The Rega Aya is a floorstanding loudspeaker that completely rewrites the rulebook on cabinet design. Born from over a decade of research by Rega’s founder Roy Gandy, the Aya abandons traditional wood and MDF in favor of a unique, UK-manufactured Glass Reinforced Cement (GRC) enclosure. This innovative material allows for a sculptured, incredibly rigid cabinet that virtually eliminates resonance, providing the perfect acoustic platform for Rega’s handmade drivers. With a sleek "floating" tripod stance and a raw, honest aesthetic, the Aya delivers a performance that is as striking and transparent as its design—offering tight, accurate bass and the legendary Rega midrange at an unprecedented price point.
Key Features:
- Glass Reinforced Cement (GRC) Cabinet: A custom-moulded shell that is lightweight yet immensely rigid, vastly superior to MDF in preventing energy storage and coloration.
- 2.5-Way Band Pass Design: Sophisticated internal architecture ensures seamless integration between drivers for a coherent and balanced soundstage.
- Handmade Rega Drivers: Features the dedicated 5-inch MX-125 mid-bass and 7-inch RR 7.8 bass drivers, designed and assembled in-house.
- ZRR High Frequency Unit: Utilizes Rega’s Zero Rear Reflection tweeter technology for crystal-clear highs without distortion.
- Sculpted "Floating" Design: The cabinet sits on a fixed tripod stand, giving the speaker a weightless appearance while providing superb stability.
- Unique Aesthetic: The raw GRC finish means every cabinet is unique, with natural surface micropores and variations that add industrial character.
Breaking the Mould
The defining feature of the Aya is its cabinet material. Standard wooden cabinets can vibrate and "smear" the music. Rega’s solution is GRC—Glass Reinforced Cement. Developed in collaboration with a UK company specializing in bespoke concrete furniture, this material allows for a complex, curved shape that discourages internal standing waves. The result is a speaker enclosure that is acoustically dead, ensuring you hear the instruments, not the box.
Handmade Precision
Inside the revolutionary shell lies a trio of Rega’s handmade drivers. The 2.5-way system utilizes a 7-inch RR 7.8 driver dedicated to bass frequencies, providing heft and punch, while the 5-inch MX-125 handles the critical mid-band with speed and articulation. Highs are delivered by the ZRR (Zero Rear Reflection) soft dome tweeter. This combination creates a fast, dynamic sound with a natural tonality that suits everything from delicate acoustic tracks to driving rock rhythms.
Acoustic Engineering
The Aya isn't just a pretty shape; it’s a highly tuned acoustic instrument. The internal volume utilizes a band-pass alignment, optimized to get the most out of the GRC shell. The front-ported design makes them relatively easy to place in a room, allowing them to work close to walls without booming. The crossover is minimalistic, designed to let the natural roll-off of the drivers do the work, maintaining the phase coherence and timing that Rega fans love.
Industrial Elegance
The Aya embraces its materials. The "Steel Grey" finish is the natural color of the cement, often featuring small air bubbles and flow marks from the casting process. These are not imperfections but hallmarks of the unique construction method. Combined with the brushed-effect front baffle and the integrated tripod stand, the Aya looks like a piece of modern sculpture that disappears into your listening room, leaving only the music behind.
