The Opera Callas Diva brings the performance of Opera's flagship Grand Callas into a more compact floorstanding design, reaching down to 30Hz with 90dB sensitivity. This three-way speaker features premium Scan-Speak drivers throughout, including an 8-inch long-throw woofer, 7-inch midrange, and the signature rear-firing dipole system with dual out-of-phase tweeters for an immersive, three-dimensional soundstage.
Key Features of the Opera Callas Diva
- 8" Scan-Speak Long-Throw Woofer: Aluminum cone with rubber surround in reflex-loaded configuration delivers deep, controlled bass to 30Hz.
- 7" Midrange Driver: Annealed polypropylene cone with phase plug and 12mm peak-to-peak linear displacement for exceptional vocal clarity.
- Scan-Speak 9700 Tweeter: Premium 1-inch dome tweeter with symmetrized magnetic circuits and flux stabilization rings.
- Natural Dipole Rear Radiation: Two rear-firing tweeters configured out-of-phase create a natural dipole effect for expansive soundstage depth.
- Adjustable Bass Response: Closeable reflex port allows fine-tuning for different room acoustics and placement options.
- Shaped Front Panel: Optimized geometry enables "close listening" from approximately 1.5 meters for intimate musical experiences.
The Callas Line from Opera Loudspeakers
Opera's Callas series represents the pinnacle of their speaker design, named after the legendary soprano Maria Callas. Each Callas speaker features the distinctive rear-firing dipole system: two additional tweeters arranged in a natural dipole configuration that adds depth and spatial information to the soundstage. The result is a listening experience that transcends typical box speakers, approaching the openness of panel designs while maintaining the dynamic punch of traditional cone drivers.
Three-Way Driver Topology
The Callas Diva employs a true three-way configuration with dedicated drivers for bass, midrange, and treble. The 8-inch Scan-Speak woofer features an aluminum cone and long-throw motor structure, loaded in a reflex enclosure for extended bass response. The 7-inch midrange uses an annealed polypropylene cone with phase plug, offering 12mm of linear excursion for distortion-free reproduction of vocals and instruments. The Scan-Speak 9700 tweeter handles frequencies above 2kHz with symmetrized magnetic circuits eliminating flux modulation distortion.
Natural Dipole Rear Radiation System
Behind the Callas Diva, two additional tweeters fire rearward in a natural dipole arrangement. These tweeters are wired out of phase with each other, creating a figure-eight radiation pattern that mimics the behavior of planar and electrostatic speakers. An independent crossover filter allows adjustment of the rear tweeter level to optimize the soundstage for different room acoustics and listener preferences. The result is a three-dimensional presentation with depth, width, and height that conventional forward-firing speakers struggle to achieve.
Room Adaptation and Placement
The Callas Diva offers remarkable flexibility in room placement. The shaped front panel enables nearfield listening from as close as 1.5 meters, while the adjustable rear tweeters and closeable bass port accommodate everything from small studios to larger living spaces. For rooms with reflective rear walls, reducing the rear tweeter level tames excess ambience. In well-treated spaces, running them at full level maximizes the dipole effect for concert-hall depth.
System Matching Recommendations
With 90dB sensitivity and 4 ohm nominal impedance (3.2 ohm minimum), the Callas Diva rewards quality amplification. The speakers handle up to 240 watts, making them suitable partners for everything from refined tube amplifiers to high-current solid-state designs. Consider amplifiers from Unison Research, Rogue Audio, or Primare to maximize the Callas Diva's potential.

Opera Callas Diva or Grand Callas: what is the difference?
Opera Callas Diva or Grand Callas: what is the difference?
Both are three-way, rear-ported floorstanders in Opera's Callas line, with the same 1-inch Scan-Speak 9700 tweeter, 7-inch midrange and rear-firing dipole tweeters. The Grand Callas doubles the bass section to two 8-inch long-throw woofers, adds a low frequency adjustment switch, stands 130cm tall and weighs 75kg each, and is rated for 500 watts. The Diva uses one 8-inch woofer, stands 116cm tall at 65kg, and handles 240 watts. On paper the Diva is rated slightly more sensitive (90dB against 89dB) and slightly deeper (30Hz against 32Hz at -3dB).
What amplifier does the Callas Diva need?
What amplifier does the Callas Diva need?
Opera rates the Diva at 90dB sensitivity with a 4-ohm nominal impedance that stays above 3.2 ohms, recommends amplifiers from 10 watts, and gives a maximum power of 240 watts without clipping. Get in touch with Mike and he will match an amplifier to the rest of your system.
What do the rear tweeters on the Callas Diva do?
What do the rear tweeters on the Callas Diva do?
Opera fits two additional tweeters on the back panel in what it calls a natural dipole configuration. They add energy to the reflected sound in the room without interfering with the direct sound from the front, which Opera says preserves transient accuracy while adding detail and brilliance. Because they fire backward, Opera asks for at least 10cm (about 4 inches) of clearance from the rear wall.
What is the Callas Diva Special Edition?
What is the Callas Diva Special Edition?
A dressed-up version of the same speaker. Opera's Callas Special Edition line adds a padouk wood finish, replaces the glass top with an engraved 5mm aluminum plate, fits a new aluminum connection plate on the back, and wires the speaker internally with AudioQuest cable. Opera lists the same specifications as the standard Diva. Get in touch with Mike if you are interested in the Special Edition.
