved forward or back in 6 to 12 inch steps, and separated by 50 to 60% of the distance to your chair. Angle them inward rather than parallel to the wall. Put the tweeters on the outside for a wider sweet spot, or on the inside for a single listener, and keep the tweeter no closer to your seat than the bass section: if the bass panel is 10 feet 6 inches away, the tweeter should be at least 10 feet 7 inches.
Do the Magnepan 20.7s need anything fitted before they will play?
Yes. They ship with the tweeter jumpers removed, and the tweeter will not play until you fit either the supplied 1-ohm resistor or the jumper. Magnepan says the resistor gives the smoothest response in most rooms and the jumper suits rooms that are very large or heavily damped. A 1-ohm resistor on the midrange gives a warmer balance. The midrange and tweeter are protected by 5 amp and 2.5 amp fast-blow fuses; Magnepan warns never to raise those values or use slow-blow fuses.
