The Unison Research Unico DM V2 is a dual-mono hybrid power amplifier that delivers 220 watts per channel into 8 ohms through a proprietary A.S.H.A. (Analog Synchronized Hybrid Amplification) circuit topology. Developed in-house by Unison Research's engineering team in Italy, A.S.H.A. eliminates the crossover distortion that has plagued Class AB designs for decades while maintaining their power efficiency. The result is a 2-ohm-stable amplifier with twin 750 VA toroidal transformers, bridgeable to 650 watts mono, that preserves harmonic detail from the first watt to full output.

Key Features of the Unico DM V2

  • A.S.H.A. Technology (Analog Synchronized Hybrid Amplification): Proprietary Leader/Follower MOSFET circuit eliminates crossover distortion entirely, delivering Class A signal purity with Class AB power efficiency.
  • Dual-Mono Design with Twin 750 VA Transformers: Each channel has its own encapsulated, potted, and shielded toroidal power transformer, completely isolating left and right signal paths for maximum channel separation.
  • Gold Lion ECC82/12AU7 Tube Input Stage: Two matched Gold Lion tubes operating in pure Class A define the amplifier's sonic character with speed, fine detail, and a naturally open presentation.
  • Three Parallel MOSFET Output Pairs: The complementary push-pull output stage uses three paralleled MOSFET pairs per channel for high current delivery and control over difficult speaker loads.
  • 220W/8Ω Stereo, 650W Mono Bridged: Switchable between stereo and bridged mono operation via rear toggle, with power output scaling from 220W at 8 ohms to 650W in mono for bi-amp or mono configurations.
  • 2-Ohm Stable: Tested and stable into loads as low as 2 ohms, with 370W continuous and 670W peak into 2Ω. No current limiting, no thermal shutdown, just clean power into whatever you connect.
  • Intelligent Protection System: Microprocessor-controlled current monitoring blinks the front-panel LEDs when high power is being delivered to the speakers. The protection doesn't alter the signal path or affect sound quality.
  • Balanced XLR and Unbalanced RCA Inputs: Both balanced and unbalanced connections for flexibility with any preamplifier, including the Unico Pre V2.
  • 4+4 Binding Posts for Bi-Wiring: Dual sets of high-quality binding posts per channel support bi-wiring configurations for speakers with separate bass and treble terminals.
  • Standard 17-Inch Chassis: Despite the power inside, the DM V2 fits standard 17-inch racks and shelving. No oversized footprint.

A.S.H.A.: From Dynamic Class A to Analog Synchronized Hybrid Amplification

In 1999, Unison Research introduced Dynamic Class A, a biasing method that kept output transistors partially conducting at all times rather than switching them fully off. This significantly reduced crossover distortion compared to standard Class AB, but didn't eliminate it entirely. Twenty-seven years later, the engineering team revisited the problem from the ground up.

A.S.H.A. (Analog Synchronized Hybrid Amplification) takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of two output transistors trading control of the signal back and forth (the source of crossover distortion in every Class AB amplifier), A.S.H.A. designates one MOSFET as the "Leader" and the other as the "Follower." The Leader MOSFET operates in pure Class A and maintains control of the output signal for the entire waveform period, both positive and negative. It never hands off. The Follower MOSFET, biased in Class AB, handles the heavy current delivery during the negative half-cycle while the Leader continues steering the voltage.

This synchronized relationship is the key. Because the Leader never relinquishes control of the signal, there is no handoff between transistors, which means there is no crossover distortion. Period. The circuit achieves the signal purity of a pure Class A amplifier with the thermal efficiency and power output of Class AB. Power dissipation stays comparable to conventional Class AB designs, so the DM V2 runs warm but doesn't require the massive heatsinking or ventilation that pure Class A amplifiers demand.

