Is it worth stepping up from the Perlisten R15s to the D15s?
Is it worth stepping up from the Perlisten R15s to the D15s?
It depends on whether you need THX Dominus output from a single subwoofer. Both use a 380mm driver in a sealed cabinet with the same DSP, app and touchscreen. The D15s uses a carbon fiber diaphragm with plus or minus 30mm of linear excursion on a 2.0kW amplifier; the R15s uses glass fiber with 23.7mm on 1.0kW. The D15s is THX Dominus certified as a single subwoofer, and Perlisten lists no THX certification for the R15s. Published low-end extension on the THX EQ curve is 20Hz at -6dB for both, so the step up buys output and headroom rather than depth.
Is the Perlisten R15s THX certified?
Is the Perlisten R15s THX certified?
No. Perlisten lists no THX certification on the R15s product page or its datasheet. Its THX-certified subwoofers are the D-Series, where the D15s holds THX Dominus on its own and a pair of D12s does the same. The R15s still carries Perlisten's THX EQ curve, which is one of its three EQ modes, so it can be tuned to the THX target response without holding the certification.
How do I set up the R15s with my AV receiver's calibration?
How do I set up the R15s with my AV receiver's calibration?
Let the receiver run bass management first. Perlisten's subwoofer manual, written for its THX-certified D-Series and dual-driver R models, says those subs default to no crossover, delay, phase or polarity adjustment so your processor has full control, and the same approach applies to the R15s: leave its low-pass filter on bypass when it is fed from an LFE output. Run the receiver's room correction with the sub in place. The same manual suggests the Cut EQ curve when you use room correction, because it adds no factory EQ and leaves the natural response of the driver in its enclosure. The 10-band parametric EQ in Perlisten's app is there for fine tuning after that.
What is the difference between the R15s's THX, Boost and Cut EQ modes?
What is the difference between the R15s's THX, Boost and Cut EQ modes?
They change how deep the R15s is allowed to play. On the THX EQ curve it reaches 20Hz at -6dB and 16Hz at -10dB, and Perlisten's subwoofer manual, written for its certified models that share these three curves, calls THX the best starting point for most installations. Boost extends that to 16Hz at -6dB and 14Hz at -10dB, for rooms that give the sub less help from nearby walls. Cut rolls off earlier, at 25Hz at -6dB and 19Hz at -10dB, and is the natural response of the driver in its box, which is why that manual suggests it when room correction is doing the work. Each mode can be selected from the touchscreen or the app.
