Rega Planar 1 or Planar 2?
Rega Planar 1 or Planar 2?
The Planar 1 is Rega's plug-and-play deck: its RB110 tonearm sets bias automatically, the Carbon cartridge comes fitted, and it spins a 23mm phenolic platter from a 24V motor. The Planar 2 moves up to the RB220 tonearm with adjustable bias, which suits a wider range of cartridges, a 10mm glass platter and a gloss plinth, and we sell it with Rega's Nd3 cartridge fitted. Both change speed by moving the belt by hand.
Does the Planar 1 have a built-in phono stage?
Does the Planar 1 have a built-in phono stage?
No. Rega's manual has you connect the Planar 1 to an appropriate phono stage, either the phono input on your amplifier or a separate unit. Rega makes a Planar 1 Plus with a phono stage built in, but the Planar 1 we sell does not have one. Its Carbon cartridge is a moving magnet, so Rega's Fono Mini A2D MK2 or an amplifier such as the io, with an MM phono input built in, will do the job.
How much setup does the Planar 1 need?
How much setup does the Planar 1 need?
Very little; Rega says it can be set up in under 30 seconds. The Carbon cartridge is fitted at the factory and the bias is set automatically, so there is no anti-skate to adjust. You fit the platter and mat, push the balance weight onto the back of the arm until it stops, connect the power supply and phono cable, and remove the stylus guard. The on/off switch is on the underside of the plinth.
How do I change the Planar 1 to 45 rpm?
How do I change the Planar 1 to 45 rpm?
Lift off the platter and move the drive belt from the 33 1/3 step of the motor pulley to the 45 step; both sit beneath the platter. Rega asks that the turntable sit on a level, stable surface, and its wall bracket is designed to fit the Planar 1.
Can I upgrade the Planar 1's cartridge later?
Can I upgrade the Planar 1's cartridge later?
The simplest upgrade is the stylus. Rega lists the Carbon Pro upgrade stylus for the Carbon cartridge, which changes the conical tip to a bonded elliptical profile, without removing the cartridge from the arm.
