AVM Ovation AS XL Streaming Integrated Amplifier

The AVM Ovation AS XL is the flagship streaming integrated amplifier of AVM's Ovation S line: a Class A/AB power amplifier rated at 2 x 550 W into 4 ohms, AVM's X-Stream Engine and the S-DAC with ESS 9038 PRO converters, in a 50 kg aluminum enclosure. A 1,000 VA toroidal transformer and 24 MOSFETs per channel drive the speakers, and HDMI ARC brings in the TV.

The name XL is the Roman numeral for 40, marking four decades of AVM amplifier craftsmanship. The AS XL is designed and built at AVM's factory in Malsch, Germany.

What Powers the AS XL?

The power amplifier works in Class A/AB and is rated at 2 x 550 W into 4 ohms and 2 x 250 W into 8 ohms in AVM's technical data. A low-stray 1,000 VA toroidal transformer with separate windings, 24 high-performance MOSFETs per channel and over 270,000 µF of filter capacitance form its power supply, and AVM states that it drives even the most demanding loudspeakers.

The analog channels are completely separated for channel separation. AVM rates the power amplifier's distortion below 0.005% and its signal-to-noise ratio above 95 dB, with an input sensitivity of 1.3 V.

A Fully DC-Coupled Analog Path

The entire analog signal path of the AS XL is DC-coupled, with no coupling capacitors, plus automatic offset compensation and a dual differential input stage. AVM gives the preamplifier section a -3 dB frequency response from below 1 Hz to above 300 kHz, which it credits to the automatic offset compensation, along with distortion below 0.02% and a signal-to-noise ratio above 99 dB.

Integrated power filtering, which AVM calls a Mini Power Conditioner, shields sensitive components from interference. Tone control and parametric loudness come with a bypass function.

S-DAC and the X-Stream Engine

The S-DAC module is built around the ESS 9038 PRO Double-Quad DAC, with four DAC channels per stereo channel working in parallel. It processes PCM up to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD256.

The X-Stream Engine streams Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect (MAX), Spotify Connect, internet radio, AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth 5.0, and it is Roon Ready. AVM's engine is fully software-based and takes online updates, and AVM RoomConneXion adds whole-home multiroom audio. You control it from the RC-X app or the included RC 5 remote.

HDMI ARC, Inputs and Outputs

HDMI ARC connects your TV directly. Four digital inputs (two coaxial, two optical), USB-C audio and USB-A for external hard drives handle other digital sources. The analog inputs are one RCA and one XLR high-level input, configurable as signal-sensitive inputs or for home theater throughput.

The AS XL also has one RCA and one XLR output and two digital outputs (coaxial and optical) with optional variable volume. A trigger input, an external IR sensor input and two sequentially switched trigger outputs connect it to the rest of a system.

Silver, Brushed Black or Cellini Chrome

The aluminum enclosure measures 430 x 250 x 420 mm and weighs 50 kg. It comes in silver, brushed black, or the Cellini edition with a chrome fascia. The AS XL is handcrafted in Malsch and delivered in a flight case.
