The Magnepan MC1x is the on-wall MC1 speaker with Magnepan's X treatment inside its one-inch-deep panel: the crossover rebuilt with hand-tested copper-rich polypropylene capacitors, in-house air-core copper coils and silver-soldered solid copper wiring, matched left to right. From the front it is an MC1. It comes two ways, with the standard MC1 hinge wiring or with an optional conventional faceplate that adds binding posts on the back.
Key Features of the Magnepan MC1x
- The full X crossover treatment: capacitors tested and paired to within thousandths, air-core coils wound and measured at Magnepan, 15-gauge or heavier solid copper bus wire, every joint silver-soldered.
- Standard MC1 wiring: the speaker wire leaves through the wall-mount hinge, exactly as on the MC1, with no binding posts. The cleanest look on the wall.
- Optional conventional faceplate: a nameplate on the back of the panel with conventional binding posts, for anyone who wants to run their own cable and connectors.
- Same panel, same footprint: a two-way quasi-ribbon on-wall speaker, one inch deep, that folds flat against the wall when it is not in use and angles out when it is.
- 80 Hz to 24 kHz on the wall: the wall or cabinet provides the boundary reinforcement that lets a panel this thin reach 80 Hz.
- Surround, dual center, or music speaker: everything the MC1 does in a home theater or a tight two-channel room, the MC1x does with the X crossover behind the fabric.
Magnepan X Series: The Secret Menu
Three X Series speakers that never made the catalog. Each one started with a customer who wanted something Magnepan does not make, and Mick, Magnepan's X Series Architect, built it. They are still nowhere on Magnepan's website, which is about the only thing still secret about them.
- Built to order in any of Magnepan's twelve fabric and trim combinations.
- Mike walks you through the options before the build starts.

Standard MC1 wiring or the conventional faceplate?
On an MC1 the speaker wire comes out through the hinge that mounts the panel to the wall, and there are no binding posts anywhere on the speaker. That is the standard MC1x as well: the X crossover inside, the wiring exit unchanged, nothing on the back but fabric. The optional conventional faceplate is a nameplate fitted to the back of the panel with conventional binding posts on it. Choose it if you want to terminate your own speaker cable, use spades or bananas, or swap cables later without touching the hinge. Choose the standard wiring if the point of an on-wall speaker is that nothing shows. Both versions carry the same X treatment; the faceplate changes how you connect, not how the crossover is built. The selector above names both so the order arrives built the way you want it.
What the X treatment changes inside the MC1x
Magnepan's X program replaces almost everything between the speaker cable and the driver. The capacitors are copper-rich polypropylene, each one tested and sorted, and the banks re-tested so left and right match within five thousandths. The coils are air-core, bobbin-wound copper made at Magnepan and measured for inductance, resistance and Q before and after they go on the board. Bus wire is 15-gauge or heavier solid copper with the excess removed, and every connection except the terminal screw is silver-soldered. Only copper, silver and gold are allowed in the circuit. On a panel as small as the MC1 that means a crossover built to the standard of a 3.7x, in a speaker that hangs on a wall.

Surrounds, a dual center array, or a music speaker
The MC1x mounts to a wall or the side of a cabinet, or stands on Magnepan's optional floor stands. As surrounds, a pair brings the planar speed and open dispersion of the front channels to the sides or rear of a home theater. Two MC1x panels angled toward the wall on either side of a screen make a dual center array: Magnepan's own demonstration of that layout kept dialogue centered on the screen and raised the center image to screen height. In a room that cannot take a floorstanding panel, a pair on the wall with a bass panel or a subwoofer underneath is a two-channel Magnepan system. It presents a 4 ohm load and is rated for 40 to 200 watts at 8 ohms, so the amplifier needs to be comfortable into 4 ohms. Keep it out of corners.

What is the difference between the MC1x and the MC1?
What is the difference between the MC1x and the MC1?
The panel, the drivers and the footprint are the same. What changes is the crossover: the MC1x gets Magnepan's X treatment, with copper-rich polypropylene capacitors tested and paired, air-core copper coils wound and measured at Magnepan, 15-gauge or heavier solid copper bus wire, and silver-soldered connections throughout, with the pair matched left to right. From the front it looks like an MC1. The other difference is optional: the MC1x can be ordered with a conventional faceplate that adds binding posts on the back, which the MC1 does not offer.
Standard MC1 wiring or the optional conventional faceplate: which should I order?
Standard MC1 wiring or the optional conventional faceplate: which should I order?
On the standard MC1x, as on the MC1, the speaker wire leaves through the wall-mount hinge and there are no binding posts on the speaker. Choose it if the point of an on-wall speaker is that nothing shows. The optional conventional faceplate is a nameplate on the back of the panel with conventional binding posts, so you can terminate your own cable with spades or bananas and swap cables later without touching the hinge. Both versions carry the same X crossover; the faceplate changes how you connect, not how the speaker is built.
Can the MC1x be used as surround speakers, a center channel, or for stereo music?
Can the MC1x be used as surround speakers, a center channel, or for stereo music?
All three, the same way the MC1 can. As surrounds, a pair brings planar speed and open dispersion to the sides or rear of a home theater. Two MC1x panels angled about 30 degrees to the wall on either side of a screen form a dual center array, which Magnepan demonstrated at CES and which keeps dialogue centered on the screen at screen height. In a room that cannot take a floorstanding panel, a pair on the wall with a bass panel or a subwoofer underneath is a two-channel Magnepan system. Keep them out of corners, especially as front channels.
What amplifier does the MC1x need?
What amplifier does the MC1x need?
The MC1x is a 4 ohm speaker rated for 40 to 200 watts at 8 ohms, so it wants an amplifier that stays stable into 4 ohms with a strong power supply, not a receiver that derates at 4 ohms. Look at an amplifier's 4 ohm rating, not its 8 ohm number. For two-channel use, integrated amplifiers such as the Rogue Audio Sphinx v3, Cambridge Audio EXA100 or Primare I25 have the 4 ohm stability and current the panel likes. The MC1x reaches down to 80 Hz on the wall; for home theater or full-range music, add a DWMx bass panel to stay planar, or a subwoofer from REL or Perlisten for the bottom octave.
