The REL Classic 99 is a stunning homage to the golden age of Hi-Fi, a "modern classic" that blends a timeless, mid-century modern aesthetic with REL's most advanced 21st-century engineering. It is designed for the music lover who craves both the warmth, texture, and "soul" of vintage paper-cone subwoofers and the power, speed, and deep-bass impact of modern design. The Classic 99 is a closed box with a single down-firing 12-inch "paper-on-paper" driver and no passive radiator, driven by a 450-watt Class D amplifier. Housed in a walnut veneer cabinet with walls as thick as 32mm, it is the fusion of past and present, delivering a rich, powerful, and deeply musical foundation for any high-quality audio system.
Key Features
- 12” Paper-on-Paper Driver: A down-firing 12-inch long-stroke driver with a hot-pressed paper cone and a hand-thrown paper center cap, voiced for a warm, natural bass character.
- Closed-Box Design: A closed cabinet with about 40% more internal volume than the Classic 98 and an extra inch (25mm) of driver travel, rated to 24Hz at -6dB.
- 450W Class D Amplifier: One of REL’s proven 500-watt Class D amplifiers, limited to 450 watts and fed by an all-analog PerfectFilter front end.
- Walnut Veneer Enclosure: Solid cabinet walls as thick as 32mm, clad in dark walnut veneer, in the Mid-Century Modern form of a late 1990s REL.
- Legendary High Level Input: Features REL's High Level Neutrik Speakon input for a seamless, perfectly-timed blend with your main speakers.
- Optional Wireless Connectivity: Compatible with the AirShip II and the HT-Air MKII wireless systems (sold separately); the HT-Air MKII carries low-level or .1/LFE signals only, not the High Level connection.
The Soul of a Classic Driver
The heart of the Classic 99 is its bespoke 12-inch long-stroke driver, firing downward into the room. In a deliberate return to a more "classic" sound, REL's engineers developed a "paper-on-paper" cone. The main cone is hot-pressed paper, and a stiff center cap of hand-thrown paper is laid on top to randomize the fibers, which REL says gives the driver excellent self-damping. This composite design creates a driver that is inherently self-damping, fast, and remarkably textured. Unlike modern, stiffer materials, this paper cone imparts a warmth, naturalness, and "soul" to the bass that is incredibly musical and reminiscent of the most iconic vintage speakers.
Modern Power, Modern Depth
The Classic 99 masterfully pairs its vintage-voiced driver with a thoroughly modern engine. REL took one of its proven 500-watt Class D amplifiers, already used in thousands of earlier units, and limited it to 450 watts, then tuned the all-analog PerfectFilter front end to a closed-box cabinet with about 40% more internal volume than the Classic 98. The result reaches 24Hz at -6dB, and REL says the 99 plays about 30% louder and extends 4 to 5Hz lower than the 98, with the speed and authority that classic designs could only dream of.
Mid-Century Modern Artistry
This subwoofer is designed to be seen. The cabinet is a piece of Mid-Century Modern furniture, with solid walls as thick as 32mm clad in dark walnut veneer, hand fitted. The proportions follow the vintage form of a late 1990s REL, with a plain natural aluminum badge, blacked-out feet milled from solid billet, and no grille: the down-firing driver is unseen. It’s a design that rejects the anonymous black box, offering instead a piece of audio art that complements any tastefully designed living space.
Seamless Integration
The Classic 99 is a true REL, meaning it is designed for perfect, seamless integration with your main speakers. It features REL’s legendary High Level Input, which connects directly to your amplifier's speaker terminals. This ensures the Classic 99 receives the exact same sonic signature as your main speakers, allowing it to blend perfectly and add a true, full-range foundation to your music. This method adds depth, richness, and an expansive soundstage, not just heavy, disconnected bass.

Is the Classic 99 good for home theater?
REL builds it for music-first systems, but says it is also a crushingly powerful theater sub, especially as the rear-channel subs in a large REL HT/3D system. It has high-level, low-level and LFE inputs.

REL lists its HT-Air MKII or AirShip II kits, sold separately; the HT-Air MKII does not carry the high-level signal. A mains select switch sets it for 120V or 230V, and a 32-foot Speakon cable comes in the box.