What Zero Crossover Distortion Sounds Like

The practical consequence of A.S.H.A. shows up in two places most conventional amplifiers struggle. At low volume, where Class AB designs typically lose bass definition and detail as the output transistors hover near their switching threshold, the DM V2 maintains full frequency response. Bass stays present and defined even at background listening levels because the Leader MOSFET is always conducting, always in control. At high volume, where crossover artifacts in conventional amplifiers accumulate and mask fine detail, the DM V2's output remains linear. Musical detail that usually disappears as you push the volume stays vivid and resolved. The amplifier's distortion profile doesn't shift with power level, and that linearity is something you hear immediately: there's no strain, no hardening, no point where the sound starts to compress.

Dual-Mono Power Supply

Each channel of the DM V2 is fed by its own dedicated 750 VA toroidal transformer, encapsulated, potted, and shielded to minimize electromagnetic interference between the power supply and the sensitive audio circuits. This true dual-mono architecture means the two channels share nothing except the chassis and the mains cable. When switched to bridged mono operation, the two power supplies work in parallel, creating a combined energy reserve that supports sustained output of 650 watts into 8 ohms and 650 watts into 4 ohms.

Three-Stage Amplification

The DM V2's signal path is organized into three distinct stages. The input stage is a pure Class A circuit using two Gold Lion ECC82/12AU7 dual-triode valves, responsible for the speed, fine detail, and natural harmonic structure that set the amplifier's sonic signature. Even in a dedicated power amplifier, this tube input stage matters because the preamplifier signal still needs amplification before reaching the output devices. Unison Research uses valves here deliberately: the solid linearity and warmth they bring to the critical first gain stage carries through the entire signal chain. The second stage is a solid-state adapter circuit that conditions the signal for the output MOSFETs. The output stage uses three complementary MOSFET pairs per channel in the A.S.H.A. configuration, chosen for their tube-like transfer characteristics and ability to deliver high current into low-impedance loads.

Stereo and Bridged Mono Operation

A rear-panel toggle switch allows the DM V2 to operate in stereo mode (220W/8Ω, 340W/4Ω, 370W/2Ω) or bridged mono mode (650W/8Ω, 650W/4Ω). In stereo, the amplifier's two channels drive a pair of speakers from a single chassis. In mono, both channels combine to drive a single speaker with dramatically increased power and current capability. A pair of DM V2 amplifiers in mono configuration creates a system capable of controlling the most demanding loudspeakers, including large planars like the Magnepan LRS+ and power-hungry floorstanding designs.

Unico DM V2 Connectivity and Speaker Integration

The DM V2 accepts signals through both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, making it compatible with any preamplifier. The natural companion is the Unico Pre V2, which provides balanced XLR outputs and a 12V trigger signal for synchronized power-on. Speaker connections use four high-quality binding posts per channel (eight total), supporting both standard and bi-wired speaker configurations. The trigger input and output terminals allow daisy-chaining power sequencing across multiple components.

Italian Design and Build Quality

Handcrafted in Dosson di Casier, Italy, by A.R.I.A. srl, the Unico DM V2 introduces a completely renewed design language for the Unico product family. The front panel is machined from a solid 15mm-thick aluminum block, with distinctive wooden inserts and a copper accent strip. The circular Unison Research logo doubles as the power button. The top panel features a diamond-shaped ventilation grille flanked by horizontal cooling slots, providing airflow for the high-power output stage beneath. Available in Midnight Black and Velvet Gold finishes, the DM V2 fits into a standard 17-inch width and is designed to sit alongside the Pre V2 as a visually and sonically matched separates system.

The Unico Line: A.S.H.A. Across the Range

The DM V2 and Pre V2 are the first products in the new Unico generation, but A.S.H.A. technology won't stay exclusive to the flagship separates. Unison Research is redesigning the entire Unico integrated amplifier lineup with A.S.H.A., starting with three new models: a 100-watt, a 180-watt, and a 280-watt integrated, all featuring the same Leader/Follower MOSFET topology. The first two are expected to begin production in Q3 2026, with the larger model following in early 2027. Each will include a slot for an optional streaming board supporting QOBUZ Connect, Tidal Connect, Spotify Connect, and Roon Ready via DLNA. A new Unico DS (Digital Streaming) source component combining a DAC, CD player, and streamer with a valve output stage is also in development.
