Goldring E1 or E2: what does the E2 add?

A stiffer cantilever. Both use the same bonded spherical stylus (0.6 mil). The E1 mounts it on a carbon-fiber reinforced cantilever, which Goldring says gives results comparable to aluminum in most entry-level systems; the E2 uses aluminum, which Goldring says traces medium and high frequencies more accurately, with less distortion and mistracking on loud passages.

Can I start with the E1 and upgrade later?

Yes, without buying a new body. The whole E-series shares one body, so the styli are interchangeable: the E1 can take an E2, E3 or E4 stylus later and move up the range with no remounting.

Will the Goldring E1 replace the cartridge on my entry-level turntable?

That is what Goldring designed it for. It calls the E1 and E2 ideal upgrades for any entry-level, pre-fitted or obsolete cartridge. It fits any tonearm with standard half-inch fixing centers, suits arms of 10 to 30g effective mass, and plugs into a standard MM or phono input. Its stylus angle is set at the factory, so no horizontal tracking adjustment is needed, and it tracks at 2g.

How long does the E1's spherical stylus last?

Goldring puts a well-cared-for spherical diamond at up to 500 hours before wear noticeably affects performance. When it is worn, you replace only the stylus assembly: it slides out of the front of the body and the new one pushes in until flush.
