What kind of amplifier does the LRS+ need?
What kind of amplifier does the LRS+ need?
A current-capable one. The LRS+ is 86dB sensitive into a 4 ohm load, so it is not a hard load in the sense of dips and phase angles, but it does want an amplifier that holds up as impedance falls rather than one that only looks good on paper at 8 ohms. Watts alone are the wrong measure; look for a design whose power rises meaningfully into 4 ohms. The Rogue Sphinx v3 and the Cambridge Audio CXA81 MK II are both sensible starting points at this level.

How far from the wall and how far apart should the LRS+ go?
Magnepan asks for two feet or more between the panel and the wall behind it, and sets the spacing between the two speakers at roughly 60 percent of your listening distance. Magnepan's own fine tuning section then says to begin experimenting at approximately three feet from the wall. The LRS+ is a dipole, so the rear wave needs room before it folds back into the direct sound. Magnepan also notes that a very reflective room can tip the balance bright, since the quasi-ribbon tweeter is efficient at spreading energy.

Radiating area. In Mike's own line breakdown the LRS+ is a simple quasi-ribbon two-way and the Magnepan .7 adds more surface area to the same idea. More diaphragm moving the same air means more output before the panel works hard, more weight in the lower midrange, and a bigger sense of scale. Both stay two-way quasi-ribbon designs; the step up to a true ribbon tweeter does not arrive until the 2.7i.

Should I bypass the fuses in the LRS+?
No. Magnepan is direct about this: the terminal plate carries a maximum fuse value of 2.5 amps, type 3AG, normal or fast blow, and the speakers ship with 2.5 amp fuses fitted. Never bypass them, never go above 3 amps, and never fit a slow-blow fuse. Magnepan's own destruct testing found it is virtually impossible to burn out the tweeters as long as those limits are respected, which is the whole point of the fuse being there.

What does quasi-ribbon mean?
It describes how the conductor is attached. In a quasi-ribbon driver, thin aluminum foil strips are bonded to a Mylar film diaphragm and act as the voice coil, so the foil and the film move as one. In a true ribbon the foil is the diaphragm, suspended freely in the magnetic field with no substrate behind it. The LRS+ is quasi-ribbon throughout, in a two-way arrangement: one sheet of Mylar carrying two separate voice coils with a two-way crossover between them.
