The Magnepan Mini Maggie System X is the Mini Maggie System built to Magnepan's X standard: matched drivers, X crossover components and a set of DWM²x bass panels, in the desktop speaker system that puts a scaled-down 20.7x midrange and ribbon tweeter at arm's length. Choose the Big Mini X and the three-way system becomes a four-way: a mini 30.7x.
Key Features of the Magnepan Mini Maggie System X
- Two configurations, and they are different speakers: the Mini Maggie System X is a three-way with a set of DWM²x bass panels. The Big Mini X is a four-way with two custom-configured DWMx panels and their crossover boxes. The selector above names both.
- Matched drivers and the X crossover treatment: capacitors tested and paired to within thousandths, air-core coils wound and measured at Magnepan, solid copper bus wire and silver-soldered joints.
- Two bass panels in the box, not one: the standard Mini Maggie System ships with a single DWM. Both X configurations ship with a pair, one per channel.
- Big Mini X: sub-bass, mid-bass, midrange, tweeter: these are not stock DWMx panels. They are custom-wired, with their own crossover boxes, and the two drivers in each are split into separate frequency branches, so sub-bass and mid-bass get their own while the satellites keep the midrange and the true ribbon tweeter. The same four-way layout as the 30.7, made small.
- Miniaturized 20.7x satellites: the Mini Maggie satellite is a scaled-down version of the 20.7x midrange and tweeter, 14 inches tall.
- One of two models where the X upgrade changes the driver configuration: on every other X the driver layout stays as it is and the X work happens in the circuit behind it. The 1.7x and the Big Mini X are the two whose driver configuration changes.
Magnepan X Series: The Secret Menu
Three X Series speakers that never made the catalog. Each one started with a customer who wanted something Magnepan does not make, and Mick, Magnepan's X Series Architect, built it. They are still nowhere on Magnepan's website, which is about the only thing still secret about them.
- Built to order in any of Magnepan's twelve fabric and trim combinations.

Mini Maggie System X or Big Mini X?
The Mini Maggie System X is the standard system with everything upgraded: the same two satellites, the same three-way layout, but with matched drivers, X crossover components, and a set of DWM²x bass panels instead of one DWM. It is the Mini Maggie System as Magnepan builds it when the parts budget is not the constraint. The Big Mini X changes what the system is. Its bass panels are custom-configured DWMx, wired to order with their own crossover boxes rather than left as stock panels: the two drivers in each are split into separate frequency branches, one for sub-bass and one for mid-bass, with the satellites handling midrange and treble. That is a four-way, and it is the same division of labor as the 30.7: a mini 30.7x. If you want the desktop Magnepan done to the X standard, the Mini Maggie System X is it. If you want the flagship architecture at a size that fits a desk or a small room, that is the Big Mini X.
How the Big Mini X becomes a four-way
Inside any one DWM panel there are two separate voice coils, two separate drivers, and by default each one has its own crossover network, fed as a left and a right inside the same chassis. In a standard Mini Maggie System that panel still does one job, everything below the satellites, and the satellites are a two-way, midrange and tweeter, so the system is a three-way. The custom-configured DWMx is wired to order, with its own crossover boxes. Its 3 ohm primary driver and 3 ohm secondary driver are split into two separate frequency branches, and in the Big Mini X they divide the bottom end into sub-bass and mid-bass. Add the midrange and the ribbon tweeter on each satellite and you have four ways, each driver covering the range it is built for. Magnepan's 30.7 is a four-panel, four-way speaker for the same reason: the more narrowly each diaphragm is tasked, the less it has to compromise. The Big Mini X is that idea at desk scale.
What the X treatment changes inside the Mini Maggie System X
Magnepan's X program replaces almost everything between the speaker cable and the driver. The capacitors are copper-rich polypropylene, each one tested and sorted, and the banks re-tested so left and right match within five thousandths. The coils are air-core, bobbin-wound copper made at Magnepan and measured for inductance, resistance and Q before and after they go on the board. Bus wire is 15-gauge or heavier solid copper with the excess removed, and every connection except the terminal screw is silver-soldered. The drivers themselves are matched as a pair. On a system built for near-field listening, where the satellites are a few feet from your ears, that left-to-right matching is the part you hear first.

On the desk, or as a small-room system
The Mini Maggie System was designed and voiced for the desk: satellites at ear height with room to breathe, the bass panel in the foot well where the desk gives it boundary reinforcement, tweeters padded with the supplied 1 ohm resistors for near-field listening. Magnepan's manual says the system will work as a woofer-and-satellite system in a small room too, with two bass panels rather than one, stand-mounted satellites at ear level, and the panels the same distance from the listener as the satellites. Both X configurations ship with two panels, so that setup is in the box. The system is a nominal 4 ohm load and wants a high-current amplifier that is comfortable driving 4 ohms; a room system needs more of it than a desk does.
Where the Mini Maggie System X fits in the Magnepan line
The Mini Maggie is a 20.7 in miniature, and the Big Mini X borrows its layout from the 30.7. Here is that family, price-ordered.

What is the difference between the Mini Maggie System X and the standard Mini Maggie System?
What is the difference between the Mini Maggie System X and the standard Mini Maggie System?
Three things. The drivers are matched as a pair. The crossover is the X treatment, with tested and paired copper-rich polypropylene capacitors, air-core coils wound and measured at Magnepan, solid copper bus wire and silver-soldered joints. And the system ships with a set of DWM²x bass panels instead of the standard system's single DWM. The satellites are the same miniaturized 20.7 midrange and true ribbon tweeter as the Mini Maggie System.
What does the Big Mini X add over the Mini Maggie System X?
What does the Big Mini X add over the Mini Maggie System X?
A different bass panel, and with it a different architecture. The Big Mini X uses custom-configured DWMx panels and their crossover boxes. Each has a 3 ohm primary and a 3 ohm secondary driver, and in this configuration they are split into two separate frequency branches, so sub-bass and mid-bass each get their own driver while the satellites carry the midrange and the ribbon tweeter. That makes it a four-way where the Mini Maggie System X is a three-way, the same division of labor as the four-way 30.7: a mini 30.7x. Along with the 1.7x, it is one of only two Magnepan models whose driver configuration changes with the X upgrade; every other X keeps the standard model's layout.
Can the Mini Maggie System X be used as a small-room system instead of a desktop system?
Can the Mini Maggie System X be used as a small-room system instead of a desktop system?
Yes, with the setup Magnepan describes in its manual: the satellites stand-mounted at ear height, the bass panels the same distance from the listener as the satellites, and two bass panels rather than one for adequate bass balance out in a room. Both X configurations ship with two panels, so that part is in the box. Magnepan is candid that the system was voiced for the desk, where the foot well gives the bass panel boundary reinforcement, and that it takes some experimentation to get the phasing right in a room; reversing the polarity of the satellites relative to the panels is the first thing to try. A room system also needs more amplifier than a desk does.
What amplifier does the Mini Maggie System X need?
What amplifier does the Mini Maggie System X need?
The system is a nominal 4 ohm load and Magnepan specifies a high-current amplifier that can safely drive 4 ohms. At this level the amplifiers we would put on it are the Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum III, whose 100 watts per channel of tube power Mike rates as enough for any Magnepan, the Audia Flight FLS 9, which drives down to 2 ohms, or the Rogue Audio Stereo 100 with a preamplifier. A desk system needs less power than a room system, and the supplied 1 ohm resistors pad the tweeters for near-field listening. Get in touch with Mike with the rest of your system and he will match the amplifier to the configuration you are ordering.
