Engineering and Build
The Reference Pre is crafted in Italy with extreme attention to mechanical and electrical detail. Every wood element is made of solid timber, lacquered by hand using only natural oils. This isn’t just for aesthetics. The wood panels help dampen resonance and minimize chassis vibration, improving sound quality.
Inside, the layout is fully dual mono, ensuring independent signal paths for left and right channels. The phono board itself is suspended on a spring isolation system, minimizing microphonic interference. Output options include both XLR and RCA, and users can manually switch via internal jumpers depending on their preferred cabling.
Every internal component was chosen for its sonic performance, not its cost. This includes oversized power transformers, premium resistors, and high-tolerance capacitors throughout. The volume control is motorized and controllable by the included radio-frequency remote, ensuring clean power delivery with tactile usability.
Analog Versatility
Whether you're running multiple line-level sources or dual turntables, the Reference Pre accommodates complex setups with grace:
- Two dedicated phono inputs, each with its own gain and load options
- Anti-rumble filter toggle for analog playback
- Switchable monitor/tape loop functionality
- Separate subwoofer output with its own active path
- Manual mute and volume controls on the front panel
Setup is straightforward, but final performance is anything but simple. When fully warmed up, the Reference Pre delivers deeply immersive, holographic sound with an organic midrange, lifelike dynamics, and exceptional bandwidth from top to bottom.
The Listening Room Difference
The Unison Research Reference Pre isn’t the kind of product that gets left on your porch. At this level, white-glove matters. That’s why Michael Hoatson, owner of The Listening Room, personally hand-delivers and installs this unit nationwide for free with purchase.
Mike works closely with every customer to ensure proper system integration, voltage matching, gain staging, and phono configuration. No shipping company will handle this preamp with the care and technical precision he brings to your door.
