The Goldring 1006 Moving Magnet Cartridge is crafted for audiophiles seeking high sonic performance and the convenience of a user-replaceable stylus. Utilizing Moving Iron technology, the 1006 delivers detailed sound reproduction similar to more expensive moving coil designs while maintaining the high output and flexibility of moving magnet types. Its elliptical stylus profile ensures precise tracking and enhanced high-frequency detail, making it an excellent upgrade for budget to midrange turntables.
Key Features
- Moving Iron Technology™: Combines the detailed reproduction of moving coil cartridges with the high output of moving magnet designs.
- Elliptical Stylus Profile: Features a bonded elliptical diamond stylus for accurate tracing of high-frequency record grooves.
- Low Mass Pocan® Body: Constructed from ultra-rigid, glass-reinforced polyester to minimize moving mass and reduce unwanted vibrations.
- High Efficiency Magnetic Circuit: Finely etched mu-metal pole pieces and formerless coils provide a highly efficient magnetic circuit with extended frequency response.
- Expert Adjustment Facility: Pre-set azimuth ensures optimal channel balance and minimal cross-talk without the need for user adjustments.
Design and Build
The Goldring 1006 features a robust Pocan® body made from ultra-rigid, glass-reinforced polyester. This construction ensures that all fixed components remain securely in place, reducing unwanted vibrations that can affect sound quality. The integrated M2.5 threaded mounting holes allow for easy and secure attachment to most tonearms without the need for additional hardware. An integral mu-metal can shields the generator parts from stray magnetic fields, ensuring a clean signal path. The lightweight Pocan® body keeps the overall mass below 6.5 grams, making it compatible with a wide range of tonearms.
Performance
Equipped with an elliptical stylus, the 1006 offers superior high-frequency detail retrieval and reduced sibilance compared to traditional spherical stylus profiles. The lightweight shank provides a lower tip mass, enhancing transient response and allowing for more accurate tracing of medium-to-high frequencies. The high-efficiency magnetic circuit, featuring finely etched mu-metal pole pieces and formerless coils, ensures a higher than average output and a smooth, extended frequency response. The reduced moving mass of the iron/nickel cantilever assembly allows for faithful tracking of the record groove, minimizing distortion and mis-tracking during loud passages.
Versatility and Compatibility
The Goldring 1006 is compatible with most budget to midrange turntables, thanks to its standard fixing centers and straightforward installation process. Designed to work with standard moving magnet phono inputs of integrated amplifiers, the 1006 offers high output and flexibility for various audio setups. Whether upgrading an obsolete cartridge or enhancing an existing Goldring E Series cartridge by replacing the stylus, the 1006 provides a versatile and convenient solution for improving your vinyl playback. Its expert-adjusted azimuth ensures a proper stereo soundstage without the need for additional adjustments.

Goldring 1006, 1022GX or 1042?
Goldring 1006, 1022GX or 1042?
Goldring calls the 1006 a basic bonded elliptical that is a cinch to set up, and says the 1022GX and 1042 are in a different league. With the 1006, Goldring says sibilance on vocals can be more pronounced, where the 1022GX and 1042 handle it across the whole record.
Can I start with the 1006 and upgrade later?
Can I start with the 1006 and upgrade later?
Yes. The body is the same across the 1000 series, so the styli are interchangeable: a 1006 can later take the D12GX, D22GX or D42 stylus. Goldring says an older 1006 body causes no problem with a new stylus, because the stylus assembly carries all the moving parts and magnets. Its own replacement is the D06.
How do I mount the 1006?
How do I mount the 1006?
With M2.5 x 8mm screws and M2.5 nuts. It suits tonearms of 5 to 25g effective mass, and Goldring sets the azimuth at the factory. For alignment, Goldring gives the stylus tip as 17.3mm below and 10.2mm in front of the mounting point.
What settings does the 1006 need?
What settings does the 1006 need?
A standard moving magnet input. Goldring's current product page gives 47k ohms and 125 to 225pF (175pF nominal), counting the capacitance of your tonearm cable, and 5mV of output; its older printed booklet gives 150 to 200pF and 6.5mV. It and tracks at 1.5 to 2g, 1.75g nominal. Its elliptical stylus sits on an aluminum cantilever.
