The Unison Research Unico Primo is a hybrid integrated amplifier that pairs a Class A ECC83 triode tube input stage with a Dynamic Class A MOSFET output stage, delivering more than 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms. It is the entry point to the Unico line, hand-built in Treviso, Italy, and it brings the tonal warmth of a tube preamp to the grip and reliability of solid-state power. The version we sell ships with the moving-magnet/moving-coil phono board factory-installed, so a turntable plugs straight in.

Unison Research calls the Unico Primo's output stage "Dynamic Class A." It is not pure Class A, and it does not run hot the way a pure Class A amplifier would, but it holds the output devices in their most linear region for the bulk of normal listening. Design and Build Quality

The Unico Primo is built around a large in-house toroidal transformer, Italian-made Itelcond aluminum capacitors, and copper internal wiring. Unison Research winds its own transformers in Treviso and designates each one for a specific model, so nothing here is an off-the-rack part. The slim chassis hides real mass: at 14 kg the amplifier feels planted, and louvers in the top panel let it shed heat so it runs cooler than most solid-state integrateds at idle.

The front is a thick brushed-aluminum faceplate carrying two oversize knobs, a rotary source selector and a volume control on a motorized Alps potentiometer, with a turned wood oval bearing the Unison Research logo. The knurled volume action is one of the more satisfying tactile details at this price. The standard finish is silver, with black available as a special order.

Because the only active gain stage is the ECC83 triode, the Unico Primo carries a trace of tube character without the obvious coloration that puts some listeners off valve amplifiers.
