REL Planar PL-2 Subwoofer

The REL Planar PL-2 is a wall-mountable subwoofer from REL Acoustics, built around a cabinet just 5.7 inches deep, plus 1.5 inches for the wall bracket. An 8 inch FlatPiston active driver works with a rear-firing 10 inch passive radiator, driven by a 550 watt Class D amplifier and reaching down to 24 Hz in-room.

REL's Airship Direct wireless system is built in, with the receiver pre-installed in a concealed rear-panel compartment and pre-paired at the factory. The PL-2 is the larger of the two Planar models, and compared with the PL-1, REL says it delivers greater output, deeper extension, and more physical scale.

The Planar PL-2 Was Built for the Wall

Traditional subwoofers often demand significant floor space to produce deep, powerful bass. Planar takes a different approach: it works in close relationship with the wall behind it, using boundary effect coupling to make the wall part of the acoustic system, from a cabinet that occupies little or no floor space. The passive radiator fires toward the wall, and REL's VIMAR (Vibration Isolation Material and Resonance Control) system, built into the mounting brackets, reduces the transfer of unwanted energy into the wall while preserving the speed of the bass.

8 Inch FlatPiston Driver

The active driver is a new 8 inch (205 mm) FlatPiston long-throw unit on a steel chassis, developed exclusively for Planar. Getting deep, powerful bass from a driver barely 80 mm deep took a new approach to excursion, rigidity, and control. Behind it, a specially tuned 10 inch (250 mm) long-stroke passive radiator fires toward the wall and reinforces the low-frequency output through boundary effect coupling.

550 Watt Pure Class D Amplifier

The PL-2 is powered by a 550 watt Pure Class D amplifier, a latest-generation design proven across thousands of REL subwoofers. It combines high current delivery with long-term reliability, and REL describes it as efficient and cool-running while delivering the scale and impact that both music and theater demand.

Built-In Airship Direct Wireless

The PL-2 includes REL's Airship Direct wireless technology as an integrated part of the design. REL lists the Airship Direct wireless system in the box, with the compact receiver already installed in a concealed rear-panel compartment and pre-paired at the factory. There are no apps and no configuration: connect power, position the PL-2, and it plays without a signal cable across the room.

Inputs for Two-Channel and Cinema

REL's High Level connection feeds the PL-2 through a Neutrik Speakon input with the same signal that goes to your main speakers, for integration across the whole system. A low level RCA input and a dedicated LFE RCA input cover preamp and home theater processor connections. For dual-use music and theater systems, REL notes that the High Level and LFE inputs can operate simultaneously, and its all-analog PerfectFilter circuitry avoids unnecessary digital processing.

On the Wall or Close to It

The PL-2 ships with a wall mounting template, brackets and hardware. Where wall mounting is not an option, REL's optional Planar Cart holds it close to the wall, which is where Planar is designed to work. Its placement options also open up rear-wall placement and multi-subwoofer setups.

Two Lacquer Finishes and Two Grille Looks

The PL-2 comes in Piano Black or Gloss White lacquer, with radiused edges, recessed controls, and concealed cable management. A cloth grille is included, and the optional Premium Wood Grille is available for either finish.
