Can the DAC140 drive a power amplifier directly?

No. The DAC140 has no volume control. Its setup menu carries only a click tone and a display brightness setting, with no listening level anywhere in it, so it needs a preamplifier or an integrated amplifier after it. Kora built it to sit in front of their own amplification, which is why the PR 140 preamplifier and the TB 140 integrated are the natural partners. Why choose the DAC140 over the DAC module for the PR 140?

Scale and the analog stage. The DAC module is a 0.6 kg drawer that slides into the PR 140's expansion slot and adds four inputs, two RCA and two Toslink, at the same 32-bit and 768kHz conversion. The DAC140 is a 6 kg standalone converter with nine digital inputs, its own power supply with stabilized plus and minus 240V rails, and the Square Tube valve output stage doing the analog filtering. The module is the tidy answer; the DAC140 is the one you buy for the output stage.

Does the DAC140 support DSD?

Kora lists no DSD support anywhere in its documentation; the DAC140 is specified as a PCM converter. USB-B accepts up to 384kHz and the coaxial RCA, XLR and Toslink inputs up to 192kHz at 24 bits. Everything is then upsampled internally to 768kHz and 32 bits by the AKM upsampler before it reaches the ROHM converter, so the digital filter can be gentler and the analog output filter does more of the shaping. DSD material has to be converted to PCM upstream.

What are the tubes in the DAC140 doing?

Handling the entire analog output. There are four dual triodes, two per channel, arranged around Kora's Square Tube stage: a differential stage, symmetrical by nature, feeding an output stage Kora says could be likened to an OTL push-pull. The Square Tube also performs the analog filtering, so there is no solid state filter stage after the DAC chip. The valves run on stabilized plus and minus 240V rails with regulated 12V DC heating referenced to ground.

Will the DAC140 work on US mains voltage?

Yes. The power supply is universal, taking 100 to 240 volts at 50 or 60Hz through a standard IEC socket, so it runs on US mains with the supplied cord and there is nothing to set. Kora build it in Toulouse, France, and cover it with a five year warranty.
