The Chord Electronics Mojo 2 is a pocket-sized DAC and headphone amplifier that sounds better than desktop units costing twice as much. Rob Watts' custom FPGA runs the same Pulse Array architecture found in Chord's larger DACs, but adds something none of them have: a lossless UHD DSP that lets you shape the tonal balance without touching the signal integrity. Four What Hi-Fi? Best DAC awards in a row (2022-2025), and it fits in your palm.

Key Features of the Chord Electronics Mojo 2

  • Custom-coded Xilinx Artix 7 FPGA with Pulse Array DAC and WTA filter, designed from scratch by Rob Watts
  • UHD DSP (lossless digital tone control) adjusts bass and treble without any signal degradation, a world first
  • Four digital inputs: USB-C (switchable data/charging), Micro USB (to 768kHz), coaxial via 3.5mm (to 768kHz), and optical (to 96kHz)
  • Dual headphone outputs: 3.5mm and 4.4mm Pentaconn balanced
  • 600mW into 30 ohms with 0.06-ohm output impedance, drives everything from sensitive IEMs to full-size planars
  • Four digital filters and crossfeed control for headphone staging
  • Improved battery management with 75% reduction in power loss and faster USB-C charging
  • CNC-machined aircraft-grade aluminum chassis with four polycarbonate control spheres

UHD DSP: Lossless Tone Control

The Mojo 2's headline feature is its UHD DSP, a digital tone control system that operates entirely within the FPGA's processing chain. Unlike analog tone controls that introduce distortion and phase shift, the UHD DSP adjusts frequency response mathematically before the signal reaches the Pulse Array DAC. You can boost or cut bass and treble in precise increments to compensate for headphone voicing, room acoustics when used as a source DAC, or personal preference. The key word is "lossless": the adjustments happen at full bit depth with no degradation to the audio signal.

Chord Electronics Mojo 2 Connectivity

Four digital inputs cover every portable and desktop scenario. The USB-C port doubles as data input and charging, switchable via the menu system so you can charge from one source while playing music from another. Micro USB handles hi-res audio up to 768kHz PCM for legacy cable compatibility. The 3.5mm coaxial input accepts up to 768kHz for connection to digital transports and streamers. Optical handles up to 96kHz for TV and CD player connections. On the output side, dual headphone jacks (3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm Pentaconn balanced) deliver up to 600mW into 30 ohms with a 0.06-ohm output impedance that won't color the sound of multi-driver IEMs.

Menu System and Controls

Four polycarbonate spheres on the front panel control power, volume, input selection, and the new menu system accessed via the fourth button. The menu provides access to the UHD DSP tone controls, mute, crossfeed settings, button lock for pocket use, and USB-C charging mode. The color-coded system is consistent across Chord's lineup: if you've used a Hugo 2 or Qutest, you'll recognize the volume color progression from red (low) through the spectrum to white (line level).

Battery and Portable Use

The Mojo 2's battery management is a significant upgrade over the original Mojo. A 75% reduction in power loss and 9% capacity gain extend listening time, while faster USB-C charging gets you back to music sooner. The switchable USB-C port means you can charge while listening from a different input without interference. At 185 grams and roughly the size of a deck of cards (83mm x 62mm x 23mm), the Mojo 2 goes anywhere. Paired with a smartphone via USB-C OTG, it replaces the phone's DAC entirely.

Going Wireless with Poly

The Poly streaming module attaches directly to the Mojo 2 and adds Wi-Fi streaming, Roon Ready playback, AirPlay, Bluetooth, and dual microSD card slots for local file storage. The combination turns Mojo 2 into a self-contained wireless music player that streams from your network or plays from local files without a phone or computer in the chain.

Where Mojo 2 Fits in the Chord Lineup

Mojo 2 is Chord's entry point to FPGA-based audio. For listeners who want more power, longer battery life, and a desktop-ready feature set, the Hugo 2 steps up with 1,050mW output, a 49,152-tap filter (versus Mojo 2's shorter filter), RCA line outputs, and a remote control. The Qutest takes the same FPGA platform into a pure DAC format for system integration without headphone duties.
