Yes, that's literally his cell

At this level, every detail matters: your room, your system, what you’re driving it with, what you’re listening to. I handle these orders personally because an investment like this deserves more than an Add to Cart button. We’ll work through system synergy, I’ll make sure the setup is right, and we’ll coordinate delivery so it arrives exactly how it should. A few of our brands require this direct approach, but at this price point, it’s how I’d do it anyway. Use the button above, or call/text me directly at 410-239-2020.

The Rogue Audio RP-9 v2 is the flagship preamplifier in Rogue's lineup, built around four 6H30P tubes instead of the 12AU7 used throughout the rest of the RP series. The 6H30P is a high-transconductance dual triode originally developed for Soviet military and telecommunications applications, offering lower noise, wider bandwidth, and higher linearity than the 12AU7. The result is a frequency response stretching from 5Hz to 170kHz, fully balanced XLR connectivity, and a 2-watt tube headphone amplifier, all in a 30-pound full-chassis platform handcrafted in Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania.

Key Features of the Rogue Audio RP-9 v2

  • Four 6H30P Tubes: High-transconductance dual triodes in mu-follower topology for superior linearity, lower noise, and wider bandwidth than 12AU7-based designs
  • 5Hz to 170kHz Bandwidth: Extended frequency response for superior transient speed, air, and harmonic detail
  • Fully Balanced XLR: Two pairs of balanced XLR inputs and two pairs of balanced XLR outputs
  • 30V Maximum Output: Drives any power amplifier to full rated output, including high-sensitivity designs
  • Ultra-Low Output Impedance: <10 ohm output impedance for long cable runs and any amplifier load
  • 2W Tube Headphone Amplifier: High-power tube-based headphone circuit for demanding planar magnetics and dynamic headphones
  • Machined Aluminum Remote: 10-button precision remote included as standard
  • Home Theater Bypass: Unity gain mode for surround processor integration
  • Processor Loop and Mono Button: External processor insertion and mono collapse for maximum flexibility
  • Handcrafted in the USA: Built in Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania with a 3-year warranty

The 6H30P Tube: Why It Matters

Every other preamplifier in the Rogue RP series uses 12AU7/ECC82 tubes. The RP-9 uses 6H30P tubes, and that choice defines its character. The 6H30P (also designated 6H30Pi or 6N30P) is a high-transconductance, low-impedance dual triode originally developed for Soviet military radar and telecommunications equipment in the 1970s. Its electrical characteristics differ fundamentally from the 12AU7: higher transconductance produces more gain per stage, lower plate resistance reduces output impedance, and the tube's inherently wide bandwidth extends the RP-9's frequency response to 170kHz (compared to 100kHz for the 12AU7-based RP-7). The lower internal impedance also reduces the tube's sensitivity to microphonics, external vibration, and electromagnetic interference. The 6H30P typically lasts longer than 12AU7 tubes in normal preamp service. Replacement tubes are readily available from multiple manufacturers.

Circuit Architecture

Four 6H30P tubes are arranged in two mu-follower pairs in a balanced differential configuration optimized for linearity and dynamics. The circuit delivers 14dB of gain through the RCA outputs and 20dB through the balanced XLR outputs, matching the RP-7's gain structure but with the 6H30P's wider bandwidth and lower noise floor contributing to a different sonic presentation. Maximum output is 30V, and the output impedance is below 10 ohms, ensuring the RP-9 drives any power amplifier cleanly regardless of input impedance or cable length. Total harmonic distortion is below 0.1% across the operating band. The slow-start sequencing and auto-mute at power on and off protect the tubes and downstream components.

Fully Balanced Connectivity

The RP-9 provides two pairs of balanced XLR inputs and two pairs of balanced XLR outputs, enabling a fully balanced signal path from source through power amplification. The dual balanced outputs allow simultaneous connection to two power amplifiers or a stereo amplifier and subwoofer amplifier without signal splitting. Three pairs of single-ended RCA inputs, two pairs of variable RCA outputs, and one pair of fixed RCA outputs handle single-ended sources and connections. The home theater bypass accepts surround processor signals at unity gain, and the processor loop inserts external signal processors into the path. The mono button collapses the stereo signal for mono recordings.

2-Watt Tube Headphone Amplifier

The RP-9 includes the most powerful headphone amplifier in the RP series: a 2-watt tube-based circuit that drives demanding planar magnetics and high-impedance dynamic headphones with authority. That 2 watts is double what the RP-1 v2 delivers and represents a serious headphone amplifier in its own right. The tube preamp section feeds the headphone output, so headphone listening benefits from the full 6H30P signal path. For a dedicated headphone station with balanced outputs, the RH-5 Headphone Amplifier offers 3.5 watts with both single-ended and balanced connections.

Machined Aluminum Remote and Controls

The RP-9's remote control is a machined aluminum unit with 10 buttons, the highest-grade remote in the RP series. The RP-1 v2 ships with a 7-button plastic remote, the RP-3 and RP-5 with 10-function plastic remotes, and the RP-7 with a metal remote. The RP-9's machined aluminum version reflects its flagship positioning. The defeatable OLED display shows volume, source, and balance, with 0.5dB volume steps for fine-grained adjustment at low listening levels.

Explore the Full Rogue Audio Preamplifier Series

The RP-9 v2 is the flagship of Rogue Audio's preamplifier lineup:

  • RP-1 v2: Compact two-tube preamp with built-in MM/MC phono stage and discrete headphone amplifier. The entry point at $1,995.
  • RP-3: Two-tube with balanced XLR and MOSFET buffering. The affordable balanced option at $3,495.
  • RP-5 v2: Four-tube with Triton II-derived phono stage, MOSFET-buffered headphone amplifier. The vinyl specialist at $4,295.
  • RP-7 v2: Four-tube with balanced XLR, MOSFET output buffering, 30V output. Stereophile Class A Recommended at $5,495.

The RP-9 shares its gain structure, output capability, and output impedance with the RP-7. The fundamental difference is the tube complement: 6H30P versus 12AU7. The 6H30P's wider bandwidth (170kHz vs 100kHz), lower noise, and different harmonic character make the RP-9 a distinct instrument rather than simply a more expensive RP-7. For turntable-centric systems, pair the RP-9 with the Ares II Phono Preamplifier for a fully Rogue phono front end.

Recommended Power Amplifiers

The RP-9 v2 pairs naturally with Rogue's pure tube power amplifiers. The M-180 Monoblocks deliver 180 watts of Apollo-derived tube power with switchable triode/ultralinear operation, fully balanced connectivity, and Stereophile Class A recognition.
