The AVM Ovation PH 8.3 is a modular tube phono preamplifier with up to four inputs. You choose a plug-in module for each input: MC XLR balanced, MC RCA or MM RCA. Equalization is analog and fully passive, with six equalization curves, and the included RC PH remote sets gain, load and curve.
The PH 8.3 is the phono stage of AVM's Ovation line. AVM's 2026 overview lists it as ready to play with a minimum of one PH input card, which is sold separately.
Key Features of the AVM Ovation PH 8.3
- Up to Four Inputs: Four slots for plug-in input modules: MC XLR balanced, MC RCA and MM RCA.
- Fully Passive Equalization: Analog, fully passive phono equalization with six curves: RIAA, TELDEC, NARTB, EMI, COLUMBIA and DECCA.
- Adjustable Gain and Load: Sensitivity in five steps from -10 to +10 dB, MC impedance from 30 to 1000 ohms, MM capacitance from 50 to 400 pF.
- Subsonic Filter and Mono: A switchable 30 Hz, 12 dB/octave subsonic filter, and mono/stereo switching with phase inversion.
- RCA and XLR Outputs: RCA and XLR outputs, up to 7 V and 14 V.
- Turntable Power Supply: A galvanically isolated 15 V / 1.5 A supply for a turntable.
- RC PH Remote and OLED Display: Gain, equalization curve and load from the included RC PH remote, shown on the OLED display.
How Do the PH 8.3 Input Modules Work?
The PH 8.3 takes up to four plug-in input modules, and you choose each one: MC XLR balanced, MC RCA or MM RCA. AVM's 2026 overview lists the PH 8.3 as ready to play with a minimum of one PH input card, at extra charge, so plan at least one module with the base unit. The MC phono module (balanced XLR or unbalanced RCA) and the MM phono module are listed separately.
The moving-coil cards (RCA and XLR) adjust sensitivity in five steps from 55 to 550 µV and impedance in six steps from 30 to 1000 ohms. The moving-magnet card adjusts sensitivity from 0.5 to 5 mV and capacitance in six steps from 50 to 400 pF. AVM rates the signal-to-noise ratio at 77 dB(A) for MC and 85 dB(A) for MM.

Six Equalization Curves
Equalization in the PH 8.3 is analog and fully passive. Beyond RIAA, it offers TELDEC, NARTB, EMI, COLUMBIA and DECCA curves, all for LPs at 33 1/3 rpm. AVM lists each curve's corner frequencies and time constants; RIAA, for example, is 50 Hz, 500 Hz and 2120 Hz, which corresponds to 3180 µs, 318 µs and 75 µs.
A switchable subsonic filter works at 30 Hz with 12 dB per octave, and the PH 8.3 switches between mono and stereo, including phase inversion. Overall sensitivity is adjustable from -10 to +10 dB in 5 dB steps.
Outputs, Turntable Supply and Control
The PH 8.3 has RCA outputs with a 50-ohm output impedance and up to 7 V, and XLR outputs with a 100-ohm output impedance and up to 14 V. A galvanically isolated 15 V / 1.5 A supply can power a turntable, and AVM's overview names its ROTATION turntables for it.
AVM credits the PH 8.3's elaborate power supply with minimal noise and maximum dynamics. The included RC PH remote adjusts gain, equalization curve and load, and the OLED display shows the settings. Extensive menu functions cover input sensitivity and more.
