REL Planar PL-1 Subwoofer

The REL Planar PL-1 is a wall-mountable subwoofer from REL Acoustics, built around a cabinet just 5.7 inches deep, plus 1.5 inches for the wall bracket. Dual 6.5 inch FibreAlloy long-throw active drivers work with a rear-firing 10 inch FibreAlloy passive radiator, powered by a 300 watt Class D amplifier and reaching down to 31 Hz in-room.

REL's Airship Direct wireless system is built in, with the receiver pre-installed in a concealed rear-panel compartment and pre-paired at the factory. The PL-1 is the smaller of the two Planar models, and REL calls it the Swiss Army Knife of its subwoofers: at home in music systems, compact theaters, unconventional placements, and even center-channel bass reinforcement.

The Planar PL-1 Was Built for the Wall

Traditional subwoofers often demand floor space and careful placement. Planar takes a different approach: it is designed to work in close relationship with the wall behind it, using boundary effect coupling to produce deep, articulate bass from a cabinet only inches deep. The passive radiator fires toward the wall, and REL's VIMAR (Vibration Isolation Material and Resonance Control) system, built into the mounting brackets, reduces the transfer of unwanted energy into the wall while preserving the speed of the bass.

Dual 6.5 Inch FibreAlloy Active Drivers

The PL-1 uses twin 6.5 inch (165 mm) FibreAlloy long-throw drivers on steel chassis, developed from proven REL driver platforms. Working together, the two drivers increase surface area and impact while keeping the speed, articulation and control REL is known for. Behind them, the specially tuned 10 inch (250 mm) passive radiator has over 45 mm of excursion and reinforces the low-frequency output through its coupling with the wall.

300 Watt Pure Class D Amplifier

The amplifier is a 300 watt Pure Class D design, proven across thousands of REL subwoofers. REL rates it conservatively at 300 watts and says it delivers substantially greater real-world output under demanding conditions, while staying efficient and cool-running for both music and theater systems.

Built-In Airship Direct Wireless

The PL-1 includes REL's Airship Direct wireless technology as an integrated part of the design. REL lists the Airship Direct wireless system in the box, with the compact receiver already installed in a concealed rear-panel compartment and pre-paired at the factory. There are no apps and no configuration: connect power, position the PL-1, and it plays without a signal cable across the room.

Inputs for Two-Channel and Cinema

REL's High Level connection feeds the PL-1 through a Neutrik Speakon input with the same signal that goes to your main speakers, for a unified presentation with the mains. A low level RCA input and a dedicated LFE RCA input cover preamp and home theater processor connections, and REL's all-analog PerfectFilter circuitry avoids unnecessary digital processing.

On the Wall or Close to It

The PL-1 ships with a wall mounting template, brackets and hardware. Where wall mounting is not an option, REL's optional Planar Cart holds it close to the wall, which is where Planar is designed to work.

Two Lacquer Finishes and Two Grille Looks

The PL-1 comes in Piano Black or Gloss White lacquer, with recessed controls and concealed cable management. A cloth grille is included, and the optional Premium Wood Grille is available for either finish.
