This is music-making as a joyous activity, a communication of emotion that sits way above simple electro-mechanical reproduction. The all-important midrange frequencies are delivered with terrific punch and realism. This has many of the characteristics of a truly high end device at considerably less expense. It will give you a taste of the Champagne lifestyle on a Prosecco budget. It sounds like a Dynavector, which to me is an excellent thing, seems well built and actually looks good when on the tonearm. All in all, a very fine device and one that is very easy to recommend.

The Dynavector DV-10X5 Mk2 is a high-output moving coil cartridge that delivers the resolution and dynamics of MC design without requiring a dedicated MC phono stage. Available in both low output (0.3mV) and high output (2.5mV) configurations, it pairs Dynavector's proprietary magnetic flux damping and softened magnetism technologies with a nude Shibata III line-contact stylus for tracking precision that punches well above its $800 price point.
Dynavector has been building moving coil cartridges in Japan since 1975, and the 10X5 Mk2 is the entry point to their lineup. We carry the full Dynavector range because these cartridges consistently deliver more musical detail and better tracking than anything else at their respective price points. The 10X5 Mk2 is particularly versatile: the high-output version works directly into any MM phono input, making it an ideal upgrade path from a factory-fitted cartridge without changing any other equipment.
Key Features of the Dynavector DV-10X5 Mk2
- Shibata III Line-Contact Stylus: Nude diamond stylus with extended contact area for superior groove tracing, reduced record wear, and detailed high-frequency retrieval
- Dual Output Options: Available in low output (0.3mV) for dedicated MC phono stages or high output (2.5mV) for standard MM phono inputs
- Magnetic Flux Damper: Dynavector's proprietary technology absorbs stray magnetic flux to reduce distortion and improve channel separation
- Softened Magnetism: Carefully controlled magnetic field geometry reduces eddy currents and hysteresis effects in the generator assembly
- Powerful Neodymium Magnets: High-energy magnets deliver strong signal output with refined coil winding technology
- Hardened Aluminum Cantilever: 6mm hardened aluminum pipe cantilever provides rigidity and fast transient response
- Rigid Aluminum Body: Machined red aluminum head block resists resonance and ensures precise alignment in any standard headshell
- Wide Compatibility: 7.5g weight and 12mm/N compliance suit most medium-mass tonearms
Dynavector's Moving Coil Heritage
Founded in 1975 by Dr. Noboru Tominari, Dynavector pioneered many of the technologies now standard in moving coil cartridge design. The company's approach centers on controlling the magnetic environment around the generator assembly. Where most manufacturers treat the magnet and coil as a simple transducer, Dynavector engineers the entire magnetic circuit to minimize interference, stray flux, and nonlinear behavior. The DV-10X5 Mk2 brings these techniques, previously reserved for their higher-end models, into an accessible price range.
Shibata III Stylus and Tracking Performance
The DV-10X5 Mk2 uses a nude Shibata III line-contact diamond stylus, a significant upgrade from the elliptical styli found on most cartridges at this price. The Shibata profile makes contact with a longer, narrower area of the groove wall compared to conical or elliptical shapes, which translates to better high-frequency tracing, lower distortion, and reduced record wear over time. Combined with the hardened 6mm aluminum cantilever, the stylus assembly delivers fast, controlled transients and stable tracking across the full frequency range at the recommended 2.0g tracking force.
Flux Damping and Softened Magnetism
Two proprietary Dynavector technologies set the 10X5 Mk2 apart from typical cartridges in its class. The magnetic flux damper absorbs stray magnetic energy that would otherwise create distortion and degrade channel separation. Softened magnetism controls the magnetic field geometry to reduce eddy currents and hysteresis effects within the generator. Together, these technologies result in a cleaner, more focused signal with better separation between channels, specified at greater than 25dB at 1kHz.
Low Output and High Output Configurations
The DV-10X5 Mk2 is available in two output versions. The low output model produces 0.3mV, designed for use with dedicated MC phono preamplifiers or step-up transformers that can provide the additional gain needed for moving coil cartridges. The high output model produces 2.5mV, which is compatible with standard moving magnet phono inputs found on most integrated amplifiers and phono stages. Both versions use the same generator design and stylus assembly, so the sonic character is consistent across configurations. The high output version is particularly popular as an upgrade from MM cartridges since it requires no changes to existing phono amplification.

I found that the DV-10X5 MkII Low is as musically satisfying as its high output stablemate. But then it goes on to give a little more still, the closer to ten tenths that we audiophiles crave. That it does so for the same money as the high output version makes it a no-brainer, as long as we have a quality moving coil phono stage to hand. Highly recommended.
