The Acoustic Energy AE1 Active loudspeakers are a compact but fiercely capable pair of standmount monitors that bypass the need for external amplification. Built on the design legacy of the original AE1 and enhanced with decades of R&D in active monitoring, these speakers combine all-analogue dual-mono Class A/B amplification, advanced pure piston driver technology, and rugged British cabinet design into a self-powered system that punches far above its size and price point.

Active Speaker Performance and Design
The AE1 Active is an all-analogue, bi-amped two-way loudspeaker where every decision was made in pursuit of performance. Unlike many active speakers that rely on Class D or DSP trickery, the AE1 Active sticks to dual 50W linear Class A/B amps per speaker—one for the mid/bass driver and one for the tweeter. This setup ensures exacting amplifier-driver integration and eliminates the losses and coloration typically introduced by passive crossovers or long speaker cable runs.
The fifth-generation 125mm ceramic aluminium cone acts as a true piston throughout its range, avoiding the flex and break-up nodes common in paper or polymer designs. It’s fast, controlled, and transparent, delivering low-frequency grip with startling impact. Mated to a bespoke 27mm aluminium dome tweeter set in Acoustic Energy’s Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide, the AE1 Active produces a wide and stable stereo image with precise treble extension and tonal balance. The crossover is a 4th order Linkwitz-Riley at 3.5kHz, preserving phase integrity between drivers.
Flexible Connectivity for HiFi Systems
With both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, the AE1 Active adapts easily to modern HiFi chains, whether fed from a streamer, DAC, preamp, or interface. Each speaker includes an analogue volume control for setups lacking level control on the source side. And thanks to the defeatable HF and LF trim controls, you can fine-tune for stand placement, boundary proximity, or room reflections without digital EQ or software bloat. Plug in, dial in, and play.
Studio-Tough Cabinet Engineering
The cabinet follows Acoustic Energy’s proven formula: heavy 18mm MDF, full internal bracing, targeted damping panels, and a rear slot port for enhanced airflow without wind noise. The AE1 Active is the first AE1 to feature a slot-loaded reflex port, delivering improved low-frequency extension and lower turbulence even at higher SPLs. Magnetic slim-fit cloth grilles provide a clean aesthetic, but most owners leave them off to admire the meticulously machined drivers.
The Listening Room Difference
The Listening Room is a third-generation, family-owned business where every system is treated like a bespoke installation. Owner Mike Hoatson is directly involved in nearly every sale—from phone consultations to cross-country delivery and in-home setup. Whether you’re in New England or the Gulf Coast, Mike's van has probably already passed through your town with another hand-delivered system. It’s not just about shipping, it’s about making sure everything sounds right.
