The Dynavector P75 Mk4.1 is a compact, full-featured MM/MC phono preamplifier with gain from 40dB to 67dB, MC loading from 30 to 470 ohms, three capacitance settings, and Dynavector's patented Phono Enhancer (PE) mode. New in the Mk4.1, it runs from a USB-C Power Delivery adapter, and its internal power supply operates at 1 MHz, far above anything you can hear, so hum never gets a foothold. At 160mm wide and 500 grams, it fits anywhere but performs well beyond its size.

The P75 Mk4.1 is the natural phono stage partner for any Dynavector cartridge, but it works equally well with cartridges from other manufacturers. The PE mode is what sets it apart from the competition at this price point. Rather than amplifying voltage like a conventional phono stage, PE mode operates as a current amplifier, fundamentally changing how the cartridge interacts with the electronics. Dynavector designed it specifically to extract more from their own MC cartridges, but the results are impressive with any low-output MC. If you're running a Dynavector cartridge and want to hear what it's truly capable of, this is the phono stage to pair with it.

Key Features of the Dynavector P75 Mk4.1

  • Seven Gain Settings: 40, 42, and 46dB for MM and high-output MC, 52dB for medium-output MC, and 62, 64, and 67dB for low-output MC, all set with internal jumpers.
  • Wide Loading Range: 30, 60, 82, 100, 150, 220, and 470 ohms for MC, plus 47,000 ohms for MM, with board positions for custom resistor or capacitor values.
  • Phono Enhancer (PE) Mode: Dynavector's current-drive amplification mode presents a near-zero impedance load to the cartridge, changing the electrical relationship between cartridge and phono stage for improved dynamics and detail.
  • Four PE Coil Ranges: PE mode is set by cartridge coil resistance, with settings for 4-5, 5-10, 10-20, and 20-50 ohms.
  • USB-C PD Power Supply: New in the Mk4.1, the isolated internal supply runs from a USB-C Power Delivery adapter and operates at 1 MHz, well above the audio band. It draws about 2 watts in use.
  • Three Capacitance Settings: 180pF, 280pF, and 380pF input capacitance for fine-tuning MM cartridge response.
  • Subsonic Filter: Also new in the Mk4.1, a steep rolloff subsonic filter removes turntable rumble and the effects of warped records.
  • No Mains-Frequency Parts: The power supply contains no mains-frequency or other low-frequency components, so the hum problems common to conventional phono stages are designed out.

Phono Enhancer (PE) Mode

The P75 Mk4.1's most distinctive feature is the Phono Enhancer mode, a current-drive amplification topology that Dynavector developed specifically for MC cartridges. In conventional voltage-mode operation, the phono stage presents a load impedance to the cartridge, and the cartridge generates a voltage signal proportional to stylus motion. In PE mode, the amplifier presents a near-zero impedance load, effectively a short circuit, forcing the cartridge to generate a current signal instead. The amplifier then converts this current to voltage before the RIAA equalization stage.

The practical effect is significant: the cartridge's internal impedance becomes the only factor determining the electrical load, eliminating cable capacitance and connector resistance from the equation. This results in improved transient response, greater dynamic range, and more detailed low-level information retrieval. PE mode is set by your cartridge's DC coil resistance, with four ranges (4-5, 5-10, 10-20, and 20-50 ohms). Dynavector lists 5-10 ohms as the most common setting.

What's New in the Mk4.1

The headline change is power. The Mk4 ran from a 12V DC wall adapter; the Mk4.1 replaces it with a USB-C Power Delivery input. The P75 negotiates the power it needs from a USB-C PD 3.0 (or higher) adapter (25W minimum, 30W recommended, with a 15V at 2A profile), and the adapter is supplied by your dealer. Inside, the isolated supply switches at 1 MHz, so its noise sits far outside the audio band, and there are no mains-frequency parts to hum in the first place.

Dynavector also added a steep rolloff subsonic filter to tame rumble and warped records, and revised the gain and capacitance options. Low-output MC gain moves to 62, 64, and 67dB, and MM capacitance moves to 180, 280, and 380pF. The P75 ships set for low-output MC at 64dB and 100 ohms, which Dynavector says suits over 95% of low-output moving coils.

Versatile Loading and Gain Configuration

The P75 Mk4.1 accommodates virtually any phono cartridge through its comprehensive loading options. MM cartridges run at the standard 47k ohm impedance with selectable capacitance (180, 280, or 380pF) to fine-tune high-frequency response. Remember to add your tonearm and interconnect capacitance, which can be surprisingly high. MC cartridges can be loaded from 30 to 470 ohms in conventional voltage mode, or operated in PE mode for current-drive amplification. Gain is adjustable from 40dB (suitable for high-output cartridges) to 67dB (for the lowest-output MC designs like Dynavector's 0.26mV Te Kaitora Rua). All settings are made with internal jumpers, no soldering needed. Always power down before changing them.
