The 10XA is the third Dynavector to undergo the Special Magnetic Annealing process and is the entry level model in the range. It uses a hardened aluminium cantilever and nude diamond Shibata III line contact stylus as per the MkII before it, in a red anodised body that weighs 7.5 grams and will work with the vast majority of tonearms. The result is a cartridge that is superior in detail, dynamics, and musical satisfaction to its predecessor and well-respected rivals at this price point.

The Dynavector DV-10X5A is the latest evolution of Dynavector's entry-level moving coil cartridge, featuring an entirely new magnetic circuit with Special Magnetic Annealing for lower distortion and tighter channel separation. Available in low output (0.3mV) and high output (2.5mV) versions, it retains the Shibata III line-contact stylus and hardened aluminum cantilever that made the 10X5 Mk2 a favorite, while adding measurable improvements to the generator assembly.
We added the 10X5A to our Dynavector lineup because it addresses the one area where the already-excellent 10X5 Mk2 had room to grow: the magnetic circuit. Dynavector's Special Magnetic Annealing process optimizes the magnetic field at a molecular level, and the result is audible in the form of better dynamics and more natural tonal balance. If you're stepping up from a moving magnet cartridge, the high-output 10X5A is one of the simplest upgrades available: plug it into your existing MM phono input and you're running.
Key Features of the Dynavector DV-10X5A
- Special Magnetic Annealing: Newly developed process optimizes the magnetic circuit for reduced distortion and improved linearity across the frequency range
- Shibata III Line-Contact Stylus: Nude diamond stylus with extended groove contact for precise tracking, reduced record wear, and detailed high-frequency retrieval
- Dual Output Options: Low output (0.3mV) for dedicated MC stages or high output (2.5mV) for standard MM phono inputs
- Softened Magnetism: Neodymium magnets with controlled field geometry reduce eddy currents and hysteresis in the generator
- New Magnetic Circuit: Entirely redesigned generator assembly delivers improved dynamics and tonal accuracy over the 10X5 Mk2
- Hardened Aluminum Cantilever: 6mm aluminum pipe cantilever provides rigidity and fast transient response
- Machined Aluminum Body: Rigid head block construction resists resonance and ensures consistent alignment
- Wide Tonearm Compatibility: 7.5g weight and 12mm/N compliance suit most medium-mass tonearms
What Changed from the DV-10X5 Mk2
The DV-10X5A represents a meaningful step forward from the well-regarded 10X5 Mk2. The headline change is the entirely new magnetic circuit incorporating Dynavector's Special Magnetic Annealing technology. This process treats the magnetic materials at a molecular level to achieve more uniform and linear magnetic field behavior. The practical result is lower distortion throughout the output range and improved dynamic contrast. The stylus, cantilever, and body design carry over from the Mk2, so the mechanical tracking performance remains identical. If you already own a 10X5 Mk2, the 10X5A is a direct replacement that fits the same headshell and works with the same tonearm settings.
Shibata III Stylus Profile
Both the 10X5A and its predecessor use Dynavector's Shibata III line-contact diamond stylus. The Shibata profile traces a longer, narrower contact patch along the groove wall compared to elliptical or conical shapes. This geometry reads more of the groove modulation that contains high-frequency detail while distributing tracking force over a larger area, reducing both distortion and vinyl wear. The nude-mounted diamond sits on a hardened 6mm aluminum pipe cantilever that balances rigidity with the compliance needed for stable tracking at the recommended 2.0g force.
Special Magnetic Annealing Technology
Dynavector's Special Magnetic Annealing is a heat treatment process applied to the magnetic circuit components before assembly. By carefully controlling the temperature cycle, the magnetic domains within the neodymium magnets are aligned more uniformly than standard magnetization allows. This reduces the nonlinear behavior that produces harmonic and intermodulation distortion in the generator. Combined with Dynavector's existing Softened Magnetism approach to field geometry, the 10X5A achieves lower measured distortion without sacrificing output level or dynamic range.
Low Output and High Output Configurations
The DV-10X5A is available in two output configurations. The low output version produces 0.3mV at 1kHz/5cm/sec, requiring a dedicated MC phono preamplifier or step-up transformer. Its 32-ohm impedance works well with most MC-capable phono stages loaded at 100 ohms or higher. The high output version produces 2.5mV with 150-ohm impedance, compatible with any moving magnet phono input loaded at 1,000 ohms or higher. Both share identical mechanical specifications and the same Shibata III stylus assembly.
