Does the Kora Phono Stage handle moving coil cartridges without a step-up transformer?
Yes. Kora derived it from an ultra-low-noise laboratory preamplifier, and it works with moving magnet, moving coil and variable reluctance cartridges without an input transformer. Kora quotes 70nV of input noise across the audio band.
What loading and gain should I set?
What loading and gain should I set?
Use your cartridge maker's figures where given. For moving magnet, Kora uses the standard 50k (47k) ohms; for moving coil, impedance is adjustable from 10 to 1,270 ohms in 10-ohm steps, and Kora says 200 ohms generally meets all requirements. Gain is a multiplier from 150 to 3,000; the manual's table shows a 0.5mV cartridge at 1,000 gives 500mV. Turn your system down before changing it.

Up to four. Each of its four inputs is individually programmed for gain, impedance, capacitance and connection type. Inputs 1 and 2 are XLR, for balanced or unbalanced cartridges, and 3 and 4 are RCA. It has both RCA and XLR outputs, usable together, connecting to a line input on your system.
What do the demagnetize and rumble functions do?
What do the demagnetize and rumble functions do?
Demagnetizing works on all four inputs at once: select it from the menu and play a record for about half an hour, a loud one working best. The rumble function cuts very low frequencies (-6dB at 7Hz), which Kora says helps with slightly warped records and with woofer movement from turntables sensitive to low frequencies.

The Phono Module is a drawer that adds one RCA phono input to the PR 140. The Phono Stage is a standalone unit with four programmable inputs, balanced XLR inputs and outputs, demagnetizing and rumble functions. It accepts 100 to 240 volts, so it runs on US power as supplied.
